This is beautiful in it's brevity. I enjoy a story that leaves me with more questions, much as a sample of food given in a grocery store tastes much better than any other mouthful in the entire package.being peddled. It also reminds me to a small degree of the story by Clive Barker "The Midnight Meat Train" in his Books of Blood--a short story also made into a gory yet decent movie.

You're right. It does have a hint of Midnight Meat Train in it...

I see some comments about this not being "Lovecraft", which I take to mean, not Lovecraftian. No, it isn't based on one of his stories, save tangentially, but it is very much informed by his work and the sorts of ramifications he encouraged others to follow up, were they so inclined. If you look into the history of Lovecraftian fiction, you'll find thousands of such examples. I don't know how familiar those making such comments are with this burgeoning field (and it is indeed an immense one these days, as opposed to what it was when I first discovered his work nearly fifty years ago), but the Derlethian idea of the "Cthulhu Mythos", with its rather strictured format, has long become only a very small portion of work that is Lovecraftian. More and more such work is informed by knowledge of the man, his stories, his philosophy, his essays and letters and poetry... combined with the current writers' own Weltanschauung. This is EXACTLY what Lovecraft promoted when someone wanted to work with his material in any fashion -- for them to take it in their own direction and be true to their own Muse, using it more as a touchstone than a model. I think that is very much what has been done here, and I think it is a job well done indeed.

I feel like the whole "murdering people to keep them at bay" is a cop-out and it honestly doesn't capture lovecraftian horror the way it was meant to be.

You did an awesome job. I'm glad like so much within the lovecraft's horror you kept the horror lurking in the background not quite manifesting itself.

This is honestly really good. I would however say the deep ones wanted to breed so him kidnapping a live woman is more consistent but I still enjoyed this.
