Exactly. The argument of "no it's not good because it's plastic" has been debunked a long time ago. Hell, the video of the guys throwing it off a roof and hitting it with a hammer is proof enough that it's fairly sturdy.

I bought a Bay ST and it arrived in early June. I finally got it out on the water this weekend and again today. I just love the boat. I am an experienced kayaker and the boat exceeded expectations.

My wife has claimed the Beach and I have sort of claimed the Bay. For what we do, the Beach would have served both of us better. This includes using them on Lake Superior on an Upper Peninsula trip a few weeks back.

I own a Brompton folding bike. Best folding bike on earth. You pay a premium price for quality in a small package sometimes. Nature of the beast. I don't kayak but I can see the allure of these.

As someone who had, and loved, Feathercraft and Folbot kayaks, but spent many hours assembling, disassembling, re-waterproofing, re-rivetting, and so on, this looks a real advance.
But it looks like water can get in through the fold on the deck. Is that correct?
If so, can one get inflatable pockets for the compartments like the Folbots used to include?
Smart designs overall, but the Beach definitely wants to go in a circle. I love how two of them could fit in a compact car.

Very cool, never saw them before. How is the drag in the water with them compared to a regular hard sided kayak? They seem to move well from the video
they move really well. the Bay is not as stable but faster.
I live in Sydney Australia, I'm seriously having trouble to choose which model above to buy. Does the BEACH model have any capability against any waves such as a bay condition? or you can only use it in still water like a lake? However it looks really more comfortable than the BAY model. Really hard for me to choose.

I saw a dare for a over niter. I double that dare! Yeah those kayaks are awesome! I'm thinking about getting a kayak sometime this year. I doubt one of these just because, but hopefully I can find a used one that's a lot less expensive.

This looks *fantastic* for someone who is perfectly capable of paddling on my own save carrying my kayak around. We already have a fleet of kayaks: inflatable, rotomolded, and airalite, but I cannot carry any of them easily, and kayaking is one of the things I love to do. Thanks for sharing this, it looks incredible and I will definitely want to find out more. Any idea if you can roof rack it though, or does it have to be folded between trips?

The storage is the most best thing about the kayaks.
I seen this on shark tank looked at other CZcams videos and seen some did not hold up good for the price of the kayak. I am looking forward to seeing you review this.

The advantages of these are why I went to packrafts. My packrafts aren't as fast but they're lighter likely more stable and pack smaller.
FlashGeiger I thought about an inflatable but the hassle of inflation and deflation kept me from buying.
Packrafts are low pressure, so it's just a few minutes of non strenuous activity pushing air from a pillowcase into the boat. Inflatable kayaks are likely higher pressure and need pumps of some sort, I expect. Deflation isn't any harder than for air mattresses (although it is wetter).
Those kayaks are likely faster, so if you aren't going to be backpacking them they're a good choice, I imagine. But I portage my packraft so the 6 lb weight is an advantage.
A high quality inflatable is faster to set up (fill time), weight is around the same, cost is lower, performance can be better than Oru (depending on make/model), stability much better, able to better carry more gear. I've paddled the Oru and was not impressed, but since I'm a longtime paddler (some day old), there ae features and performance that I want, especially considering all the short cuts with Oru vs their cost. Are they a good kayak? Sure. But in my view, there are better choices if looking for portability, performance on the water, ease of setup, and cost.

Those are really cool. I have a 9 yr. old son, our only water close by is the Colorado River, definitely need a safer boat for the summer. Early spring and late fall we take the canoe, but high eater is no place for the the old Pelican.

Neil Archer I've taken mine out on Class II+ water for an overnight trip. It was great if your gear is relatively compact.
I've done a few overnight trips in a 2015 bay and loved it. I sold the bay though and I'm getting a coast XT because I moved to the ocean and I wanted a longer kayak

IMO the hardware will ware out before the hull will. There haven't really been a lot of issues with the hull wearing out. But I wish they would have used aluminum for some of the key load baring hardware.
Hi at Ben. I hope you still see these comments. I'm super interested in getting the Oru Bay. Now that you've had it for a year what are your thoughts? Is it more or less durable than you originally thought? Have you used the Bay in calm ocean conditions? You mentioned the Bay was less stable. Is that just for loading or do you feel it's less stable in the water? I want to buy but so nervous because it's not a small investment, but if it works well then it's worth it to me.

They seem a bit overpriced, most likely due to their unique construction, but seems like a good investment as Emergency or light recreation kayak.
if it or when it fails, be it a hole or crack, you could always keep a small fiberglass kit with you. Or even do a whole fiberglass wrap after the 20k+ wear from regular use you mentioned.

Kayaks for people with more money than brains I think.....they seem ridiculously over priced for what they are. Fantastic concept and idea. Seriously guys I’d consider looking somewhere like ‘advanced elements’ products if you don’t have the room from hard shells at home.
I would be interested to see these off the coast line, with a mild surf, fitted with a spray skirt (the enclosed cockpit one) how much water do they let in then? That I would like to see.
How do they track? I didn’t notice any tracking fins, and they seem to ride quite high?

The Coast XT model is meant for open water and waves.
I used to use that same material as signage. It will be brittle junk in a couple of years. Also, folding plastic constantly is always going to cause failure eventually and creates tension that will be really weak to any impact. I can't believe people pay so much for a product that is guaranteed to fail.

I remember seeing these when they first started popping up on Instagram, really cool idea and concept especially as something to keep in your car or for the people who might want a "bug out" yak lol, but just not practical for me when I saw the price vs what I could get for he same amount elsewhere.
I admit I am able to have my Ocean Kayak BGProwler because I have a storage unit it fits in but still, for $1300 and only a capacity of 300lbs, people
could get a real kayak that will last way longer. I can guarantee this would not have made it through this last 95mile trip I did, one buckle breaks or piece of plastic and then what? I can patch my kayak if a hole gets warn into it ya know?

when you buy a product you are paying for the idea, the design, the labor, the fasteners, the materials (which are much more than coroplast), the marketing, the packaging etc. Welcome to creating a product and marketing it to consumers. Could you make one on your own, sure good luck with that. It is priced accordingly and made in the USA. I'm sure if it was made in China it would be less so maybe you can wait for that.

i meant the the main material isn't the only part. bow and stern covers, fasteners, seat, pads, hull supports etc. tell you what, make one up, then make a video on it and tell everyone how cheap you made it for and then market it and sell it around the world!
Living Survival less than $150 in materials. I'm not saying they shouldn't be compensated for their design, but let's not get this twisted, marking up a product 100x is asinine. Especially for a temporary product. This kayak won't last long term, not compared to traditional kayaks that are similarly priced. These aren't being used in true survival situations. A large portion of the markup on traditional kayaks is simply the shipping costs getting them to retailers or customers. This is an overpriced toy for folks with more money than brains.
Living Survival I'm not saying it isn't a very cool product, at $500-600 it's would be almost a no brainer for occasional use. At $1,300 there are much more durable and capable options.
Nice Kayaks but indeed, VASTLY over priced, at least from looking at their web page. The real value is nowhere near the MSRP. An old Folboat sailor and paddler from the 60s.
I tried a Folbot once. It felt like I was paddling in cement. I got a real kayak, a Current Designs Kestral. I got tired of car topping it, so I bought an Oru Bay ST. It is worth every penny and is very similar in performance to the Current Designs boat.
$1300 to $1600, that's NUTZ for what you are getting! Hard to complain about how much that roof rack cost vs the cost of these origami kayaks. Not a fan for that price at all.

I started following you based on your gear reviews but recently (not counting your "cheap hammock" review) your videos are all super high-end gear options. Btw, my backyard is the Chattahoochee so I have weekly time on the water and have never owned a $1000 kayak.
my videos have always been and always will be based on the gear I own and gear i use. I do a mix of expensive and affordable options however I see fit. for this product it is perfect for me in an apartment regardless of price. that's great that you never owned a $1000 kayak.

the other kayaks I was researching were the jackson tupelo, old town loon and the wilderness systems pungo. I believe they were all $800-$1000. keep in mind for me i want a durable fishing or multi-day kayak and the cheaper options (pelican) just don't work for me. I've rented them and they are great for just kicking around for an hour or two but for serious travel or time on the water no thanks.

Living Survival you know, when you think about it that way, it doesn't make sense. You're going to spend five to $600 on a kayak and another five to $600 on a rack so you're right there anyway. And then you don't have all that stuff in the air dragging down your gas mileage too.

I'm the type of person who if I'm not in the woods or on the river, then I'm probably in the middle of plaining my next trip to the woods or the river. In 2014 I lived in town in a small apartment and I only had a car to get around in. I ended up not being able to do a lot of river trips because I just didn't have the space for a watercraft and no way to transport it. Spring of 2015 I coat wind of what Oru was doing building these folding kayaks and I got my self a 12ft 2015 bay and loved it. I used it through the spring and summer for several multi day river trips and loved it. If you don't want to spend 1200 for the bay from REI or ORU, you can get an older model now for under 1000 if you do some searching. I think Sam's club was actually selling them for 500 at one point. But I will say that the new 2017 models are nice. That's why I've sold my 2015 bay and I'm waiting for REI to send me my Coast XT any day now.
