    Another tip is making pillow covers from shower curtains. I always find the better patterns from magnolia, studio McGee etc than the fabric at the fabric store. Then grab some coordinating cheap fabric (for one side) and then a nice shower curtain and you can make several pillows vs buying one 50-200.00 pillow

      Yes! I make all my own pillow covers. I make them with a lapped over back, sort of like envelope style, so you don't need to put in a zipper. Also, if you like them tight on your pillow, make them the exact size of the pillow or 1/2 inch smaller. Then they stand up nicely. I'm always on the lookout for fabric remnants in my colors. I'm about to make some from a kantha quilt in beautiful blues with embroidery.

      Or use queen sized duvet covers. It’s all about the quality of the fabric. Lots of shower curtains are cheap polyester. I once recovered a chaise with fabric from a pottery barn striped duvet cover. Price per yard was so much cheaper than the fabric store, and the panels are so wide!!

    Pottery Barn used to carry a black wooden bookcase with paned glass doors. I contemplated buying it for years. It was $800 and I even went to see it in person. In those days, 1980-2010, I did a lot of shopping from catalogs, but this bookcase just wasn’t quite as big as I wanted.
    An outlet furniture store opened up in what used to be a grocery store space near my job that sold discounted furniture from high-end department store chains. Needless to say, there was a hodgepodge of merchandise. One day I saw a bookcase in the same style as the Pottery Barn bookcase in a dark wood (even better than black) that was MUCH bigger, sturdier, and even more beautiful than the one at Pottery Barn. At $1,100 it was a steal. I bought it immediately!
    Don’t buy something unless it’s what you really, really want, need, and love. When you do, you will keep it forever.

    I disagree on furniture. I think it’s worth the splurge. For example we kept going through bed frames because they would break whenever we moved or just ended up hating them. We lived in Italy for 4 years, and while there we had a bed custom made. This bed is an artisanal masterpiece. It’s made out of solid wood and can with stand a lot. While this bed frame was expensive to have made I will never have another bed frame. In the long run it’s saving me money because I will never switch it out again

It is so easy to thrift great frames, and given that they're pieces that don't really get any wear and tear (hang them and you're don), why not shop for something older and quality but affordable? xoMacenna is like the queen of this.

    Another great video Kiva! When we were building and designing our first home, one of my students who does interiors told me to spend my money on bathroom and kitchen faucets, a good sink, floors and doors. Use a cheaper cabinet mdf but put a better quality handle on the cabinets we use the most-not top quality-just a good quality. She was so right. We have always had a beautiful home, but it didn't "break" the bank. Love your common sense attitude and videos. 🙂

    Great video! I do splurge on pillows though - RH and Amber Interiors have gorgeous pillows. Especially Amber Interiors - I bought some one- of-a-kind antique fabric pillows that are absolutely gorgeous. Those containers for your refrigerator and pantry are not practical. Half the time that family size box of cereal doesn’t always fit in the container. Now you have a container AND a third full box of cereal to store.

    9:30 My old mattress and box spring didn't survive my latest move, and when I replaced them, I saved a couple hundred dollars by getting a steel platform instead of a box spring - weight capacity over 1,000 pounds, but the frame itself isn't too heavy. I absolutely love it, and there's more room under it for the cat to play and to store my games in plastic tubs, but I don't need a step to get up into bed.

    I weep for the cheap vase suggestion! I work for an art pottery in the UK and our stuff has a story and extensive history , collectors can talk to the individual artists if they want, everything made in one place. I’ve obviously got some ware in my house, along with some cheapo mass production vases which admittedly are aesthetically pleasing but I’ve no idea where they were even made.
    It was strange to hear such an all-encompassing “don’t waste money on vases” when they are still valuable art in their own right and many small potteries have a hard enough time justifying the price tag after designing, making and firing these artworks in an increasingly difficult retail environment. Maybe it would have sounded better to say “don’t waste money on expensive-for-the-heck-of- it mass-produced vases” instead? Think about how throwaway these cheap items are- all the resources that making clay items entail to be chucked in landfill when they fall out of fashion. We hear it all the time about fast fashion and it’s drain on the environment. A more expensive item is designed to be kept and cherished.
    I don’t think I’m the only person who prefers a deeper connection to the decorative items in my house and even if some of my decor changes I can work around and include my original artwork and ceramics, I don’t think it’s good advice to limit peoples interior decoration imagination just because they can go out and buy it all again cheaply.
    I’m fully aware that expensive art is not for everyone’s budget but I’d never consider it a waste if it’s something you’ve saved up for, been lucky enough to receive as a gift or just within your financial means. Sorry for the rant I just don’t like to see potential art lumped in with regular household items!

    Thank you for this video. I am in the process of redoing my living room, dining room, and kitchen. I spent a fortune on two stunning sofas that we use every night. One for him and one for me 😊. We hardly ever use the dining room table so I am going “cheap” on the furniture. And, I have been searching for pillows for the sofas and debating on whether to spend more, but I cringe because we lay on those too! They will get dirty and a new set of pillows will change my space in a couple of years when I get tired of them!

    I did spend more than I normally would for my sofa. It’s foam with down around it. It’s the most comfortable sofa I’ve ever had. The pillows that came with it have down in them too. I may get some covers for them. My grandson keeps pulling the feathers out. You can just kind of move the fabric around and then they don’t stick you. So maybe with extra fabric he will leave them alone. One looks good still. The other is kind of flat.

      It's great that works for you.. as an artist what I hear from that is that you haven't studied art so don't see the difference- I would say there's a big difference between children's art and someone that has spent their 10,000 hours developing their craft 😊 but if you enjoy the free stuff just as much, power to you!

      The OP didn't say she doesn't see the difference between children's art and expensive art from a trained, professional artist. • @laurie8857
      @laurie8857 Před rokem

      @@ashleys4652 hmm.. I interpreted OPs post as them sharing how where the art comes from means more to them than the art itself - having art from children she loves/having art that's supporting homeless community has more value to her than how it looks... but the context of this video isn't about values (ie valuing community over valuing art as a profession) this video is what is actually a waste of money/bad value for money. So me seeing them offer children's art as a suggestion in response to this video, makes me think OP is putting the two in the same playing field? That's why my instinct is to defend professional artists a bit.

    • @ashleys4652
      @ashleys4652 Před 11 měsíci +1

      @@laurie8857 It's really not that deep or serious. No need to "defend" from a sweet woman who just made a simple comment that she loves children's ar and art that benefits the homeless. I have a napkin that I keep on my desk all the time that I made by hand from a 50 cent fabric square. I don't really have it to clean up spills, mostly just to function like a coaster/place to put plates filled with warm food. Other then that, its function is to be there and have a nice pattern. Although some people prefer desilvered mirror as an accent, especially in the living room or foyer, but if you want a functioning mirror, I suggest to invest in one or two good quality mirror in your dressing room and bathroom. Mine lasts for 20+ years.

    I never really thought about how infrequently we use the dining chairs vs the barstools! You are so right! They literally just sit there for 363 days when we don't have a crowd over to eat.

    Damn, she said don't even get the mirrors where if you look at them funny, they break 😂😂😂 Oh my god, I swear those are the mirrors my family always had growing up and I halfway thought about still getting one as an adult! I've not, only because I want to be certain of the color pallette I want to do with my bedroom first (the only room I care to have such a mirror at this time), but yes, those wobbly, cheap mirrors never make it through a move and my family moved a lot.

    Speaking of chairs your cat doesn't scratch, I have a bright blue mesh gamer chair at my desk. It's very comfortable, and that mesh is STRONG, I have 4 cats and cannot keep all of them scratching at things all the time, but they don't damage the mesh at all. I can encourage them onto a proper scratch place without panicking inside about them ruining my brand new chair, unlike with my partner's chair which is faux leather and very scratched despite being a year old. The cats don't even touch his chair much, one cat does for attention infrequently but you can see every tiny nick

    I agree with all of these other than the duvet/doona. Having natural materials (wool or down) makes such a difference over a polyester fill! It doesn't have to be hundreds, but I think in the $100-$200 mark is decent. But all my frames and vases are a few dollars from thrift stores and markets.

    I bought both my big mirrors at goodwill.
    Not sure about the bookcases being cheap. I bought a cheap bookcase and actually put books on it. The shelves have taken on a slight curve. Note. they were not paperbacks. Always put the heavy books, on the bottom shelf.
    Are wishbone chairs any good? They look good but they look like space wasters because of the curve.

    Dining chairs. Have to be comfy. Spent lots of money on ours 15 years ago they have been used twice a day and are just wearing out. Leather with chrome frame, timeless and easy to clean. If a dining table is clear of junk and has comfy chairs you are more likely to use it and have lovely dinners and lunches with your family. Try it , eating at a dining table every day with fabric serviettes and laid out cutlery is a super little pleasure which is free, calming and allows you to enjoy your food slowly. Stop gobbling your food at the breakfast bar. Guarantee you will feel happier and eat less and appreciate your family and food more.

    Not only does Walmart and Dollar Tree have storage containers, sometimes they're surprisingly beautiful too. If you wait, they change em out and sometimes they have really nice desaturated colors and whatnot (which I always think look more lux than the neons). Target also usually always has nice simple home decor / organizational things too

    Sometimes I will spend a lot of money on baskets and other storage if it’s going to be in plain sight. There are some really wonderful African baskets that are fabulous, but can get pricey.
    If they’re stuck in a pantry closet, or cabinet, that’s different. But *I* still have to look at them even if no one else does so I don’t buy just any old thing.

    The only one I disagree with is the bed frame. I've had a frame from Ikea which replaced my previous very cheap frame (the legs ended up bending) and the frame has become super squeaky despite me adjusting the screws and making sure it's aligned. I definitely regret buying it as changing it out now and getting a new frame would be a hassle. I think looking at how the bed frame is made and making sure it's going to last for years is the best way to go even if it costs a little more.
