What a way to start the new year! We’ve got the all-new BMW i4 M50 going head-to-head with one of the best performance EVs around - the Tesla Model 3 Performance!
So let’s take a look at their stats. Starting with the BMW, it’s powered by dual electric motors that put down 544hp and 795Nm of torque. It’s pretty heavy though, tipping the scales at 2,215kg.
Now the Tesla may also have dual electric motors, but it’s quite down on power compared to the i4, producing 490hp & 660Nm! It’s got one big advantage though… It’s over 350kg lighter than the BMW!
So, which do you think will snatch the win? There’s only one way to find out… LET’S RACE!

As a German, I will always enjoy Mat’s German accent. Happy new year everyone!
That's good to hear. I always used to think Germans were offended when he did that.

Ich finde es auch immer lustig zu sehen wenn irgendein nicht Muttersprachler deutsch spricht
Its races like these that make Carwow so good. Nobody really knows the outcome of a unique matchup like this and were all impressed nonetheless
Unique indeed. Let's cripple a model 3 performance with more drag on : front bumper, spoiler, diffuser, side skirts, side mirrors and less optimal rimms. Then state this represents the performance of the Model 3 performance towards its 2 years newer direct comparison and state that the BMW is faster. While knowing every M3P does a 11.8 seconds quarter mile.... This is rubbish.
The only reason why this optical 'tuned' car is used is because of AMT getting some exposure (which they had to pay for no doubt). This is not journalism (it's entertainment) and some viewers will now wrongly think they will beat any model 3 (including the P) if they buy this BMW 🤣
@@Maarten_vd sump
@@Maarten_vd I’m kinda curious to how much all that drag effects the teslas top end cause it seems like that’s where the BMW preforms better despite being 400Kg heavier. On top of that if they end up making an i4m I would want to see how that matches up to a model 3p and maybe even the model S

@@theeternalnightmare2630 probably wait to get a tesla, or go with a different EV. tesla honsetly worries me a lot, especially after having removes parking sensors from their latest cars and substituting them with a camera-based solution, which doesn't even appear to be capable of detecting depth since it uses one camera. removing vital features like that is absolutely crazy, kinda wish i had gotten the ioniq 6, even if my M3P is a ton of fun.
@Yvon Q. not sure if i'd consider them overpriced, especially since i really dont factor in the self-driving packages into price or value. i think the model 3 is pretty competitive in price, espeically when compared to the base and long-range models, but i'd rather go with a more reputable car maker instead of one that will remove basic features and replace them with much worse solutions.

I still remember that factory specs Model 3 performance completed 1/4 mile in 11.7s in previous carwow drag races. I am not sure that this 12s score was caused by the environment or the modification, so it is hard to say that i4 can beat tesla in drag race. Anyway, I think the weight difference can definitely show the gap between the two makers.
Totally agree. So the show is just a show. They can actually setup whatever result they want. Even Carwow themselves drove Model 3 Performance for 11.7s with 1/4 mile in their own previous test. Now it became 12s in this race. Well….

Wow that bodykit ruins the performance! P3D Usually pulls a 11.7/8

@@Wh04m1 unlikely - seems like they keep performance very well.
Cold weather
11.5 under best circumstances but here went something wrong, of course the drag from the bodykit and the wider tyres. Stock M3P would eat that bimmer.
The Tesla 3 long range (non performance) does 12.0. Boost acceleration option gets 11.7/8. Perf model is 11.5. You'll need at least 80% charge and at least 70 F outside.
I love the fact that braking was done at 100mph (instead of 70!), but it's a bit of flaw since you need less than 0.1s difference in the reaction time for that type of distance. You should measure the braking distance electronically (not just white line on the ground). Do it 3 times at different Locations on the track to account for variations on the GPS as well. BMW has the sport brakes, but yeah 400kg is 5 people man! Lol thanks Matt!!!!

As a Tesla S owner and an ex-BMW owner, I found that the BMW certainly has better car body built. I can clearly hear my husband’s phone conversations inside the Teslas while I stand outside of the car with everything closed. And I have to turn down the music’s volume when I drive on city’s road. I never had acoustical problems when I drove my my old BMW. I’m already on the waitlist of the i4.
BMWs are nice when new, but get a lot crappier as they get older. Repairs are ridiculously expensive and common. As they say, if you can't afford a new BMW, you definitely can't afford a used BMW. Teslas go forever.
Tesla is not much better. We’ve got the Tesla for 4 years already and we had to send it to fix no less than 10 times already and it’s at least $2000 (problems with head light, computer shut down when driving, HVAC, etc). Glad that we’ve got extended warranty. I finally got my i4 8 months ago and still no problem yet but we’ve got extended warranty also (7 years total)…just in case. My husband is driving the Tesla and I’m driving the i4 now but my husband said he enjoys to drive my i4 more because it’s better handling and feels more driving a real car. Also the chairs are more comfy.

@@wpb1395 you know why the 3 & Y is everywhere? Because they keep doing price reduction and plus the additional tax credit from government. You actually can get a 3 for under 50K after tax credit. We own both so just to express our honest experience with both. This is all about personal preference tho. Why are you being so offensive?
@@phoebetsau9635 Not being offensive. I just think the German cars are junk. Other car manufacturers know they have to go electric but they are losing hand over fist in the conversion. They need to start putting in a subwoofers to get that acoustic feel from the quiet motors.
Or alternatively if you like absolute quiet in your car, they could employ BOSE noise cancellation and mitigate road and wind noise altogether so the only sounds in your car come from your infotainment system or the sound of you chomping through a greggs sausage roll on the M40
@@TheComputec the technology is there for good noise cancelling but i thing it will make you feel very strange, something as akin to a "sensory deprivation tank" it will be surely not for the "faint of hearth" :)
my screaming v8 does a fantastic job at noise cancellation.
@@dark1tdr Oh I totally agree that "complete silence" is horrible. I have spent time in high security government data centres with walls specifically designed to absorb all sounds and it was very jarring. So much so that we were encouraged to only spend limited amounts of time in the room without a break, but sound cancellation technology could be implemented to remove all "UNWELCOME" noise like tyre rumble and wind noise and complimentary technology utilised to enhance driver notifications for useful stimulus like tyre squeal (when the tyres are operating at their limit) etc. The system could also translate the sound of emergency vehicles approaching from front or rear and convert that to a warning sound AND more importantly a visual indicator for when it is dark, raining and you have your sound system cranked up. How many times have we seen oblivious drivers obstructing a fire engine or Ambulance because they simply hadn't noticed them for various reasons.
I only want distractions that are important and useful. I'm sure there is some middle ground and with a little R&D i'm sure it would be possible to soundproof a car more effectively with technology than by just stuffing 150KG of wadding into the voids and the bulkheads

I thought Carwow tested the M3P through and through and it always do 11.8s? But for this test only, it has to be 12.0s.. Hmm..
Wow, who would have thought that on a different day with different tarmac different temperatures in a different car, the 1/4 mile could be 0.2 seconds different !! INCREDIBLE !!!!!!!!
@@DjNikGnashers
0.2s is actually a pretty big difference. The Model 3 is very consistent; I wouldn't chalk this up to different conditions. More likely the bodykit and changed tires/wheels is making the car slower.
@@a.banana LOL 0.2 seconds is NOTHING, how long have you been driving ?
I'm 52 mate, and have been driving since I was 17, and owned many performance cars.
0.5 seconds is nothing, over a 1/4 mile, you can lose that by simply spinning a wheel by 10% more than you need to over the first metre (science states 15% wheel slip is optimum for launching).
There are probably over a dozen different things which have made the 0.2 second difference from driver reaction to temperature to weather to tarmac quality to the tyre condition, etc etc etc.
Do you even drive a car bro ?
@@DjNikGnashers You sound childish
@@DjNikGnashers
For a car like the Model 3, a difference of 0.2s is pretty large. Usually that kind of variance is seen when Model 3 have different tire/wheel setups. The larger rim sizes tend to hurt the quarter mile times slightly, as well as grippier tires (the traction control doesn't adjust itself to take advantage of the extra grip). In this case, not only does this car have custom rims and tires, it also has a bodykit very likely adding unnecessary drag. I'd say it's more likely that the modifications made it slower.
Thanks for doing this matchup. That BMW looks awesome.
That model 3 has full body kit mods for more aero. What did you do to the BMW again?
@carwow The bodykit and custom wheels are a big penalty. I also got non-standard wheels (19") on my Model 3 Performance, and at higher speeds the aero penalty is quite big! I've lost up to 5% of the top speed (live near Germany) and max out at 247kmh on average (should do 261). Perhaps in the quarter mile this makes a difference 😀

That's hard to believe. What reason would they have for not unlocking the powerband? The Long Range and Plaid S are so much faster now that they run basically no risk of cannibalizing sales.
Haha.. you cant expect optimal runs every time...... conditions change. Only thing that is important is that the conditions are the same for both cars. As here.
@1:47 Matt's F1 car sound effect was genuinely impressive! 😂🤣😂
Was waiting for this drag race so longgggg :D finally!!! I'm glad I am getting a BMW i4 m50
The front bumper is my number one gripe about the Tesla model 3 but that one changes everything
were was the exhaust sound check ????? 😂
That V12 impression was surprisingly accurate
anychance you can travel to US and try the new Model S Plaid?
Way to start 2022 Matt
Wait a second Model 3 is the most consistent car I have ever seen it literally does 11.8s every time it even did 11.8s on a wet surface so why did it do a 12s in this race? Maybe because of the bodykit or the SoC or maybe even both
Because of the shitty bodykit
yeah it's definitely much slower than other model 3 performances i've seen (including mine). it shoul dbe 11.8 seconds or faster. My only guess is it's a pre 2021 model 3 performance or
had a lower state of charge >75% or less.
Headwind !
On carwow videos the new one does even 11.7s.
By the way, those are also quite bad times, as I managed to do 11.78s with a Boosted Long Range. The M3P can do 11.5s when you know what you are doing
Please dont compare times from different occasions! Should always be done under comparable conditions.
Happy new year to all my car wow peeps. Hoping for more splendid videos this year.
Electric is cleaner, yes, but I hope they can continue making ICEs and find an alternative cleaner fuel source and let people choose what car they want rather than 'forcing' us all to drive electric.
Well, without the pressure from EVs, and let's say it, Tesla, they'd still drag their feet. BMW had a glimmer genius with the i3, really interesting concept, but then continued dragging their feet. If they ever come up with a good petrol based gas replacement, they better do it in the next few years. Kudos to Tesla, Nissan, Chevy, Renault for pioneering, to the Koreans, Ford and VAG for the second wave.
7:50 how many miles are on the brakes? I had to brake them in for arround 300km, then they started to grip properly..
good content, good approach!
I’ve ordered me a i4, looking forward to it. This was exactly a video I wanted to see
But the video is not Acurate… tm3P does 11.6 sec, would never lose to the i4
@@MariaSilva-hq7fh not only that..the technology in the tesla is far superior
@@Ds-pw7gd No it's not. But the interior of the Tesla is far worse.
@@MariaSilva-hq7fh Yea, if you don't like it, call it a lie. Trump won, I get it.
@@AndreDargan forget to take your meds today? I have owned over five different bmw’s..have two bmw’s and Tesla model 3 performance in the driveway right now. I’m not brand loyal fanboy like you
That does seem a slow run for the Tesla. You usually run an 11.7 or 11.8.
Yup was thinking this just rewatching this video. And it’s consistently been that way. Which would have beaten the BMW then. Suspicious I am!
@@philipmccambridge7003 an m3 beats a model 3 performance any day anyways so
Nope that’s what they do
The Akrapovič exhaust on the BMW sounds amazing.
Some crazy post or digital camera flashing cloud stuff going on @5:28
hey Matt u need to give the ranges for these electrics in the specs
I can only imagine the engineers at BMW spent good money making sure it was programmed to be just a smidge faster than the Model 3..
The weight difference...
The power difference is quite obvious. But Tesla are the ones to beat, wouldn't have thought BMW would release a car that was slower than the biggest e-competitor.
But it is not. The M3P was in this show several times and always 11.8 seconds at the quarter mile. Don't know why this model is slower, could be because of the optical 'tuning' or low SOC?
@@Maarten_vd
Yes maybe this mods affect the quarter mile time but they shouldn’t affect the 0-100.
Just Tesla overestating their numbers as always and BMW underestimating as always
@Maarten van Soest I wouldn't be surprised if it is drag. They have changed the aerodynamics and that rear wing looks like it will add quite a bit of drag over the standard spoiler.
To quote Yianni, M3P is 11.8secs all day every day to the 1/4 mile.
Shouldn't have replaced the bumper of M3P, aerodynamic affects quite huge as the speed goes up.
Model 3 performance in this test was the refresh model?
Interestingly Mat has managed a 11.7 in a model 3 performance when he drag raced the 3 model 3 variants
Also in every other video with a model 3 performance they did 11.7 i just checked
Conditions vary. Also EVs are sensitive to state of charge and temps.
What we do know is the BMW is no slouch.
Different day, different surface, different air temp etc.
@@jannis-joelfehl4855 i think tesla had battery around 60% thats why
And like others have said, that body kit on the Tesla is not doing it any favours at high speed...
I honestly think it was due to the body kit. In previous videos even in damp conditions the Tesla has done like a 11.8 or a 11.7
Eh
Yeah. I am not sure about that body kit either. On the other hand we know the Model 3 stops delivering power as speed increases.
Even you did 11.7 in a Model 3P in a previous video in similar wether conditions. Most Model 3 P do the 1/4 in 11.6-11.8 s.
Funny thing is also that in the previous (setup) video, Matt did a 3.6 with the M3P and 4.2 with the M50 .. nowhere was that to seen or played a factor. Different cars ?!
