    I love this kayak brand. I think I was born to swim and paddle. We are going full time RV and these are perfect in so many ways. While I like this model, we each will carry a dog so have to have room in the cockpit. The hard part is choosing which model. I want a tandem, one of these, one of those, the other .....lol

      Hi Kiki 👋 - Full time RV’ing sounds like a lot of fun. I hope to do that one day, maybe in retirement. While I have used ORU a lot in the past, I have since moved on to inflatables. The Sea Eagle line of inflatable kayaks offers much more in the way of safety, performance, simplicity to put together and overall long term quality. Check out my review on the RazorLite kayak, here is the link: czcams.com/video/wCpz9gl_8Nc/video.html

    Thank you for the in-depth reviews of both the Bay ST and Coastal. Living on an island in the Pacific Northwest, I want a kayak that’s capable of handling both inlet and Sound waters. Your review of the Coastal has nudged me in that direction.

    I like the idea of these kayaks. Especially good for full time RVers like us. We have two Eddyline 12’ Skylarks we carry on top of our Jeep. They are about 41lbs each. My kayaking has come to a complete halt. Over the summer we toured up the east coast and somehow injured my right shoulder kayaking around NY in August. Repetitive motion of paddling I guess gave me a bad case of tendinitis and impingement. Been going for physical therapy but the right shoulder is taking it’s time to heal. Haven’t been on the water since before Labor Day.

      @KayakCliff  Před 3 lety

      Thanks for watching and your comments! Sorry to hear about your shoulder. About two years ago I had a bad impingement with tendinitis in my shoulders as well. I went to the orthopedic and he put a Cortizone shot in both shoulders and sent me to physical therapy rehab. That was the ticket, it’s been two years and I am in good condition now with my shoulder. It took me about 3-4 months of physical therapy and exercises to get back to normal.

    I added accessible deck hatches (FORSUN 6 Inch Hole Diameter Deck Hatch with Cat Bag for Kayak Boat Fishing Rigging www.amazon.com/dp/B015B1E4BS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_5N8G1J2CWPX4090186SX?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1) to my Bay ST. The fact that you have to take apart the back in order to access any storage sucks but these hatches make it so much easier to access the back even while you're in the water. It works great for the Bay. I could see some problems with the Coast though because of the extra bulkhead right behind the seat which seems positioned right where I have my hatches on the Bay.

    Hi, thanks for this. I studied your video and then bought the Coast directly from Oru (sorry). It arrived 2 weeks ago and I have since assembled and disassembled it twice. It's still deep winter here so I have a few weeks to get the kayak folds to develop memory. I bought the air bags as well, they are very nifty. Did you ever try the backpack that comes with it? Sitting in the kayak in my basement, I have realized that there is indeed not much room for my feet. I'm only 5'5" and average weight, that was a bit of a surprise. My Coast didn't come with thigh braces, apparently they're working on improving them. I did order the nylon sprayskirt and found it easy to fit (again, only in the basement so far). I ordered an extra seat pad, hoping that this will be enough. I find folding it back together very tricky, but I think that will get better eventually.

    • @KayakCliff
      @KayakCliff  Před 2 lety +1

      Hi Elisabeth! Congratulations on your new ORU Coast! Yes, I have used the backpack, in fact I checked it on a plane a few times in the backpack. Yes, your boat will develop more memory as you fold and unfold it. As for the seat pad, if two ORU pads doesn’t work, just order a higher quality and thicker one for the best support. You are right, now much room for your feet. I have mens size 11 feet and that is one of my gripes. Well, safe adventuring out there in 2022!

    • @KayakCliff
      @KayakCliff  Před 2 lety

      Hello Mind Milk - No, I have never used a spray skirt with the ORU. I think it’s pretty straight forward and should work like one does on my other touring kayaks where I occasionally wear a spray skirt.

    • @magicalleela666
      @magicalleela666 Před 2 lety +1

      I got a spray skirt for my Bay ST. Sizing on Seals said that I needed a 1.2, but it's too small, or rather, the elastic was a tab too short, and it was a tight fit. I have to return it. Double check on the sizing.

  • @shaun4787
    @shaun4787 Před rokem +1

    How does the Coast compare to the Bay in terms of speed, stability and tracking? You've reviewed both, but I'd like to hear why you upgraded from the Bay to the Coast. I have had a Bay ST for about 6 months. I want to venture into kayak camping. After putting two float bags in the Bay ST. There's not enough space left for a tent, sleeping bag and supplies, etc. There's only a small space between the bow bulkhead and the foot rest and the large space behind the seat. I heard the Coast is faster, tracks far better(16' vs 12') and also less tippy. So I've been thinking about selling the Bay and upgrade to a Coast. I don't do ocean kayaking, just in the river and lake. Thanks.

      That’s a great idea, thank you for the suggestion. I will put that on my list to do. Basically, I believe the Sea Eagle out performs The folding platform in all the ways that I want a kayak to perform. I would like to put that in a concise explanation in a video though.

      @@KayakCliff Good to know Cliff. Thank you.
      The one thing that makes me have some interest in folding kayaks like the ORU Inlet or the TuckTech is setup/tear down time. Both claim much faster setup time. I'm not sure sure about tear down time however, which is equally important. It could be true that their claims of fast setup time are not from a typical user though.

    I love my Coast XT, but it's still not as fast as a similar sized hardshell touring yak. My Pygmy Arctic tern 17 has the same overall hull design (greenland style hard chines) as my Coast XT and it has way better glide and tracking. The big design flaw in ORUs is the neoprene bow/stern fairings. They don't slice through water, but plow and you can hear the water churning and clearly see the drag they create in your video. Orus certainly aren't cheap, but they're overall one of the best performing collapsible kayak for the money. If you don't have storage and transport limitations, then a lightweight hardshell is gonna be a better value. If you do buy an Oru, make sure to get bow/stern float bags for safety and an inflatable thermarest seat, because everyone complains about Oru's stock seat.

    • @KayakCliff
      @KayakCliff  Před 2 lety

      I made the same observation over time about the efficiency of the Oru hull. It does plow through water instead of slice. My new go to for a travel kayak is the Sea Eagle 393RL. It’s extremely efficient and fast, cuts through the water nicely.

    I think when you zipped the back your bigger bulkhead wasn't in right position (see 10:25). In my opinion that boat is a somewhat fiddly origami solution with just a bit more quirks than features … a colleague just ordered one - I am curious to check its practicability in reality.

      I agree Jim, it was a little difficult the first time I put together an ORU. The material is a little stiff the first couple times, but it builds a memory overtime and it becomes much easier. The paddler, also builds a memory overtime on how to put it together, LOL. Which model did you get?

      Hi there Ruben, thank you for asking! I have updated the comments in my description box for both of my ORU review videos. I have since moved on to inflatables. In fact, I finally have sold all of my hard shell kayaks and I own five C eagle inflatables. I have also sold my ORU kayaks.

      Here are two reviews on inflatable kayaks from SeaEagle. There is no comparison to the origami folding kayaks.
      They cut through water better
      They carry much more payload.
      They are faster in my opinion.
      If they swamp, they do not sink.
      Their quality is much better and they hold up much longer. I know many that have owned a Sea Eagle for 10+ years.
      I have also updated my website with my endorsed products that I use and wholeheartedly believe in.

      I hope this helps, safe adventuring out there!

    For the kayak made of Corriboard it costs many times more then it would make sense

    • @KayakCliff
      @KayakCliff  Před 2 lety +2

      What you are paying for is the design & function of the boat, the labor to put it together and engineer it and all the parts & pieces that make up the whole boat. The story is the same when you consider a conventional rotomolded plastic kayak. All it consists of is a bucket of small round plastic pellets in different colors that are then melted and spun around in a hot mold to form the final kayak. The bucket of plastic pellets doesn’t cost anywhere near what the final price of a plastic rotomolded kayak costs. Same thing again could be said for a quality drop stitch inflatable kayak and so on and so on . . .

    • @KayakCliff

      ORU advertised many hundred folds. I don't know how Trak would stand up to daily packing away and setting up, and how it would do setting up and taking down on a sandy beach.

      I want to know more about how it handles. I have fishing kayaks that I use for bird photography, which means I'm using them while holding $3K worth of equipment.
      I could not tip those kayaks over if I tried.
      How stable is the Coast? Especially as compared to the Bay model.
      Thanks for responding.

    • @KayakCliff
      @KayakCliff  Před 3 lety +3

      I find that the kayak is as stable as any other 16 foot touring kayak that I have paddled. It does edge extremely nice and is pretty maneuverable, while it is also a good tracker. I find that it does not cut through the water as efficiently as a typical touring kayak. It’s just the front of the hull at the bow tends to plow into the water a little bit more than cut. My biggest problem with the boat is the height of the cockpit is very low. I am not able to extend my feet vertically without hitting the top of the kayak. Pretty tight in there for long days of paddling. I found that the uncomfortable seating was rectified by using sweet cheeks. Hope this helps!

      Thanks for watching and commenting! I will leave the pricing to Ou. I don’t put pricing in my videos, because that could fluctuate, thereby rendering the pricing I give in my videos useless. Just go to Oru Kayak on their website and you will see what the pricing is.

      I am no longer an affiliate for ORU. I have since moved on from ORU as my foldable / portable kayak of choice to Sea Eagle RazorLite.
      I believe Sea Eagle products FAR exceed ORU in:
      * Quality
      * Customer Service
      * Speed & performance on the water
      * Safety
      * Load carrying capacity
      In my opinion, Pakayak is another much better option than ORU.

    The Oru kayak is an interesting concept for sure, but after viewing some of their advertisements on their site, I will pass on buying one. They show people drinking while on the water and going into conditions without adequate equipment (winter and cold water without immersion protection). I'll instead spend my money on equipment from companies that advocate safe and responsible paddling.
