- Back in April, RetroManCave held a charity auction for these IBM NetVista PCs he'd restored. Wanting to support the cause, I bid on one of them -- and won! So let's check out the IBM NetVista Type 6792 from 2001, running a 1.6GHz Pentium 4 CPU and 16MB Nvidia Vanta graphics.

It must've went through eBay's Global Shipping Program...
I noticed it was sent via TNT - they're one of the couriers my workplace deals with, and maaaan they do not give two shits
Another fine delivery from the UPS Express Canon.
Didn't you know? You have to practice reverse psychology with shi**ing compan(s)ies.
Neil is a legend for setting up those LGR sound effects
man he worked hard on all of these
So which Windows action was set to play the legendary "Practice Moooode" sample from Extreme Rockclimbing?
The guitar riff gave me massive nostalgia as it was a snippet from Hot Wheels Stunt Track Challenge 2.
The part in the IBM PS/2 Model 25 video where LGR says "Alright let's use this motherfucker" is too inappropriate, even if bleeped out.
Roblox and Minecraft Fan 2019 I agree, it’s a fuckin’ cunt of a thing to say; best leave the swearing for the basterdin’ comments section

I was a graphic designer at IBM at that time. They provided me with an “Intellistation” of the same vintage, I had some screaming graphics cards in it, tons of ram, and the IT dept. later replaced the main chip every time there was a budget, before finally decommissioning the machine. No Ethernet at IBM then, it had Token RIng card, and kept designs on Iomega Zip disks per corporate compliance, but that later changed to a windows network drive. Lotus Notes, Lotus 123, Illustrator and Photoshop were my daily routine. All IBM machines of this vintage are tanks. We used to have them render videos for days with no crashes. Good times.
IBM machines in general --are-- used to be tanks. There is a reason why machines like ThinkPads have a reputation to be reliable.
The IBM NetVista series was GARBAGE regardless of what was under the hood. The hard drive bracket liked to poke holes in the ribbon cables unless you folded it just right, and they just generally had poor build quality all around. I had to support a school network with over 200 of these machines spread over 3 campuses. I lost track of how many I dumpstered after stripping them of usable parts. They were junk when new and, by the time I inherited them, were on their last legs.
@@HappyBeezerStudios They went downhill FAST when Lenovo bought them. The biggest problem was they kept using the same chassis and cooling systems, long after they became completely insufficient for the chips of the day. And while their competitors grew sleeker, they remained clunky with ergonomics rooted in the 90's. After they started rolling out new form factors, things got somewhat better, but Lenovos have a reputation in the IT industry for quirkiness and weird firmware bugs, and horrible customer support. I personally won't buy one; seen way too many problems with them.
I had an intellistation in 2004-2005. dual 850 mhz xeons.
@@ShowMeStateElevators there are several on eBay right now! 20 bucks for what looks like nos for pci.
The purple parallel port hits my nostalgia bone everytime.
USB ruined all that fun. Multicolour ports.
@@6581punk Do you remember the green / purple mouse and keyboard PS2 ports?

'Neil you're such a dork' - wow, when LGR calls you a dork you know you've made it.
"bombastic fiddle faddle" lol. David is gonna bomb your fiddle faddle!
Considering the shape of the box, when you picked up the case and heard rattling, I had nightmarish visions of an expansion card coming loose during shipping and shooting around inside the case, completely obliterating the board, capacitors, and all of RMC's hard work... glad to see that didn't happen!
That was my fear as well. Thank crap it was only a fan!
I had that happen with a PCJr that was shipped to me except the floppy drive cage came unclipped from the bottom of the case and was bouncing around the entire unit when in shipping.
7:38 "You have se-lec-ted LGR as the computer's default voooiiiice..."
I'm a nurse who works for the NHS so I want to say, thanks for supporting us and our system through the charity auction. We all work hard across the country to keep people safe and healthy and your kindness is appreciated. Love watching your videos and keep up the good work!
Thank you Daniel for all you do in our NHS with all your colleagues across the uk. Real heros.
As a Brit, there's nothing that makes me feel more patriotic and downright proud of my country than the NHS
Thank you for all the hard work you and everyone else in our fantastic health service does!
Thanks for doing what you do :)
Sad that it's come to treating the NHS as charity rather than funding properly.
David Barton . The charity stuff is usually for extras outside day to day medical care. My Mother was a volunteer helper at Bristol Children's Hospital. A lot of the time she was looking after sick children's siblings while a parent visited. You wouldn't expect the NHS to fund that, but it was a great help to the parents.
When it made that weird noise when starting Unreal Tournament, it reawakened my ancient fear of my computer making weird, nightmarish noises that I haven't felt since Win98. *shutters*
I kinda want a WAV of this now.
*shudders

Dear Clint, Love to see your video's on older computers, i've had a light stroke in 2014 and since then I cannot work that much on computers like I used to, all the older computers I worked on are in your video's so I'm enjoying to watch you work on them, brings back sweet memories ! Thanks very much !!
24:07 LMAO. That takes me back to 2000 where my friend tried to play Unreal Tournament on his pathetic Cyrix 133, the weirdest sound ever and then reboot.
Man, nobody deserved a Cyrix chip. You just wish your parents had bought a Pentium.
that PR equivalent speed rating sure brainwashed a lot of desperate folks back then [including me]
@@lemagreengreen The Cx486 was a great chip, and the FastMath ran better than Intel's 487 coprocessors.
i dont understand what happened. did the game just crash? or did windows have a major error? lol
Cyrix was decent, although it was WAY before 2000.
The sound that played when you ran Unreal Tournament (And crashed the machine) for the first time was Sensura (Like Aureal 3D and EAX) 3D stereo sound being used by that Soundmax intergrated sound chip. I used to own a Hercules Muse XL 4.0 PCI soundcard which on games that supported A3D and Sensura would boot with that sound.
Ahh mystery solved! So it was definitely a result of the drivers I installed.
was this like an actual sound that should sound like that, or was it a different sound that was being mangled by the integrated sound chip?
@@colinstu I don't remember much about my early PCs, but that sound was pretty familiar to me, so I don't think it was being mangled or anything.
Was the sound the equivalent of that booming EAX intro that played at Windows startup with an SB Live?
That sound is indeed from Sensaura's 3D Positional Audio splash screen. I extracted the sound and logo from A3D.DLL using 7-Zip, here you go s000.tinyupload.com/?file_id=05987319581694458069
That wavetable was made to produce a perfect rendition of the Seinfeld theme song.
That weird sound when the system crashed was the stuff of nightmares 😂 imagine that happening at 2 am. The fact that it ended on a major chord only made it more unsettling ...
Back in that huge power outage in north america in 2003, I had unreal editor open while working on a map, and it crashed while trying to build my level lighting and then my screen went black. Felt like I crashed the entire world in those first 15 minutes
@@MozTS did you get to finally release the map?
24:07 Geez, that's almost creepypasta tier stuff right there!
RMC-- those Clint sound clips were just perfection. 👌
PXE is for the Ethernet boot
Yeah, boot order was configured to use the Ethernet adapter first, then the HDD.
Darnit. Really wanted to contribute, "I know things!" but 455 comments to late...
Does this indicate he did a network install for theese computers?
Or is it just the default bios setting?
@@tossabaddle Depends on the system. Ordinarily, PXE is at the very end of the boot order. It's often a good indicator of a hard drive failure. You can use it to do a network install. I have personally never done it myself.
@@tossabaddle these machines were for business use, as they use the network to deploy windows images it makes sense that the default boot order has pxe first
Ah, the good ol' days of PXE boot for easy domain deployment.
“Running through a bag of chips,” it’s one of those lines you can actually hear and totally relatable with sound card testing.
Well this is a walk down memory lane for me. In 2006, I worked at an IBM spinoff and our lab was filled with these things. I was the System Administrator so I had to touch all of them in some way or another. Seeing this video brought back so many memories. Especially memories of my take the kids to work day. My sons were adorable and they were hauling around these things that were almost as big as they were at the time. Thanks, Clint. you made me feel real good today. I've always loved your channel. Thank you for all the amazing content.
That synth sound like scrubbing a window really hard with a cloth.
I nearly spit out my coffee. I read this as it was playing on the video. Great comment sir

Because of retro channels like this I have been going to ebay and trying to acquire all of my favorite gadgets and gizmos from my childhood. My childhood is a bit more recent that most of the stuff featured on retro channels but having those items feels really nice, especially these days.
Best to do it before they get really expensive after people start making videos about them
I completely understand. I imagine many people are trying to escape to their childhood of the 80s, 90s and early 2000s when everything felt more positive and wondrous.

I used to go to a college in Wiltshire (was pretty much one of the few school experiences I had which was positive XP), so nice to see some funds heading to a charity there, you're a good man :D
Oh man, this brings back a few memories from school, when they used to have a dozen or so of these in the library.
I assume thats you in The pfp. Also first reply
Same for me. These were in my school district for so long! These and the black box successor.
I think we had these brand new in our lab when I was in high school. They updated them to XP shortly before I graduated, and 6 years later they were still using them when my younger brother started high school, except in classrooms instead of the labs.
My school had G3 blueberries :/
The excitement over at RMC when it was discovered that CZcams royalty had won an auction..... it's great to see it come full circle and the resulting video from the auction of the subjects of a video. Thank you LGR, for a great vid and for supporting the NHS.

Good job LGR supporting our NHS and love this PC had one of these with a matching 17in trinatron crt monitor.
I always loved the designs of these modern (okay, modern 20 years ago) IBM desktops. Clean, straight-edged, and classy.
Ah, this friday was blessed by half an hour of bliss.
The sound effects thing reminds me of when I made my custom Windows sound clips with my own voice. It actually annoyed the living hell out of my sisters whenever they'd ask me to borrow my laptop, lol.
It reminds me of when I changed my laptop's startup sound to Psychosocial by Slipknot when I was 12.
Just watching you tinker around with these is just so much fun to watch!
“we should now have midi files to play with, really we only need one” ... and it was not CANYON.MID!?
It was PASSPORT.MID, which was the CANYON.MID of the 32-bit era. I don't believe CANYON actually shipped with Windows 9x releases, only Windows 3.x ones.
@@bitwize But it did ship with 9x (except Windows ME, which has other MIDI files).

The best build in the game does not take too long to learn. By going through the steps listed in this guide, you will be able to take the next steps in your build. You will be able to create the following build which will take anywhere from a half hour to 45 minutes of practice.
You can use any style of build that provides more variety in play. There are many other styles of build, but these will come into being when you get older. Your first style will be to play the game on your smartphone. This starts with your phone. In this step you need to pick the easiest mobile device you have to develop the game. You will probably start with a laptop or tablet.
This will be similar to in the following sections, the most important thing you will want to do. This is going to be your phone, not your iPad. You may have to install Flash on your phone either of your most recent devices. You will need your iPod and your other iPod touch.
This is how you build an iPhone.
Step 1 - Setup the iPhone
Before you start building the iPhone, you will need to set up your device or your phone. When building your iPhone, you will need:
A Bluetooth enabled
Isn't the NHS already unsustainably bloated with public funds?

Hi Clint, I'm a long term watcher, and love your stuff. I wanted to let you know that I work for a Data Processing site in Plymouth UK, for the national mail carrier. We used those NetVista machines for several years before our I.T. company was forced to upgrade our systems. It turned out that for the last two years we were using NetVista computers, the I.T. company had to source parts on the internet second hand whenever they broke. We ended up getting Lenovo machines as replacements running Windows 7. Our Data Processing site uses about 150 computers, and every one of the was NetVista's for about five years.
This is so cool! Great that you support eachother.

And sometimes the urge to test them all overcomes me.
That is the moment when I want to test 6 CPUs, stock and with 2-3 OC settings in about 40 games, programs and benchmarks.
Yes, that takes about a week of pure testing. And I mean only the testing, not dialing in the oc or stuff like sleeping or eating.
