- Few people would consider the ukulele a serious musical instrument. Until, that is, they hear Jake Shimabukuro play one. Jakes uncommon compositions and playing techniques defy labels and categories, and he lays down jazz, blues, funk, classical, bluegrass, folk, flamenco and rock with equal virtuosity. Occasional tours with Jimmy Buffett & The Coral Reefer Band have broadened his experience and brought his talent and charming stage presence to crowds of up to fifty thousand people. Jake has also performed on NBCs The Late Show with Conan OBrien, The Today Show, and Last Call With Carson Daly, and been featured on NPRs Morning Edition and World Café, Public Radio Internationals The World, and others. In December 2009, he performed with Bette Midler for Queen Elizabeth during a special fundraising concert in Blackpool, England.

"...I truly believe that the 'ukulele is the instrument of peace."
truly, this man is a favored son of the islands, taking aloha far beyond our seas
Mahalo well said!
Wow! Jake Shimabukuro is such a talented ukulele player! He's so full of life and has a burning passion for music! I'm here because of Josh Kaufman.
Magic! He is the master of his instrument. Once he starts playing, you forget the instrument, you're just completely absorbed by the music.
Jake is a phenomenal soul...his playing gives me chills...utterly amazing!
Dats just da lupus
When I was in elementary school in Hawaii in the 3rd grade back in 08' this guy came to my elementary school and played this song for us
Jake! You are the master! My goodness. What a thrill to listen to you. Your love for your instrument is evident, too. I'm a 62 yr old grandma just learning to play the uke. I love it. I'm excited and I'll get there, in my dreams. Thanks for sharing your gift.

this is the sweetest message on the internet
How's your ukulele playing coming along? I hope you're finding peace in your playing
he has a very calming voice
1:37 - Let's Dance
5:50 - Ave Maria
12:55 - While my guitar gentle weeps
18:30 - In my life.
Let me know if I missed any or wrote the wrong times :)
Everyone gets told at least a hundred times a week to go out and do this and do that because you only get one life so you have to make it memorable and amazing and imperfect. But the pressure and reality of that is not everyone is as free as most people feel you or they should be. People like Jake bring me back to the now and the simple joys of having simple passions and living and breathing the things you love to do most, there's no pressure in having and being the best of everything, but if one thing's the best to you then that's all you need :) he's amazing at what he does and i'm glad i came across this today, it was much a needed lift :)
👏
His rendition of the Ave Maria is pure magic
Thank you Jake, my ears are so happy they could dance.
He´s simply a god on his instrument. And a genius as composer as well. How I love this style of performing. absolutely adorable music
Jake doesn’t play the music, he is the music.
Ave Maria was just beautiful!
ukalele is everywhere on youtube! I love it! This is definitely the most talented, pure ukalele music I've heard out of all of it. Thank you! It was beautiful.
I could listen to this whole day. I listen to 'Let's dance' every morning. And I love my life. Awesome Jake.
Some players need 12 or 6 strings for performance but Jake has just 4 strings and Wow a master on uke! God blessings for your life!
its not just that he is a very good uculele player, he writes beautiful music as well which makes him a remarkable musician.. chapeau!
I love this ukulele version of this "My Guitar Gently Weeps", makes me smile all the time..
good job man!
Wow! Incredible!! I had no idea the Ukulele was so versatile. Thank you for showing me what a beautiful instrument it truly is. Exquisite rendition of Ave Maria! You inspire me sir. :)
He always sounds like playing more than only ONE Uke ;-)
So awesome!!!
Ave Maria at 6:00 is hauntingly beautiful
I also play the Ukulele and I have enjoyed this lecture from Jake! I can't wait to see him in person when I can!
We will never see anyone or anything like Jake again. See him as much as you can, as often as you can. We will be able, when we're old, to say "I saw Jake Shimabukuru play', and the children then will be wistful, and will dream.
Those are some mad skills! Your passion is contagious.
I never realised what a beautiful instrument that ukelele can be and is. It was a privilege to listen to. Thank you.
Years ago, when I was in Honolulu, a little guy was playing the Ukelele on the beach.
He came and played for us in the PINK HOTEL. He was special, just like you. I like your voice. You could sing for us too! Well done, Lindsay Sidwell
Nice connection between ukulele and peace!
Just wow! I started to love this instrument!

Beautifully humble, you deserve every success!
a fantastic performance & so happy to have been there to see it! Thanks Jake and TEDTokyoX!
What a wonderful performace! These comfortable sounds makes me happy !
I've never thought I'll hear a piece of music by the famous Carlos Montoya played on a ukele. Such a great performance. Real pro!
Heard Jake on Chicago radio recently. What a talent and what a cool guy!
OMG HE IS A LEGENDDDDDD!!!!!!
I love this man. Such JOY.
His performance with Bette Midler for Queen Elizabeth II made no sense to me on paper, and then I SAW it. It was truly remarkable and a couple of Midler's finest moments ever on stage.
God Bless Jake!
Wow your amazing. My name is Grant, and you have truly inspired me to play the ukulele. You are one of the best ukulele players i have ever heard. Your right up there with Israel Kamakawiwo'ole. Im going to start tomorrow and my goal is to play "while my guitar gently weeps" just like you. Keep up your amazing work!
Wow!
There's Jake, and then there's everybody else.
I saw him open for Bela Fleck a few years ago at Wolftrap, in Vienna, VA, and my girlfriend said, "Who the hell is this kid and why isn't he a household name?"
I said, "He's Jake. Help spread the word."
Truly extraordinary, transporting actually. There is power in this music.
43-year-old here, just learnt the uke for the last 2 weeks. In order to record a song I wrote (my guit is too "full" a sound to create that light shuffle feel).
Inspired by your mastery and soulfulness of your uke playing, almost like you're dancing and love-making with that masterpiece of a machine (a Kamaka at that!).
Someday, who knows, I may go beyond just strumming chords for the last two weeks of a new beauty of an instrument.
Amazing Jake! WOW
Thank you Jake !
He really is an extraordinary artist... what a great musician he truly is. I love him to bits.
Absolutely Heavenly, thank you Jake
I felt tears well up for some of the songs performed here. I'm hooked!!!
That is as good as it gets, Thank you
It's not his speed or knowledge or his control over his instrument, it's the height of dynamics his magical fingers can produce with his incredible brain.
Mesmerising master of the Ukulele... and a lovely guy. Great vid thanks
So beautiful ✨
I love your voice ♡
Such beautiful artistry . . .

Pure genius.
A true virtuoso, wow, oh wow!
Still one of the worlds best on this instrument.
It is not about speed but about tone and intonation ...
