It's no exaggeration to say that were it not for Hank Shocklee, hip hop would probably sound entirely different. His early Bomb Squad production with Public Enemy didn't just break all the rules in rap music at the time... it rewrote them, forever changing the trajectory of the still-young cultural movement. To this day, Shocklee's production stands alone in its identifiable sound. We spoke with him recently to find out how he learned about Reason and what caused him to adopt it as his 'weapon of choice' for beat production.

What Hank did was manipulate sounds. He was doing it in Spectrum City. I would go those parties and had the chance to even participate in some of these parties with Spectrum City with my Dance group on Long Island called the Popa-Matics. So in 82-83 -84 I watch the uprising of what would be Public Enemy. Check was Chucky D. back then, and he would rap in between the parties when they wold their thing. It was so funky the grooves Hank and them would come up with. I met Eric Sadler and heard what he was doing production wise as well. So when he teamed with Hank to form the Bomb Squad it didn't surprise me. Because these guys were super focused.

My issue with Reason is you have to build everything absolutely from scratch, and it takes too long. I use the Reason Rack VST for some things in Maschine, but I don't think Reason itself stacks up to Maschine.

@Jeremy Ivy What do you mean when you say "you have to build everything absolutely from scratch."? Honest question, I know some people in comment sections take offense bc they think you're taking a shot at them.

Plenty of people make presets and combinators and templates. You don't have to build anything from scratch.
