Born in Almaty, the Kazakh ballerina was one of the most feted of her era. On retiring from the stage, she directed the Vaganova Academy for over a decade before being invited back to her homeland to direct the ballet company at the magnificent new Astana Opera House. She has just staged a new production of Swan Lake, which embraces all the traditional Petipa/Ivanov roots but has spectacular new sets incorporating video. She speaks about her determination to dance and her passion for coaching young dancers.

Why didn't she talk about the time she was director of the Vaganova Academy? She was way better than tsiskaridze, I think.

No she wasn’t When she was director academy became worse thats why she was removed. All vaganova teachers love tsiskaridze for being that good director

@@gretapetenberg2525 Maybe you don't know but nobody at Vaganova academy wanted Tsiskaridze as director. Tsiskaridze comes from Bolshoi, Asylmuratova was not only a great, great, great ballerina, she is a genuine heir of the Mariinsky theater and the St. Petersburg style, no one better than her as a director. Everyone loved her and no teacher wanted her removed from the direction. Tsiskaridze is there for political reasons, not for talent. Everybody knows that. Ask the teachers what they think of him.

@@gretapetenberg2525This is what the teachers wrote to the culture ministry back then in november 2013 " Their departure disrupts the continuity of the school's traditions and represents an inadmissible, not to say criminal, decision," which has essentially paralyzed the institution and injured both the academy's reputation and Russian culture as a whole, the cultural figures said. The teachers at Vaganova academy have not other option than keep working knowing he has not the right to be there.
