    This was my unit - thanks for having the patience to look at it and tolerate my piss-poor attempt at fixing it heh, it was my first time soldering and I only really did the two wires by the DC converter, must've accidentally yanked the wire off and didn't notice when I was replacing the belts.
    I had gotten it for 100 dollars and didn't really mind the meh condition it was in (the drilled holes in the door were there already, I never really knew why it was like that), just liking that it had worked (Yes it had worked perfectly up until the playback seemed to stop, tried to replace the belts on it then and thats when the nightmare started), then when it died suddenly one day I just freaked out and tried to service it on my own, bad idea.
    Also on the shipping it was my first time shipping to Canada so I was abit confused, just glad it got to you though.

      @@toffee3944 No problem. These ones are tedious to work on. Your belts are a little on the tight side but it's working despite being a little beat up. Had I showed mine that I picked up for 10 bucks you would be drooling as mine is almost perfect condition. I just happened to be in the 2nd hand store when a guy came out of the back pushing a cart of stuff on it. I saw the D5 and grabbed it. Hadn't even been priced yet. They guy said 10 bucks and I said perfect.There was another guy there eyeing it, and I grabbed it off the cart first. He was not happy said he wanted it and I said too bad so sad, you snooze you loose. Then when i got to the register I was asked if I was over 55 and i said yes and I got 10% off!

      Good score on getting the D5M for $10.00. I just discovered your channel a few days ago. I had my suspicions that you had worked for Sony, or a warranty depot of theirs, because you seemed quite comfortable around their products. When I spotted you using an official Sony Walkman screwdriver on the D5M, my suspicions were confirmed. I worked in the Sony factory service centre in Richmond for 12 years in the early eighties, as an audio tech at first, and then as a video tech. I was trained on the very first CD player, the CDP-101, when CD’s hit the market, as well as the Beta video products, including Betamovie, and the first Beta HI-FI machines, followed by the 8 mm products, all of which I suspect that you have worked on. We might even know each other.

    Restored a D5M I got off auction a few months ago, and boy, is it a beast. Recording and playback from this thing sounds amazing, was worth the trouble fixing. Seriously wonder why people mess around with things when they haven't got the slightest clue of what their doing. Btw you can get new rubber for this easily. I got a full kit of new rubber which 100% improved the wow and flutter, just be prepared to spend an hour scraping hardened rubber off the idle tyre since its bonded really well to the metal from the factory.

      @@florianm3170 @florianm3170 yep same from ali. Came in a dodgy zip lock bag that has D5M written on it with a sharpie. Surprisingly, the kit fits and works perfectly. Just get ready to spend alot of time removing the rubber off the main idle tyre, use a sharp knife to cut off as much rubber as you can then use fine grit sandpaper to get the rest of the residue

    • @florianm3170
      @florianm3170 Před 6 měsíci +1

      @@Infinite_OuroborosThanks, I got that kit as a precaution, at the moment all of my decks still work, but it's good to know that the kit works. I had one deck which had an enormous amount of battery acid damage, the stabilizer board was completely eaten away and i had to re-build each connection from scratch.
      So if you see any white stains on the outer casing next to the battery box beware.
      I get a lot of belts, idler rubbers and pinch rollers from aliexpress directly instead of buying a "belt kit" from e-bay, essentially the exact same things are sold 5x dearer.

    • @Infinite_Ouroboros
      @Infinite_Ouroboros Před 6 měsíci +1

      @florianm3170 Awesome. Just be aware that some walkmans are much more sensitive and need quality belts to run without wow and flutter. I also bought a bunch of assorted belts from ali but noticed they cause alot of warble on smaller walkmans like the wm677 or ex series, it was due to the belts being cut improperly and being thicker on one side. They're good to have for testing repairs, but I would always recommend buying the quality belts from "fix your audio".

    I find the DAT videos entertaining. I’ve never had a DAT recorder. So I find the technology interesting.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  Před 6 měsíci +2

      DAT were cool the way they worked but because they used a spinning head drum they suffered all the same problems as VCRs. Tape wear, head wear, alignment, condensation causing eaten tapes. Bring a tape in from the cold and not allow enough time for it to warm up (and dry) and you end up with a pile of tape inside. So for portable or mobile use they were a disaster waiting to happen. They were the best recording medium available and they found their way into professional applications in far greater numbers than consumer. Radio and TV stations used, as well as the recording industry untill flash based and hard drive based recording replaced it. I have a few DAT recorders and a bunch of tapes I recorded years ago. I use the format now more for transferring old tapes to CD or digital.
      One machine I really do like is my Tascam CD recorder. It records direct to CDR or CDRW (I usually use RW and then once I am happy copy that disk to a CDR)
      All the benefits in terms of sound as DAT, but no tape to break or wear out. The one I have does not require those expensive audio formatted disks, and I can load a CD loaded with MP3 and it plays them perfectly with batter sound that most DVD players that play MP3 do.

      My daily driver phone is a 2015 Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge with the original battery. It is weak, I have to use the most energy saving mode, and even then it lasts only 1.5 days in standby or about 40 minutes talk time. I plan to replace the battery in it, but it is not puffed up yet. I don't want to wait until it puffs up, because it can break the display. The OLED display is also horribly burnt, but it doesn't bother me too much.
      I am the third owner of the phone, inherited it 1.5 years ago. The first owner watched (listened) so much CZcams on it that the YT app has burnt into the screen heavily, even the title of her most viewed playlist is legible 😂 . I would replace the screen but it costs more than the value of the phone, so I won't. Maybe if I can find a cheap/free one with a dead mobo but good screen. I really like this phone, amazing that it's still not unusably slow despite being 9 years old, and the battery is also still somewhat usable after 8+ years of daily use.

Traverse scanning (2" quad VTR) is even more complex. I get a good laugh when people say they like the old VCRs that loaded and unloaded every time you press play or stop and rewind the tape unloaded. These ones had far higher failure rates and damaged tapes like they were going out of style. every time you hit play or stop and that tape had to load or unload there was a chance that it would get creased. This is where beta reigned supreme (and 8mm for that matter) as the tape was kept threaded. VHS eventually caught on and did the same. Greatest chance of tape damage is threading and unthreading.
