The Western Maryland Scenic Railroad operates excursions on the former WM and Cumberland & Pennsylvania between Cumberland and Frostburg, MD, usually powered by 1916-built, former Lake Superior and Ishpeming, 2-8-0 'consolidation #734. Today was no exception. We see 734 on the trip towards Frostburg at the following locations: crossing the Potomac River from Ridgeley, WV into Cumberland, MD; rounding Helmstetter's Curve; Woodcock Hollow Road; pulling into Frostburg, MD and turning on the Frostburg turntable. When she's working her guts out getting her train up the grades of the Alleghenies, she definitely earns her nickname, "Mountain Thunder." After a layover in Frostburg, we see 734 bringing her train back down the mountains toward Cumberland with ease. The locations: Near Trimble Road (walked down to an old WM signal bridge), rounding Helmstetter's Curve again, and pulling into Cumberland Station. With permission, we also got to go down and see 734 being turned on the Ridgeley, WV wye at the end of the day. Enjoy!

Great video Bobert, back in May of 2011 I rode behind 734 and wow what a loco! It was a great ride although the weather wasn't I remember it well being that it was raining the rails were slick the train lost traction going to Frostburg, so what happened the crew backed the train up about a mile to try again no luck, but luckily they tried again this time backing up "down the line" about 2 miles with that last move they gave 734 everything she got we finally made it to Frostburg only about 30 min delay it was a memorable trip 734 put on a great show then!
great catches and video of this railroads steamer
I was the architect who restored the Western Maryland Train Station and designed the fountain with the sculpture of the canal mule and boy. Seeing and hearing the coal fired engine was the best part of my day when I was working on that project.
Eleanor Lakin I rode in #734's cab the day Bobert Sporek was videotaping this.
Eleanor Lakin The day after our cab ride, we went to the B&O Museum
These were the glory days of the WMSR. I'm glad they are doing better (financially) now than they had been but this was around the end of the golden age in my opinion
10 years ago today, this video was recorded the day me and Grant took a cab ride on 734.
Love the shot of the turn table, great vantage point to film from!
I am waving from the cab of 734 at 2:44 and 2:49. My friend and I paid $450 to ride in the steam locomotive cab. It is $225 per person. We are also volunteers at the Hocking Valley Scenic Railway in Nelsonville, Ohio. We used to own its other sister #33.
HAPPY! HAPPY! NEW YEAR 2020 MOUNTAIN THUNDER #734!,0:54
Great Video Bob!
woo! Nice job, Bobby!
The whistle is not from #1114, it is actually an Illinois Central 3-chime steamboat whistle. I think that's a pretty good sounding whistle.
That's me climbing out of the cab at 5:25
This only of its class LS&I heavy consolidation fits perfectly in its Western Maryland make up.
Nice vid!
i wish you could still be in Scenic Passenger Train Service on Board The New Hope & IvyLand Railroad in New Hope,P.A.
Is that the whistle from WM #1114?
Actually that is an Illinois Central steamboat whistle
YE OLD MOSQUITO KILLER BUT STILL A BEAUTY
There is something very wrong with this steam engine! It should not be belching out that much black of smoke! I believe it is about the worst I have ever seen! Is it about due for it's fifteen year inspection?
I think she looks beautiful, with all of that smoke!!
That whistle sounds awful
uratoolbag I rode in #734's cab the day Bobert Sporek was videotaping this. That engine is using an Illinois Central Steamboat 3 chime.

+dale leibfried fuck you dale, fuck you!
That is 734's whistle from 1114 I think it was. I don't know if you heard but #734 might be being replaced by #1309 if that happens I don't know what will become of this classic locomotive. Please wmsr whatever you do don't scrap #734
