- Derick Sebastian speaks about how his late father figure and mentor, Sam Ellis III helped ACTIVATE Derick's purpose through the Ukulele. He performs one song dedicated to Mr. Ellis, and another medley of familiar tunes.
This TEDxSantaCruz talk is one of 22 surrounding our theme of "Activate" at the third full-day TEDxSantaCruz event held March 8, 2014 at the Hotel Paradox in Santa Cruz, CA. www.tedxsantacruz.org/

Derick's critically-acclaimed instrumental album, From His Heart, earned a Na Hoku Hanohano 2010 nomination, has shared the stage with fellow ukulele ace Jake Shimabukuro and opened for R&B sensation Brian McKnight, with notable performances at PIXAR Animation, Grey's Anatomy, and professional sports industry's MLB, PGA, ESPN and EA SPORTS. A very moving performance and tribute to one of those special people we would otherwise probably never hear of but who affect young people's lives so deeply.
I work in sports radio, and Derick was playing the national anthem at a game I was working a few years ago. He obviously killed his performance, but after having the chance to chat with him afterward, I was almost equally amazed at his kind, warm presence. Truly a cool dude.
I also happen to teach guitar and ukulele, but don't ask me to even attempt to play most of the stuff he's playing here! Keep shining your light, bro.
Knew this guy for a while and never knew this about him... He was always humble and always full of aloha. Mahalo no e Derick :) What a true inspiration.
A true master and at such a young age! You are truly an inspiration, Derick!
Again the difference of a boy having a mentor/father in his life glad someone took the time
Fantastic!!! What a joy to watch and listen to him play!
Wow...what a story. Such a beautiful and moving tribute. An incredible and powerful performance.
As a guitarist my whole life,a few years ago I got a ukulele as gift. Considering it just a fad at the time,I didn't touch it for almost a year.
Then, one day I tuned it and started learning chords. Within a year or so,I had already composed a few pieces and even got a huge applause from a small audience at a neighborhood cookout.
Now,I can't imagine being without my ukulele. And they can take my ukulele from me when they pry my cold dead fingers from it.
Just like music anime, I felt it...I felt the emotions, I see his life by hearing every note...every note hits and you can see how hard he worked, a song that can talk, show you even. The path they took and make you feel proud of the guy that endure the pain and gave his best
This was spectacular...I haven't felt that kind of power from a performance since I took my parents to see Itzak Perelman in solo concert in 1992...my dad telling me afterwords that the show was one of the highlights of his life. Tears all around. Thank you so much.
I can feel this performance. Thank you
So much emotion.. Beautiful

What type of ukele he used?
A galactic one
After wanting for ages to play the uke I discovered Arthurs Uke Blog and this appears to be the simplest online system (check it out on google)
oh the Possibilities that can be played on the Ukulele ( by a well taught Player)!!
Up North we give the Guitar to much credit
We don't give it too much credit, we just don't give the uke enough.
can u teach me this plz much appreciated
its like stevie rae on the uke. wow.

Dill Da Souza classic or classic rock
sounds like a hawaiian super mario theme
Can someone tell me the chords?☺️
Fabulous playing but one little girl has once again made the the ukulele famously popular for this time period and of course I'm speaking of Grace Vanderwaal.. Israel Kamakawiwool version of Somewhere over the rainbow is still popular.
Singers are always at the top of the heap and their pay checks reflect this.
Is that a guitalele?

Tip your hat back a bit the next shoot...
made me nearly wet. Great video
I do not doubt his feelings for his teacher or influence but no tears were there. Fake. He’s really good, Amazing even. But do not think for a second that he was crying. Especially when you can’t see his eyes. Sorry for being the one that points it out. I feel what he’s saying but don’t believe he shed a tear right there and then.
Kakean omong
It's rare that music gets to me in this way; but this has absolutely ruined me.
Just no, this is not possible
Nice but your chords are jumbled together.
lmao
Your mentor really helped to create a beautiful person and wonderful musician (:
