The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face was written by Ewan McColl in 1957 and popularised by Roberta Flack in 1972.
I thought I could put this on as background while I got on with a few jobs. Ha, more fool me. Glued to my chair all the way through. Perfection.

All of the guys in Matt's band are all old friends. Keyboard player and singer, Paul Bullen is the son of the owner of Highbarn, that temple of acoustic music that Matt and all of his friends adore. At the beginning of one of his Highbarn videos from last year, Matt says "Thanks Paul, for lending me the guitar". Another instrument that Paul plays. Little did they know that they would be on tour together in a year.

Interestingly, ALL modern versions of this song date back to Roberta Flack's reading of the song. Of course, the song had been around for over a decade before Roberta's recorded it and had been covered by lots of performers BUT Roberta's take on it has become the "go to " version.
There's a Harry Belafonte version that kinda lends from the original's guitar-y arrangement :) Nevertheless slowed down, but still less dry and mourning than what everyone else did czcams.com/video/aYyPG6ziX2Q/video.html
Actually Roberta's version is a cover. If you can say that everyone who does versions after a song, after it is first recorded, is covering that first artist, then Matt and everybody else is covering Peggy Seeger. The song was written for her.
