In this video we take a look at an important CGI concept: detail layering. The concept is especially important when building high quality visual effects, such as the spark portal effect from Marvel's Doctor Strange.
First, we build a simple landscape to see how detail layering works, then we put together an exciting portal effect. Please note: this is a high level overview, not a step-by-step tutorial.

Since it gets asked a lot: the software I used is called Houdini
Who already know how vfx works they know the software name and people asking for software they can’t even imagine How hard Houdini is for beginners..
Damn, you just blindly wrote price for the project files.
Houdini ❤️

is it possible in blender?
Great balance of education and entertainment. I really enjoyed seeing how the entire process came together until it looked extremely life like.
I appreciate that a lot, thank you - my goal was to make something that many people could enjoy instead of a dry and overly technical video. My focus is on the concepts and the overall process, not on the specific buttons I press inside an application.
@@Digipiction how long did it take you to be this skilled? im trying to do these sort of things but i gave up
@@Digipiction iv been looking for someone who might be able to help me. I'm working on an ambitious spiderman fan film. And I'm looking for someone like you who could pull off some convincing cgi shots. Any chance you'd be intrested? Of course I'd pay you.
Love that you continue to compare with "rookie" version throughout the video, and without intentionally making the rookie version bad. A lot of content creators would have made the rookie version intentionally bad to make the final result look better, but instead you made the rookie version simple and straightforward, how a beginner would actually create the effect.
It's a small detail but it made the video feel much more honest about how effective the "magic 3" rule is.
It takes whole team to make one portal scene, and this man did it alone. You should definitely go and get a job for Marvel CGI Editor!
Oh I've made CZcams my new home, I prefer to stay here!
@@Digipiction i was about to say... better not do 𝓽𝓱𝓪𝓽.
@@daycred why?
@@konotorivfx6071 Well besides the point that I think he is just saying he likes that he is here on youtube teaching and when something like this is a fulltime job it takes a lot out of you; I work for an advertising agency as a lead product animator and can honestly say the amount of red tape we have just for commercials, which is not at the level of red tape of feature films, it can be very difficult to show behind the scenes or do educational videos. I was never barred from teaching but I cannot cover techniques unique to the application of anything done in any of our projects without both our agencies and the clients written and signed permission for each case. That means there are a lot of things offlimits simply by association
@@konotorivfx6071 its just pretty obvious that VFX companies are even better at sucking out every drop of passion someone has for VFX than banks are at sucking out all you have for programming. I can not imagine working on one mini shot for 3 months straight with barely any pay or credit in return is gratifying.
I actually loved this, the "magic three" rule is something Imma use a lot. That's what I love about tutorials like this; it works for EVERYTHING, not just a doctor strange portal effect. Also it cuts all the fat and leaves just what you need. It's a great tutorial.
i missed it, what was the magic three?
@@raccoon5238 smoke first then drink and smoke again
If works for every type of art too! It's just a great rule. I see it most in comedy. Or even plot. Telling the joke 3 times with 3 as the maximum before it gets old. It is the same with film. You can have 3 "references" to an event in a plot before it gets old. 3 surprises. 3 is always the best

Hey. I'm in the 3D game for a year now and this was one of the most important tutorials I've been watching!
It's not about doing insane portals like this, its about to UNDERSTAND what you have to do to get to the next levels.
Huge thank you for my new favorite rule!!
It's amazing how much effort and randomness we must imbed into our creations in order to make them look natural. You're knocking on a door of great potential, don't stop pushing this theory, you've demonstrated it absolutely beautifully.
Although I have nothing to do with CGI, I watched trough the whole thing, because it was so interesting. Keep going with your videos!
This is great! Awesome work bro!
Dang, really well done! You've earned my sub, please keep making more VFX breakdowns like this!
Yes, more along these lines is coming. Thank you for the support!
Lovely format and impressive results! (would be also nice to have some render times info in the description)
It reminded me those trapcode particular/form days, playing around with after effect settings.
Keep it up!
Thank you, the render times were a bit longer than I had hoped. The entire sequence is about 15 seconds and took a few hours to render on three RTX 3060s. I'll look up the exact times tomorrow and add them into the description.
Wow, you are a great teacher! So detailed and you break it down!
Thank you, that's good to hear. I hope to strike a balance between giving interesting information and not getting too deeply into the very technical (boring) aspects!
@@Digipiction I believe a good example of that is Ian Hubert, packed with info but not a 'real' tutorial per say(although he does those too), just enough for those who are already accustomed with 3d to follow along and test it either on the same software or transfer it to their favorite ones.
Dude, the effort you put into this! Thank you so much!! You‘ve just gained a new subscriber ^^
This is just amazing, i see how u love what you do and the effort behind it. A new sub here
One of the Best cgi i've ever seen, amazing job!! Looks so realistic.
Even in houdini, we VFX artists can't escape donut tutorials
This man deserves more subscriber dude, very informative and entertaining at the same time
Wow, this is one of the best fundamental art creation techniques I've ever heard. Thank you sir.
Thank you for giving this for free. You are awesome.
Great video! Keep this up and I can easily imagine you hitting upwards of 100k subscribers. This is great content, and you're not boring to listen to, which is what a lot of youtubers end up feeling like.
Brilliant!! Thanks for sharing
I've been using noises for quite some time but thanks to this vid I can design my stuff based on a solid knowledge, not just a mere hunch.
This video was very eye-opening and enjoyable to watch! :)
Noises are great, they can look very realistic when combined! Thank you :-)
i love seeing videos like this, good work!
fading gravity as it gets further from the floor, thats such a great detail I'd have never thought of!
Came here from yt recommendations, i was surprised you only have 500 subscribers! You deserve so much more, I don't even do CG but you explain these concepts so well
Thanks so much! I was hoping it would be interesting to those outside of the CGI world too. Great to hear :-)
subs escalating quickly
The cheery on the cake is how the sparks contact the floor. It looks so realistic.
fun presentation style, and good general advice on layering noise / variations 👍
That looks amazing!
Awesome breakdown! Informative and nice humor
The detail is astonishing. I might start learning CGI so this video taught me a lot.
That looks so good. This tut is priceless
Dude this is was such a fantastic breakdown- definitely gunna download the project and poke around! Thanks for sharing your insights!
Subscribed. Absolutely love the hard work. You did a fantastic job!!!
that was insane. bravo.
That was awesome! Keep up the good work, I’m liking this channel!
It was also a lot of fun to create, both the effect itself and the video. Thank you!
omg it looks so freaking good. thanks to this video i was able to do a decent portal in blender, but yours is next level
Cool skills, end product and narration in a short truthful video. Thumbs up.
This is so cool!!! thanks for sharing this amazing video and your cgi!
Now that's a video with a lot of value. Thanks
i learn a lot just from this video, hope you make more video of this series. love it
I'm randomly fell here and I loved it. Thank you algorithms.
Very satisfying result, well done!
Just found out about this video right now, I'm glad to hear that those concepts are the same I applied when I recreated my own Dr Strange portal, although I think I missed some of the layered turbulent forces, I like how some of the particles keep floating around far away from the circle here
Please make more tutorials.
There's a reason this video is popping off, it's great.
This video was dope and easy to follow thru. I can see why CGI artists take their time, so much tweaking!
thats really cool to see how it was done. Would love to see other elements from different movies and how it's done!

Awesome portal man, amazing work 👍
This is the most perfect vfx i have seen in youtube
Wow! It is so realistic!

Man this is fire keep making video like this
Your presentation is top-notch! Subbed!
Extremely cool content, those videos about method are so valuable
That looks amazing. Me and my friends are building a really nice PC and this is one thing i want to learn and get the most out of the computer. From DCS World, 3D modeling to CGI. I need to show these videos to my son bc he is very creative and would be blown away seeing what he can do. Thanks for making this video
Very well done video! I can tell you are gonna succeed on this platform. This is the best dr strange portal tutorial i've seen!
That was super fantastic!!!
I have to say that I took those Marvel movies for granted, the amount of effort put behind a single portal shows the level of details to make a great movie. It is truly marvelous.
more of this please!!! I'm applying what i've learned on archvis and it turned out great!!!
Great video, thanks for posting!
Great work!
Very important video. Thank you!

The Donut got me. Well done! xD
The donut part caught me so off guard I had to burst out laughing
Just watched a couple of videos yesterday on doing the portal using Davinci Resolve. Now I can see those looked good but were only a starting point. Thanks
This was very informative
Your work in this video is amazing

Woww my man is really good at this. This looks awesome and the details are amazing 🙌
im not usually interested in these stuff, but damn this is amazing

I don't do 3d graphics... Heck, I don't even draw stick figures on my notebook, but you just convinced me to like and suscribe. Good job!
Excellent video!
Wow, amazing.
Please do more tutorials. This is great.
Wow. man. I've been looking at several VFX guys on CZcams. All convincing. But you are on a completely different level. I really feel like I can trust you to understand the difference between work that is well done and garbage, which is not a given these days. Thank you for this and I'm looking forward ro watching everything on your channel and future videos.
It was really helpful and the doughnut :D
Wow, feel like you applied the magic three to your video production/direction as well. Good job!
Haha thank you! I'm not terribly experienced with editing yet but am happy with this video for sure :-)

This one is the perfect portal that I saw on internet
This is awesome, keep on with this work! There aren't enough of these houdini videos, sharing this knowledge will help people who are interested in becoming a vfx artist. Even sharing the project file is incredible! (currently, it still says coming soon?)
Sorry for the delay, I'll upload it later this week!
@@Digipiction awesome, thank you!
I wished i had found this video sooner. You are a really great cgi maker, you should be hired by companies that make movies.
This looks so real ngl
Also, I knew you didn’t go into detail on how to create the window like effect, added to the portal but I really love this tutorial
