- This video was cut down from the one hour unfaired recumbent bike and trike race held on Oct 8, 2011 in Springfield, OH. Mike Mowett came in first on his M1 recumbent , Ric the roadie was second, and I was third on my NoCom Recumbent by about a foot. MOvie was taken with a rear facing GoPro HD helmet-cam. Sorry, not HD. Stabilization by You-Tube.
The guys on the recumbent bikes look pretty relaxed
I luv the recumbent bikes. I hope to some day try one.
Next year strategy: draft behind the TT cycle and launch at the end.
That would produce a slower overall time for both of them.
Lol! Lying down cruising! Looks comfortable compared to a road bike.
Enjoyed watching this. I guess the roadie had to use every trick in the book to stay with the no-com. Moral victory for you, and an achievement for him? Either way, it's great to see an honest/open race between DF and bent - too many "look how I smoked the roadie" vids just show a bent overtaking a bunch of (perfectly content) recreational riders.
What's no-com?
@@brauljo the type ofnthe recumbent bike : Velokraft Nocom
2:24 dude was not even trying he was merely keeping up with you and had to get up for the turns on a very unstable time trial bike which sucks badly for turning. You are basically on the ground that guy should of been nowhere near you unless you backed off a bit. I do like the big dude on the recumbent aero bike!!! awesome video.
I am very impressed and even more so with that low racer who passes you on a regular basis ,,,, he is flying
The GoPro seems to make that noise overs bumps. I'm not sure if it's the mount or what, but I have heard the same noise on other gopro bike audio.
A highracer can draft behind DFs, but there's not much advantage the other way round. The low drag from the lowracer makes it pretty negligable for anyone except another lowracer, or tadpole trike. Drafting doesn't work unless you're in the wake of they guy ahead of you, which means neither up, down, to the side, or too far back. DFs have the most wake.
That was a heck of a roadie, keeping up with a lowracer. The tandems seemed slow. But, it's all about the riders.
One must also consider that the DF guy was drafting for a long time...
WOW! Its as if the very design of these bicycles is like a land rocket!
Alguém sabe me informar onde eu encontro os modelos da reclinada argentina hi bent para venda no Brasil?
Do you have any videos of superstock recumbent racing?
what speeds where being done here. looks like a recumbent is about in the same league as a time trial bike, assuming you both are same ability.
I'd say it was a little unsporting of Ric to stay in your slipstream the whole time.. Even if a recumbent has less draft than an upright, it's still very significant over an hour.. So you should at least take the moral victory on that one;). The M1 looked very impressive. But I've always wondered about recumbents; doesn't the effect of gravity on your outward stretched legs fatigue you a lot faster?
Not if you are using clip-in pedals
Love the recumbents, they are awesome until you gotta go over a curb in real life...
need to start your spirit from further out next time , maybe drop back so he can't see you winding up.
Just the extra weight from the video camera likely cost the recumbent a distance of a foot, as well as 2nd place.
You might be right. I was thinking about the highracers' drafting I sometimes give to upright riders.
Indeed, I have no experience with lowracers.
Both - Mike was in very good condition, and the lowracer recumbent is a faster bike than the upright.
Okay? The draft he can get off a low racer is negligable, especially compared to the drag from riding upright. His front tire is in the slip-stream, while the rest of his body is far above. No effect whatsoever.
Paráda!
How fast do you go?
How far? Average speed?
Upright abused the draft
What's all the clacking noise?
Did you know that 'Ric' was drafting you the whole race? (I'm assuming you have no mirrors during a race?) I'd have been tempted to slow and let him pass, or at least close the door on him coming to the finish line. Unsporting, yes, but no more than sucking your wheel all the way!
A NoCom won't provide a draft. Except to his feet maybe. Too low. Even a mid racer, big wheels, rider seat below tops of wheels, won't provide an upright a draft. Only a high racer will give a decent draft.
Cool video.
Where you speed up the video and there's no sound, i'd have dubbed over it with "Ace of Spades" by motorhead. But that's just me. :-)
did you know that you were loosing more speed hitting those bumps than you were gaining using the entire turn?
Cool, I was once a go fast roadie now I'm old and would like to do a recumbent, I used to avg 21.5 by myself over 27 miles (flat land) and i think i could beat that on one of these.
no you wont actually since recumbents use different muscles than an upright bicycle
Yes, he will. Also he says 'I was once' So he has to train again anyway.
wow look at the speed difference in comparison to standard upright bicycles.... disappeared....
Did you even watch the full vid lol
Did you ....
cant wait to whack my ZIPP super 9 2013 discs on as well as 2013 Firecrest 808
Recumbent wins. pretty cool
3rd isn't too bad, considering you were on a graphite splitter framed low racer. Though, getting beat by a DF on a flat course has got to sting a little. If there were some hills in there, maybe, but your aero should have offset his weight advantage. (All else being equal.)
It shouldn't sting. The DF saved his legs by drafting almost the whole time. And while it isn't as good as drafting behind another DF, it still is conserving energy. Either way, the DF rider was a strong rider and it is not uncommon for the leader to lose the race in the last few meters because the rider behind can better calculate when to sprint.
You forgot "intelligent", "comfortable", and "KickASS!". Obviously CarbonLanceupyourASS is an acquired taste of certain types of bikes and me thinks someone needs to look up the meaning of the term "finesse".
you talking about the guy that was tailing him?
its not a road bike...
its a Tribike or Time-Trial bike..
hmmm i think the guy was so quick because he was a real powerful rider...
otherwise recumbent have the upper hand
yeah the TT bike guy was shredding... and it's not really the same as a "roadie"
TT bike I think. Or a low end Tribike. Newer Tribikes are more radical.
Lol the blue guy was drafting you the woke race!
@ 1:00 during the race, all that clunking and it's non-stop; that, would drive me nuts. What is that.. the magnets flopping around in your motorizes hub or what exactly?
That is the two-cylinder engine.
Okay, this is boring and noisy.
Recumbent bikes are fast and aerodynamic and all, but they just lack the class and finesse.
They also lack the Erectile dysfunction some DF riders get due to nerve damage ...DFs are so ancient
@@Interdiction It is common with time trial bikes. This is why there are no 4 hour time trials, it would lead to severe issues with the body. Still if you live in heavy wind, very flat areas ( Southern Ontario is nasty for Upright bikes) a trikie makes more sense.
