  • Today i'm playing on a very special Morris W-120 vintage guitar.
    Morris Guitars is a Japanese brand established in Nagano by Toshio Moridaira. The company was founded in 1961, but production of acoustic guitars started in 1967 when the company was known as Yoshino Musical Instruments at Yoshino Town, Matsumoto City, Nagano Prefecture.
    Song: John Prine - Angel from Montgomery

    I have a TF Morris W80(?) I bought in late 70's. Looks identical to yours, but am confused by model numbering. I didn't use it much at the time so I unstrung it and kept in hardshell case in basement for about 40 years. Took it out recently, had it adjusted, restrung, tuned, etc by a local luthier. It is a fantastic instrument, and it just 'begs' me to play it, after sitting idle for so long!
    Thanks for your video.

    Thank you for doing these episodes. It’s great to hear the sound and playability of each new vintage. The singing is pretty nice too…

    I've got a great Morris story! I'm from NZ right, it''s 1990, I'm living in California, played guitar a little (I mean a teensy bit) as a kid. I've thought, aged 33, I'm going to learn to play guitar. I'm visiting LA, I go into a pawn shop, there's a nice looking guitar sitting there. The guy behind the counter is Middle Eastern, I know from experience they like to bargain, so I go to myself, you've got to bargain really hard. Of course I have no idea what I'm buying, or at least attempting to. I've never heard of a Morris! Sounded kinda cheesy actually (i can't try it out, I'm a leftie, & I maybe remember G & D). After a very protracted process, in which I feign nonchalance & make to leave more than once, we agree on a price - $150. At that point he brings out a beautiful, brand new, hard case, that I had no idea was part of the package. Upon getting it home, to Mammoth Lakes, Ca, I realized I had the good fortune to purchase a brand new item, that had been sitting in someone's closet unloved for about a decade I guess. So I flip the strings & begin my journey, it's been a slow gradual build to this point. I've never seen a Morris in NZ. Being a leftie, I don't get to pick up any old guitar & have a play , so I have very little to compare to. It's only in the last few years as I've gone into the odd music store & tried out various guitars, that I realize what I have. Nothing has held a candle to my Morris W603. In recent years I have learned, & appreciate the provenance of Morris guitars, built in Japan, by Tashio "Mori" Moridaira. I could never find one in NZ, if I could it would cost me 10x what I lucked onto mine for. It's nice to see Mr Arnold, a connoisseur, speak so highly of the Morris. Chur chur.

    I've been in love with Morris guitars for some time. I owned one for a short while (it actually came to me from Japan). One young family member came to visit, and I played that Morris while he was here. He stated he really liked it far more than other acoustics I played during his visit. Then he stated he was looking for a guitar.
    After he left, I started thinking, and I thought said relative didn't have a lot of money to spend, and maybe I should offer him the Morris dreadnought for less than half the money it cost me. It must be stressed here that prior to his visit, I had no intention of selling it. I called him, offered it, he accepted, came by, paid, took it.
    The following week, I started to hear his complaints about the guitar through another family member. I explained in grear detail how the price paid just barely covered the guitar shipping cost from Japan, and that at the time of its construction, that guitar was made with superior woods and craftsmanship, etc. The whole event was such that I sent a refund check for the full amount, and requested to have my Morris back.
    It hasn't happened yet.

    I have two acoustic guitars and both are Morris - MB-301 12 string and W80. The latter has been replaced with a new nut. Been using them for over a decade now and I cannot imagine myself using other acoustic guitars other than these two.

    actually, I'm fairly certain there is no solid wood on Morris guitars, but of course high grade laminated wood can develop nice sound after a few decades

    • @bobbritches846
      @bobbritches846 Před 9 měsíci

      Just the cheaper ones. Plenty of solid wood models. Maybe some solid tops only like other companies did ..Though you are right the better built laminated models sound really nice after 40 years.
