Not sure of the context. Was she actually blaming having kids for ruining her career because she had to take time off to take care of them. Or was she blaming society and the industry for looking down on mothers and not giving them the same respect once they have kids?
Also her 2018 album no shame is actually really really good caught me off guard, I still listen to it

As someone that was ending middle school when fucking Smile came out 😢 i teared up when you said this came out when you were in middle school, anyway im impressed on your take as someone who i would consider only just started to have more formative memories of song and you didnt have the bias, i never heard Sheezus (i was obsessed with Kpop then) and kinda thankful I strayed from anglophone genres then

great video! i was obsessed with lily allen when i was a kid, i used to sit for hours typing up all the lyrics to all the songs on alright still (i absolutely did not know what they meant but i knew my parents disapproved), those were the days!! sheezus was such a massive flop and felt dated even as it was first released, but ngl i still listen to l8 cmmr sometimes 👀

Honestly I really think that’s her main issue is the distance between all of the albums (not only in years, but with the music genre): she started her career as a (somewhat) different genre from the other pop girls (she wasn’t SOLID pop, with mix with some more soft stuff), and her image to me was pretty iconic. I don’t see her need to blame the kids for her failures😭😭 she waiting FOUR YEARS (which is an enormous time in the music industry) to put out an album that I can only describe as fragile (no good deep cuts, and the singles were hit or miss), then WAITING another FOUR YEAR to put out No Shame (which was just a flop, not even iconic😭)… her probability to remain as a pop star were below 0, so her latest statement makes me really mad

I was a Lily stan before this because of my dad and I was in 8th grade when it dropped. I still loved a lot of the songs but I noticed this album wasn’t as perfect as her other 2 at the time. I would only listen to certain songs off of this album instead of the whole album like I did with alright,still and it’s not me it’s you. I definitely wish Lily put out more music because she’s been one of my favorites ❤

i don’t think lily was starting beef or making shady comments about the celebrities she name dropped in sheezus. the whole first verse is about her feeling like she’s being forced to come back and being thrown “in the ring” of vying for the general public’s attention as a woman in music. when i first heard the song, i thought she was saying all that stuff like she was the general public commenting on all those other women. like the gaga line. this is the best way i can explain so hopefully it makes sense. she herself isn’t making fun of gaga, she’s repeating what people have said about her. think of it like this: lily is mocking those people with “wErE aLl WaTcHiNg GaGa, LoL hAhA” but then lily defends gaga by saying “dying for her art so really she’s a martyr.” the same goes for the other lines too. “riri isn’t scared of katy perry’s roaring” and “queen bee’s gone back to the drawing” both sound like headlines from TMZ or people magazine. i also think lilly is self aware enough to know that in 2014, Rihanna, Gaga, Katy Perry, Lorde and all other mainstream pop girls were UNTOUCHABLE, so lily allen wasn’t really gonna do much in terms of causing drama. overall, i think it’s a commentary on women in music. sorry for the rant, i’m stoned teehee.

I do remember pitchfork doing a story about someone online saying Lily's singles were "rubbish." Lily responded to that person saying, they were because she supposedly had better songs that the label didn't want on the album 🤷. I still thought URL badman, hard out here, and L8cmmer were classic Lily songs. Even though URL badman had the worst song title, the dated references don't hurt the song so much imo. The message itself aged disturbingly well holy fuck. Also...the album after Sheezus wasn't.....that great either? It was like less witty, a bit more serious.
I love Lily, she was the soundtrack to my teens, but Sheezus is by far her worst album. I remember being so excited for it to come out, I was 19, young, gay, and dying for new music from my queen and...it was bad. I was so disappointed!
At least No Shame was good and it didnt leave a bad taste in our mouths.

Problem in Sheezus is that she was tired. She was lazy. Too tired to think about good subjects to write about and lazy enough to do what everybody was doing sonically. Even in the Sheezus chorus cause she can write better than simply list names to throw shade. Its the same woman who writes No Shame years after.
