- Eating thunder tea rice in Singapore!
🍔 Singapore’s Best Plant Based Burgers: • Shocking Burgers in Si...
SINGAPORE - Today we’re going to eat one of the healthiest hawker center street food dishes you can eat in Singapore - thunder tea rice!
You’ll find this amazing Hakka dish all over Singapore, and it includes rice and seeds topped in an abundance of fresh vegetables and mushrooms, and served with a basil and sesame seed soup - that has the greenness of matcha tea - on the side. The vegetables and rice goes so well together with the basil heavy soup and they compliment each other so well. I also ordered a few side dishes including braised home made tofu, and fresh noodles with the same vegetable combination on top.
One of the best things about Thunder Tree is that they had their own local Singapore farm where they grew all their own organic vegetables to serve. But unfortunately, I’m not sure of the full story, but they had to give up their land for their farm and will no longer be able to grow their own vegetables. Since that’s a part of their philosophy, this happens to be the last day of their service.
Thunder Tree: goo.gl/maps/T31Gv3wb2xtTmy1V8 (unfortunately this branch has had to close, but there are other places to eat thunder tea rice in Singapore, and hopefully this place might open again in the future).
And so that completes a delicious and wholesome plant based meal at a Singapore food court - one of the healthiest dishes you can eat - and incredibly delicious!
Thank you for watching!

Usually we pour the green tea soup and mix it with the rice. That's where you get the full flavours blended together.
Thank you, my mistake, will do that next time.
@@BigOnSpiceMarkWiens I love their soup but I personally like to add it in to the rice bit by bit, hehe. Missing this stall...
Exactly! Many people don't eat like this but pouring whole soup into the rice is the real correct way to eat it!
Singaporeans in the comments section: POUR IT IN MARK
You really show respect for the people and the food in every country you travel to.
That is why I subscribe.
Thank you Mark Weins for featuring this store! This is a special special store that I have to let you know their story and background.
Their founder actually started the farm way back before the stall as he wanted to provide healthy pesticide free food to everyone. Through this stall, they take fresh ingredients grown on their farms and cook creative vegetarian dishes at an affordable price for the masses. The food is extremely delicious, healthy and fresh and even as a meat eater, I cannot state enough how good their food is.
This store is a gem and rarity in Singapore and it's such a pity that they were forced to closed by the Government just because the government wants to take back the land to have high productive farming instead of their organic farming which produces food at a lower scale.
There is zero farm to table concept in Singapore that is at an affordable price besides them and now there is truly zero. This is so so sad and such a sad look on the government. In the pursuit of productivity, we are killing all the unique flavors that shape our food culture.
We should truly learn to slow down and appreciate even the niche areas of our society to be truly multi-cultural.
Glad that you enjoyed their food and it is really delicious and flavorful! And one of the rare healthy hawker foods.
Thank you for leaving that comment. It is unfortunate they had to close.
This is a false story. I farmed for them in the late 80’s and the owner, his name is Leehansonf sold this shop due to high cost of operation and low profit margin. Stop spreading lies stupid
Thank you so much for sharing this back story. Truly an amazing place and you can taste the freshness. I hope they can continue in the future!
Same for the family-run quail (egg) farm in 2018 where they are forced to close because they don't find them productive enough, when they literally shoot their own foot earlier by reducing local quail egg supply because they want to import some from Malaysia as a way to 'diversify' food sources
Mark wiens = cringe worthy
Mark, you have to mix the green soup into the rice for the full experience haha
I'm loving this 'mini-series' on plant based or healthier options! I'm moving to Singapore soon and although I'm excited for ALL the dishes, I'm hoping to find a few more spots just like Thunder Tree to help me stay fighting fit.
🌿🍅🍆🌶️🥦💕
Thunder tea rice is actually rather common in Singapore. There are also many vegetarian Chinese (I recommend this place called R&J’s cozy corner) and Indian restaurants - the menu is quite wide, you’ll have to visit them yourself!
HDB Hub Toa Payoh basement food court. There is a stall that serves thunder tea and hakka dishes too.
You can find thunder tea rice and other vegetarian dishes in Fortune Centre @ Middle Rd. (:
Thunder tea rice is actually quite widely available in Singapore.
Thanks Mark and Ying. I appreciate your effort. I enjoyed this video. You work so hard and you have to be away from family to do it. It must be hard. I appreciate what you do and what you sacrifice to keep doing what you do. You have a strength and determination that is impressive.
Another wonderful video and exceptionally healthy food. I just love it. Well done, Mark!
Thunder rice is one of the most underrated dishes in Singapore!
I love thunder tea rice, especially the soup. But my mum hates it lol, she said she can’t stand the mint flavour of the soup idk why.
Hakka food, in general :'(
I've honestly never heard of that
@@Fern8 ikr! It's one of those dishes you either hate it or love it. There's no in between!
@@halonick i love the rice mixture very much but hated the green soup. Tried it 3 different times but my goosebumps comes up each time. Soup taste too strong for ke.

😍 love every bit of your experiences of entire foods in Singapore.
Hi Mark Wiens, it was so nice and a great blessing to have met you and your lovely wife Ying. Glad you like the Thunder Tree rice and you manage to try their special homemade chilies (sambal).
Hehehe you almost missed trying their sambal .
Love all your videos.
Hope to see you again in Singapore.
Thankfully I managed to give them a try back in May before they close down for good! It's been a dish I've been wanting to try and I'm happy that I finally tried this dish.
Looks yummy !! And healthy great video !!
Yummy food Mark you keep going traveling to all these places . Have a good day eating.
i heard about this thunder tea rice since it was featured and rated 3 stars in one of the Food King videos a few years back. it's a pity to hear that the outlet closed down for good. actually, it's hard to find a local vegetable farm in singapore due to limited land. the government has put so much effort into having local farms by encouraging the residents to do community gardening, particularly in the hdb flats. nowadays, quite a number of young generations begin to set up hydroponic farms on top of the roof to source the locally-grown vegetables. you can even pay a visit to a community garden at the new Kampung Admiralty neighbourhood.
Healthy Goodness. Have a great Day Mark . I'm going to look around for some Thunder Tea Rice
WOW ! Thanks for sharing amazing food 😍😍😍
Love the healthy food contents, keep it up please!
i'm fan of thunder tea rice's mushroom kolo noodles too. hope they'll make a come back one day!
Thank you for sharing this video, will try it once I visit there someday.
I'm so glad you got to try the sambal! It's officially a Big on Spice episode 😄Sorry to hear about the restaurant going out of business though. I hope they are able to find a new source for organic produce and reopen soon.
Everything looked amazing
Nice video. It looks really delicious and fun. Thank you for your sharing. Have a good time my friend
Actually the green soup is suppose to pour into the veggie + rice ...and mix it up which = AWESOME!! BOOOOM!! Haven't come here for quite a long time already....
I actually don't add the tea into the rice portion.. Find it too soggy at the end!
But how come he was not given the green soup and need to order separately?
By right should be come with it. Didn’t try this chinatown one before. i also pour half the soup to mix.
@@ernestkj I ate at Joo Chiat long time ago. Pour the soup into the rice. Not sure if that outlet is still around
@@___Danny___ Yeah
Love your commentary!
You suppose to mix the green tea soup into your rice to make a dense porridge.
Big on spice and forgets the sambal 🤦
Yes....Mark had it wrong 😂😂
Go back tomorrow! 🤣

There's a pretty nice thunder tea rice at the Toa Payoh HDB hub food court too!!
Ah need to mix the green soup with rice. But as long as u hop to countries with Hakka communities or even Taiwan u will get to eat this. Do correct me if I wrong for the other commenters!
From s’pore and hungry while watching this at 11.30pm sheesh. Hope u enjoyed sg mark!
u should pour the soup into the rice Mark, and we dont eat that with sambal.
Certified Gold!!!!!
Oh dear Mark, as you’ve realised by now, you need to mix the tea (the green soup) into the rice. It’s up to you how much to add but you don’t drink it separately like a soup. 😝 And next time, if you forget the sambal, just go to the head of the queue and tell the aunty you want sambal. No need to queue again. People will understand and won’t mind that you do that!
It was my favourite dish whenever I visit Chinatown.
Am still devastated when they closed on July 2022. Thanks for all the good memories. 😭
⚡️🍵🍚
Love You Brother God Bless You

Mark I would like if you can travel to Belize. Visit Coco Plum resort and San Pedro caye. Hopkins Village.
Yes, I miss thunder tree !
you should have mixed green soup with rice like daal rice
looks tasty
Mark, if u love the noodles, you should visit Sarawak.
Sad it has been closed, did have it twice and it was nice.
Due to the impending closure of its organic vegetable farm at Lim Chu Kang, Thunder Tree will be fully ceasing operations soon.
This Hakka dish originated from Hepo county of Meizhou city in eastern Guangzhou province...the original green coloured soup is not geen tea but rather a special tree leaf from Meizhou area pounded into powder form and made into a soup. Being migrants from the north and meat being scarce, Hakkas were resourceful to create this vegetable dish. Now it has carried forward worldwide where Hepo Hakkas are...
When are you coming to Australia Mark?
The one at Lau Pasat is quite good too
Thunder tea is a healthy food. Hope you can brought the dish to your restaurant in Thailand .
Glad Mark did enjoy the last meal there since that place is closing down on its last day.
Good food
My mother-in-law would prepare authentic Hakka Thunder Tea Rice with the tea thick with tea powder. Some stalls would give you a small bowl or diluted soup which isn't the real deal. You have to pour the tea into the mix to get that experience in flavours and immediately eat it, not soak until a soggy mess.
Thanks for the tip Stephen, next time I will try that!
