    If a Sleeping Beauty story wanted to show the consequences of destroying all the spinning wheels in the kingdom, it would have been a lot more interesting to have the kingdom fall in financial ruin because their livelihood came from textiles and actually creating spinning wheels. They could even have the someone in the kingdom create the spinning wheel that puts the princess to sleep as revenge against the monarchs who put them in financial ruin while the royal family still lives a life of wealth and luxury thus it becomes a self fulfilling prophecy because their fear of it happening to their daughter made it happen. But instead of something interesting like that, this movie has the people whine about not having any new outfits for the last sixteen years.

  • @0deadx21
    @0deadx21 Před 6 lety +170

    In the Disney version, the curse was a time period instead of a specific day, so the burning of the spinning wheels and the immediate hiding of the princess made perfect sense. Here everyone wasted their time. They could have shown the princess what a spinning wheel and she wouldn't be impressed with one by the time of the curse.

      Aurora was a better Sleeping Beauty because we got to see her personality in about five minutes during her walk in the woods. She’s so kind to the animals that they want to play with her and enjoy her company, she expresses how she wants a bit more than her life in the woods, and she at least has the sense to have running away if she doesn’t know someone and is weary of them (Prince Phillip). Aurora wasn’t stupid. Rosebud seems like she would be impressed by the quarter behind the ear trick and ask to see it again. Even dangling keys in front her probably would entertain her.

    I think my favorite retelling of the Sleeping Beauty story is Gail Carson Levine's "Princess Sonora and the Long Sleep". The fairies' gifts are a bit more practical (sure, there's "beauty" and "gracefulness", but there's also a loving heart, good health, and TWO gifts of supreme intelligence due to one of the fairies running out of ideas), the ways of dealing with spindles are less extreme (no spindles in the castle, and I think at some point they had spindle heads blunted), the princess is way more proactive (she hides a pointy spindle in her closet so that she can prick herself at an opportune moment; it gets ruined when her mother finds it and pricks her accidentally, but it was interesting), and the reason for the prince and princess to like each other instantly is much better (Sonora's uber-intellect makes her an insufferable know-it-all in the eyes of most people, but Prince Christopher is so insatiably curious that he'll never tire of having her answer his endless questions; in fact, he sought out the castle because her know-it-all-ness had spawned a saying and he immediately wanted to meet her upon finding out she was a real person).

      Maleficent, like the three other fairies, is a member of the Fair Folk: they don't have morals the way mortals do. As far as Maleficent is concerned, the king and the queen commited an unforgivible crime by not inviting her. The funny thing is, if they DID invite her, there wouldn't be a problem. She'd either not show for to the royal baby shower, or she'd give Aurora a gift of her own. Sure, it would be something insane like spitting fire or being able to turn into a spider but there would be no curse.
      Also, now I kinda wanna see a version one of the other three wasn't invinted. They probably wouldn't curse a freaking infant -probably - but hey, it's the Fair Folk.

      My question is, why didn't they wait until the princess was older before burning all the spindles in the kingdom. It's an easy process and if done well enough in advance, they'd be able to comb the kingdom more thoroughly for them.
      And for that matter, why didn't the king and queen inform their daughter about the curse well before it was supposed to happen? Sure, she'd grows up cautious if not frightened around spindles, but she'd have the full knowledge of her curse and would be better prepared to combat it when the day arrives, assuming that simply avoiding the spindle is an option to negate the curse entirely.

    • @MrKlausbaudelaire
      @MrKlausbaudelaire Před 6 lety +18

      heck, they didn't even have to burn the spindles, just, as you said, tell her about the curse, make sure she is reminded of it her whole life, and between her 17th and 18th birthday, put her under constant guard and escorts until she is 19, the curse would be dodged.

  • @lasmirandadennsiewillja9435

    In the original fairy tale, there's no evil fairy/witch. There are thirteen fairies in the kingdom but there are only twelve golden plates. The king's solution is to just not invite one of the fairies. This is considered as great disrespect and as punishment, the not-invited fairy curses the princess and the whole kingdom.
    (There's a former East Germany film adaptation from the 60s or 70s in which each fairy stands for one virtue, and the king decides to not invite the fairy of diligence because he thinks a princess doesn't need diligence anyway. So, in that adaption, the fairy isn't evil at all, just rightfully angry because she as a person and the virtue she represents are considered useless and inferior to the others, like beauty and generosity. I really love that addition, if only the movie wasn't a bit awkward and boring in general.)

    • @kenthuang436
      @kenthuang436 Před 7 měsíci +2

      Yeah. That’s how I saw it too. The uninvited fairy wasn’t exactly evil but rather upset that literally everyone in the Kingdom but her got invited to a grand party. I’d be pretty angry too. The way I saw it, the fairy only cursed the princess to teach the king and queen that they should make sure everyone is included in a celebration if everyone else got an invite. It’s just good etiquette. And in Disney’s version, Maleficent didn’t even seem like she was going to hurt Aurora let alone curse her and was pretty calm and willing to listen to King Stefan as to why she wasn’t invited when Merryweather just had to say that she wasn’t wanted which clearly offended Maleficent and the exact moment she became angry and spiteful. Up until then, Maleficent seemed like she was willing to be reasoned with. So technically it’s Merryweather’s fault Aurora got cursed.

I saw and really enjoyed it as a child, and in many respects I still do because some of its music is actually quite catchy, though of course it doesn't hold a candle to the Disney spectacle. Still I'd love if you watched because several points of it stay true to the original French novel (like the Prince Beauty sees and interacts with in her dreams at night) while also adding its own random...randomness. I think you'd have fun with it and making all sorts of "Disney did it better" jokes!

    Oh, yes, yes, YES! Cannon Movie Tales are ASTONISHING in their wretchedness, and yet somehow kinda wonderful! So happy you're finally riffing on 'em (I love "Snow White" and "Beauty and the Beast", and "Puss in Boots" and "Red Riding Hood" have to be seen to be believed).
    1. 5:58: Did Kenny just goose the king?! Ewwww.
    2. I admire your restraint at not making a "Citizen Kane" joke at Rosebud's name. I wouldn't have been able to help myself.
    3. To be fair, the golden plates dilemma IS in some versions of the fairy tale. It's stupid there, too, so naturally the screenwriters that instead of a better one! Sheesh. Anyway, which illustrated version of "Sleeping Beauty" is the image at 7:42 from? It's gorgeous!
    4. Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers did an exquisite slow-motion dance number in the film "Carefree" that highlights their immense dancing gifts and the magical choreography. The slow-mo of the fairies here just highlights how little the choreographer and dancers gave a crap.
    5. The song "Life Looks Rosier Today"? Tahnee Welch's voice was dubbed. No, seriously, THAT was the best singer they could get.
    6. Hey, townspeople singing the clothing song? Quit dancing around, you idiots, you're only making the clothes rip more!
    7. 15:27-15:37: Terry Gilliam called, he wants his half-finished "Monty Python" animated sequence back!

    It’s nice to see someone finally come for the Cannon Movie Tales. I think those castle sets turned up in most of them. I am genuinely fond of their “Snow White”, which does have some filler but not nearly so much as this film does. It helps that being more faithful to Grimm than most versions means more plot to work through, and Diana Rigg makes a great villainess. On the other side of the coin their “Beauty and the Beast” has exactly the problem that vexed Disney for a while - Act Two IS just a couple meeting for dinner each night. Anyway, would like to see more of these less-covered films rather than the well-worn direct to video animations.

    So you should do a Know the Score video about Rogers and Hammerstein's Cinderella. There have been three movie adaptations all with a difference in tone and humor. 1957 with Julie Andrews, 1965 with Leslie Ann Warren and 1997 with Brandy. Fun fact about the first one, the Prince (Jon Cyper) was told this was a serious drama and so played his role straight while the King (Howerd Lindsey) was told it was a comedy and so played it for laughs.

    The thing that annoys me about the White Fairy's song is that her actress, Jane Wielding of new wave band The Go-Go's, absolutely can sing. But her voice is very much suited more to upbeat 80s new wave than it is to discount musical theatre. idk, listen to songs like ''We got the beat", "Our lips our sealed", or even that "Cool Places" song she did with Sparks for a good showcase of her vocal abilities.

    You don't need spinning wheels to make clothes...people were wearing clothes for thousands of years before those were invented. They _did_, like most manufacturing machines, make the industry more labor-efficient so there are fewer people needed to make a given outfit and they can put their efforts elsewhere. 16 years with no spinning wheels doesn't mean nobody gets new clothes in that time, it means all other industries suffer because more work has to go into keeping clothes made and repaired to keep up with the population.
    Same reason supers/kaiju smashing buildings don't stimulate the construction economy, they just divert efforts that would otherwise go to other projects into repairs/construction.

    My favourite iteration of 'Sleeping Beauty" would have to be Linda Medley's version in 'Castle Waiting'.
    In her version while the other witches (in her version they're witches and not fairies) were giving her superfluous gifts like charm and avoiding chores, the head witch's gift was supposed to be wisdom before Dame Mald (the 'evil fairy' of this story) gave her the curse.
    The story would later show us the consequences of this change.

    Cannon made a living off cheaper versions of whichever genre movies were popular at the time--and jumping on crazes like breakdancing, disco, ninjas, Vietnam fantasies. Those dollar figures are really modest relative to now, but I'd be somewhat surprised if they actually spent all 50 million on those 6 movies. I'd say it's a given that they reused costumes, sets, and shooting locarions.

    I swear, the part where the evil fairy unmasks herself always sends me howling with laughter! Maybe it's cheesy synth music, or her gloriously cheesy cackling, or the way the rips off the mask in the most over-dramatic way possible, or maybe it's a combination of all of them, but it gets me every time

    Could do more on the Cannon tales series such as Beauty and the Beast and The Frog Prince. And maybe the musical episode of Once Upon a Time?
