FTWDK, the Liga de Expansion (also known as Liga Desarollos) is and isn't really a second division. Mexico is a case study in what happens when the biggest league in the country gets too popular. In this case, LigaMX has become so popular and well-entrenched, the sort of clubs that would normally inhabit a league's second or third tier were effectively starved of support, to the point where only four or five clubs in the former second division, then known as AscensoMX, had facilities that met minimum standards to host LigaMX matches. In an attempt to "help" these clubs, LigaMX and the FMF launched what they called a "stabilization project" that reformed the AscensoMX into the Liga de Expansion, and placed what they called a "temporary moratorium" on promotion and relegation to and from LigaMX that in theory would allow the clubs of the LdE to build the infrastructure needed to meet LigaMX standards. What really happened was pretty different. Of the clubs in the LdE, only a few are truly independent clubs. Most LdE clubs are in one way or another minor-league affiliates (think Minor League Baseball) of LigaMX clubs, and some are literally LigaMX reserve sides. The de facto ring-fencing of LigaMX was not well-received by many within Mexican football, so much so that a rival league and FA were established in protest, the Liga Balompie Mexicano and Asociacion Nacional de Balompie Mexicano, which are both recognized by CONIFA. There have been some reports that LigaMX is beginning to consider reviving pro/rel, but some reports have also suggested that instead of promoting and relegating, LigaMX may simply add any LdE sides they deem strong enough to survive as expansion franchises. FUN FACT: While technically accurate about gold being the name of Dorados Sinaloa, the club's name is derived from that of the fish on the crest - the dorado, also known as a dolphinfish, but probably best known by its Hawai'ian name, mahi-mahi.
I have a Dorados de Sinaloa jersey I bought in Mazatlan in 2008! I wanted a jersey of a local club and Mazatlan FC didn't exist in those days. I love my one week visit to Mexico and still yearn to return!
Awesome! Thanks for the extra info, heartbreaking to think they destroyed lower league football for the good of a few top clubs. It sounds like what the authorities would love to do in Scotland but the fans of the lower league teams are holding firm so far. They are already trying to destabilise things through there friends in the local media, the coverage is almost nonexistent and only ever negative now 😢
@@paulalexander8874 FWIW, I don't think there was any sort of purposeful intent on behalf of LigaMX for things to happen the way they have there. And prior to the pandemic, the exact same situation was happening in England, as the Premier League was, for all intents and purposes, starving EFL and non-League clubs of exposure and money without actually meaning to do so. Where things have differed was that English spectators have begun to return to the grounds of their local EFL/non-League clubs, with one significant reason being the cost of regularly attending PL matches is increasingly beyond the range of many supporters. Whether or not a similar return is happening in Mexico is something I wouldn't know.
Atletico Morelia is technically a phoenix club. The original club Monarcas de Morelia moved north to Mazatlan Sinaloa and changed their name to Mazatlan FC. This happens quite often in Mexico unfortunately.
I really like the Oaxaca one its very original. My favourite has to be Estadio Ciudad de los Deportes because of the steep stands and because its sunken you can see the buildings around it. It looks like a great place to watch a match at nighttime and feel like you are part of the city that surrounds it. Estadio Moreles is pretty good too. Overall I love Mexican football stadiums, I've been trying to watch some Liga MX this year its a very exciting league. edit: Love the Estadio Tlahuicole too! Haven't seen that one before.
Atlante wasn't second-tier when I was a kid in Mexico. Is there relegation in the Mexican league? Never knew. Atlante used to be a big club I think. Also, two vowels in Spanish are just pronounced like two vowels put together. Rohoh not Roo (as in food) Woah, my old city is here. Celaya's stadium used to have bleachers just on one side and empty fields on the other three. And kids (including me) were allowed on the outer zones of the pitch.
