      Can you define often? Is that a few times a year/month/week? I have watched a number of these videos and that seems to be the sentiment, go with diesel if you plan to tow often. I plan to tow long trips (1000+ miles) 2 times a year and short trips (200-300 miles) 3-5 times a year. The rest of the time is driving to/from work (15+ miles a weekday) in a city. Is diesel better for that?

      Pay extra $8000 to get the diesel. Enjoy the extra power and more capable truck. Trade it off and get a extra $7500 because it's a diesel.

    In the old days, diesels were simpler so they were easier and cheaper to maintain. And traditionally diesel fuel was cheaper than gasoline. Now diesels are far more costly to buy and maintain and diesel fuel is much more expensive. So, the scenario has flipped. Unless you are towing the heaviest of loads or tow routinely at higher elevations I think gas is a better and cheaper option. With the smarts that GM and others have added to gas engines in the last couple years I think you should do this video again.

    I pondered getting a new diesel. Priced out a lower trim Silverado 2500 with a Duramax, had it optioned decently (nowhere near loaded) and landed right at $56000. Contacted a dealer, they were not interested in ordering the truck I configured and tried hard to get me to buy the LTs and High Country models they had on the lot for $10k more minimum. So I did what any logical guy would do: hunted down a '07 Silverado 3500 classic with a LBZ. Power to the people, don't be afraid to walk out of a dealership to find what you want.

      I was super lucky to find a 36,000 mile "summers only" '04 F250 XLT 2WD crew cab with V-10 here in MI, with absolutely no rust, even under the chassis. It pulls our 10,000 lb (loaded) toy hauler travel trailer without a problem. I can watch the gas gauge move when towing up a long hill on the freeway, but as few miles as I put on it, the impact is low. I'd love to have a newer F250, but I can't justify that kind of investment sitting in the garage most of the time, not to mention what the cost per mile would be using it less than 2000 miles per year (stored winters).

      +JackZakowski I was just thinking about that. I own a 6.7L, and I had that servicing done over a year ago. Like everything, it's cheaper at an independent shop. I had my truck done for ~$800, but that was just the CCVF and EGR system. If you combine that with the other recommended servicing around that interval, it'll be over $1,000, even at an Independent diesel shop. I bet a dealer would charger ~$1,500 or more for everything.

    It’s funny because a gas engine today will pull just as well as a diesel from the late 90s, early 2000s. (Given the transmission ratios, more gears). I used to be guilty of slamming 3/4 ton gassers, then I took a step back and thought logically. I need a half ton, but would like the durability and longevity of HD parts; get an HD gasser.

    Economically Diesels do not make sense any more. However if you tow heavy regularly it may be worth the extra money to you. Just don't believe you will ever make up for the initial high cost of the diesel engine.
    Higher maintenance costs, plus the fact that diesel is often not the cheaper fuel anymore means the old method of making up for the initial cost in mpg is no longer valid.

I'm averaging 14.5 MPG (Not towing/hauling) using Chevron 87 octane gas and a K&N drop in air filter. Just bought a 2015 Chevy Silverado 2500HD gas. I don't tow a lot. Mostly, boats, trailer, and the occasional tractor. I was looking at a diesel, but I didn't want to deal with extra maintenance or extra cost. These trucks are not Prius, they drink gas no matter what. My chevy has the flex fuel engine. This makes a great difference. The bottom line, it cost me .24 a mile with flex fuel (103 octane) and .35 a mile with 91 octane gas (I live in Cali). I literally save 53.00 dollars with E85 every time I fill up. I am very happy with the Gas Chevy. As you said, it also sounds cool!!

    Whenever you do a comparison between gas and diesel, cost has to be a factor. Initial cost, cost of fuel and maintenance.and then the longterm cost of major repairs. When money is not a factor, the diesel will almost always perform better. But if you are buying an HD truck and you know realistically that you probably won't tow something more than 10-20 times a year, you have to evaluate the extra expense of the diesel. I find diesels to be amazing trucks but I know that when I get an HD truck I will probably tow less than 10 times a year so for me it will definitely be a gasser.

    I love ALL trucks! But having been a Nissan owner since the late 80s, and owning two previous Titans, I went with the heavier than 1/2 ton Titan XD Diesel and couldn't be happier. The point is, buy what YOU like and need. Had I needed to haul 15k lbs frequently, i'd have looked into a heavier duty truck. People buy trucks for MANY reasons, one being a comfort zone or familiarity. At over 13k miles so far, I love this truck.

    • @jameshenson4871
      @jameshenson4871 Před 7 lety

      Joenissan you are always on point. I just purchased a 2017 Titan XD Pro 4x with the Cummins turbo diesel. Hauled at least 6k behind it more than not. The most I have hauled is around 7500# and so far and this truck didn't even break a sweat. The XD gets a bad rap but once you own one and understand why Nissan placed it where it did, it becomes crystal clear of the reasoning. I didn't need a full 3/4 ton but needed more capability that the average 1/2 ton provided. I understand that the F150 will tow up to 11,500 or in that neighborhood (I don't have the exact number in front of me but you get the idea) but the XD will do it everyday all day. That is what separates trucks. Is the XD better than everything out there? Why no, but if you tow what it is meant to tow it is an excellent option. I really believe that the XD's capacity is conservatively rated. My XD came with a lifetime powertrain warranty-so that debunks the diesel has a higher repair cost than gas argument in my particular example. As far as the domestic 3/4 ton gas vs gasoline- I haul lots of trailers and would find myself better suited for the diesel. The keyboard warriors that state oh gas is better than diesel, blah, blah, blah and diesel cost more, blah , blah, blah really aren't giving the full story. I bet if someone gave them the difference in cost between the diesel and gas burner they would choose the diesel. It is just like people who try to justify buying a metric cruiser over the Harley. I get the metric cruiser my be a better bike but the resale, nostalgia and sheer reasoning I just own a Harley wins every time. Deep down in they will never say it but they really wanted the Harley!

    • @Icutmetal

    These guys must be smoking too much of the local stuff out there in CO. "The diesel absolutely trounces the gas for fuel mileage" Really? I traded my 2007 GMC 3500 6.0L for a 2012 3500 Duramax. My gas truck got 15mpg empty and the diesel gets about the same. I can get better with the diesel IF I'm in absolutely no hurry. But if I step it up some on the interstate, the Dmax may only get 14mpg. The gas truck pretty much got the same mileage no matter how you drove it. And I'd be shocked if any of the new diesel trucks beat 15mpg empty or 10 towing.
    Towing: I could tow anything I hooked to with either truck. I've grossed 40k with the gas truck and got decent mileage, maybe 8-9mpg. I've also pulled lighter loads and worked it hard to maintain highway speed and seen as low as 4.5mpg. The Dmax will pull anything and usually get about 9-10mpg loaded but I've pushed it as low as 6-7 as well.
    Maintenance: Pretty much zero on the gas truck for 105k miles. Diesel - one thing after another and NOTHING is cheap. The government's Tier 4 BS has ruined diesel trucks. Period. Diesel trucks used to be very dependable and durable and ran a long time with very little maintenance. Now there's always something wrong with them. Myself and everyone i know have been stranded by our diesel trucks at some point, which used to be almost unheard of.
    Day to day: You can gas up anywhere but you'd better buy your diesel somewhere that you trust to have good fuel. Then add fuel additives to keep from gelling up in the winter and use a fuel treatment year round to take care of your gold plated diesel fuel system.
    I haul for a living and thinking very seriously about going back to a gas truck. About the only thing holding me back is getting a pickup and large trailer to a gas pump nowadays. Modern gas stations have gone absolutely out of their way to keep larger combination vehicles out of the gas pump islands.

    Hey guys, I have a question? I work 120 miles from home, for the last year I have been driving my 2017 ram tradesmen 5.7 hemi, crewcab with a short bed while towing a 3750 lb. travel trailer to stay in for the week. I work at a place that has an rv park on location. I live in Bakersfield, Ca and travel to Ridgecrest, Ca. I go through Tehachapi, Ca. that has a 4% grade. I was thinking of going to a diesel because I have been making this weekly commute for a year now. Honestly I use a half a tank of fuel when pulling that trailer by the time I get to the rv park and vise versa going back home. I am going to upgrade in the near future for a larger rv.

    The big three also have "heavy duty" transmissions for their gas trucks. The driveability is a mute point with intake heaters and VG Turbos. You guys never talked about brackets of weight to pull, or put in sliders for how far someone plans on pulling weight. For instance, if I pull 20k lbs but only pull the load 20 miles or less (hauling livestock from one pasture to another) then a gas model is perfect for that. But if I pull weight on interstate, then diesel starts to become more enticing. Are you guys ever going to think out your videos before shooting them?

Then Chevy started kicking ass with those early Duramaxes and I had diesel envy again. But these days I've reassessed. Regulatory requirements have ruined diesels. And I honestly feel diesel's days are numbered in California. So, I have a 2016 Silverado 2500hd flex fuel gasser and it does everything I need. It's actually a lot faster than people claim. I hit 0-60 in 8 seconds. Why would I want an HD truck to go faster? It's for towing, not racing.

    Being that you see so so so many 3/4 and 1 ton trucks pulling 12' uhaul trailers, one is left to assume the vast majority buy diesel to supplement other short comings. Just about the only place you see trucks really getting used are at small construction companies, and the rodeo / race car circuit. I believe we as Americans have been stupid and allowed corporations to place such a high value on diesel. I own both diesel and gas. If I didn't have a need to pull 15k + I wouldn't own a diesel. The 6.0 LS, 6.2 Ford, and 6.4 Mopar are fine motors and aren't given the credit due. And by the way RAM owners, you left your tow mirrors out. You aren't towing and no one kicked a field goal. Put them down.

      Or, and these are just ideas... size of tire, rating of tire, air pressure in said tire. Offset of rim in rear vs offset in front. Suspension. Height of truck, height of ball, trailer not being level. Tongue weight. Axles on trailer not in alignment. Axles on trailer too far forward.
      Towing is tough. It's even tougher when you realize everything you need to spend money on to pull weight. Sometimes I wonder if it would've been cheaper to drive a car, live in an apartment, have just a cube farm job, and waste my days commenting on youtube.

Between the higher price if diesel, the DEF costs, high initial cost, and potential repair costs of the all the modern diesel related components in this video, it makes very little sense. I am a diesel enthusiast, but I have to factor in that I will never haul that much weight and $9-10k can buy more petrol than I would save in diesel consumption.

    Depends... If you are towing under 9k and not too often... Gas would be the way to go. But towing anything consistently or if you have to tow something heavier... I would go with diesel. I have a 5th Wheel Tow Hauler that can weight up to 14k. I tried a Ram 2500 with the 6.4L V-8... That engine stressed me out. Body wise it was smooth and handled the load great. But any hill required the engine to be near redline all of the time, and even in the flats it needed to be in a high RPM. After 2 months I got rid of it and purchased the 2015 Ram 2500 6.7L. Now these new Diesel trucks are not as good as they used to be either with all the EPA "JUNK!!!" and the "nanny programming" they put in them. Now days they put the larger tires on them as stock, and now they also put 3.42 gears in them. Sure empty it is nice for MPG's. But for towing... No, not as nice since the engine is being lugged. I have dropped 2 MPG's towing the same camper from my 2007.5 MegaCab CRD 4x4 to my 2015 Crew Cab CRD 4x4.
    Also with the DPF and EGR... How STUPID is the EPA?? EGR is designed to return exhaust gas to reduce the temperatures of combustion... But to keep the DPF clean or to do a Regen.... They are running the temperature of the exhaust lot higher than the older trucks(hence higher combustion temps)... Doesn't that just nullify what the EGR is supposed to do?? Plus now you are burning more fuel, you have less power, less longevity since you are making your engine suck its own poo, and more maintenance.
    Sure your emissions drop at the truck level, but more pollution is created when they make the Ultra-Low Sulfur Diesel that you need more of. It is like a Prius... Sure great MPG's, but to create the batteries needed you are killing the environment even more than running a standard car. So much for "Saving the planet".

      @markpitchford7375 Před 6 lety +1
