  • I have toyed with the idea of a video like this for a while. No intention or desire to be a star, just thought it might be worthwhile to show a few details of how 5” gauge steam locos need looking after, including maintenance.
    After running the engine in the morning, dropping the fire I decided to investigate why valve events were not as good as they had been. I found lots of movement resulting in lost motion. I made new die blocks and pins, did not adjust the timing and the results I believe were well worth the effort in making 2 new die blocks and 2 new pins.

    What an excellent idea to put the eccentric strap bolts both facing the bottom! Quite a lot of wear on the blocks and pins, but I guess you got your money's worth out of them with how much it's run so far :)

    It might not be a mainline loco but it runs at mainline speeds!

      Fair point, I suppose it runs at home more than on club tracks these days.
