My name is Sam and together with my girlfriend Lyanne, I am on a quest to restore the beauty of this old Italian villa from 1895. Join us as we have to let go of our Dutch habits to fit in in our Italian surroundings, were the word 'plan' gets redefined and our tastebuds are awakened.
The goal of this project is to show that with limited financial means and a lot of optimism we can resurrect the beauty of this abandoned villa in a green and sustainable way. But most of all learn from everything that we encounter and enjoy it whilst we're at it. - Jak na to + styl
Your dad is a superstar, all those stairs to schlep up and down, he has been a huge part of your renovation, it must be cool working together on Villa Oliva. You both work extremely hard.
He really is, so happy to have him around. it is a blast working with him, it is once in a lifetime experience. thanks!
The walls are thicker at the bottom to carry the load of all the height above them, they get thinner the higher up they go as there is less load on them and this is what you are noticing.
Fantastic work as always gents, stay safe and stay as warm as you can
That's also all that I could think of, just didn't think they'd do that to walls. thank you!!
You both work so hard that I'd bet you and your dad fall asleep as soon as your heads hit the pillow! Isaid it before and I'll say it again - your dad is a gem. Good job all.
definitely, thanks!!
I'm happy to see your steady progress! Water system for a 200 year old house... I don't think there's a manual for that!
Love watching your progress every day great work gentlemen.👏👏
thank you so much!
slowly, slowly you are reclaiming that beautiful old house. Well-done,
I like that pipe-tool you made !! Vriendelike groete van New Zealand.
Clever problem-solving tool! Recycle, reuse ❤
The older generation know how to be inventive. I love watching dad work.
You men are something else, I love that your using the same tracks of the old water pipes,
Your Dad is Legendary, watching you both work together is amazing and can tell your cut from the same cloth.
Loving everything you do to restore this Vila back to what it would have been and so much more. You will reap all your hard work later on when it's all done, and have your videos as a diary to document it all, just amazing😃👌🌈🤟
thank you so much! that's exactly what I was thinking!
Along with the floors, I just love those railings
I applaud your tenacity, stay with it. thanks for sharing.
Love watching doing the pipe work
I admire your perseverance, great job Sam and Dad. It is slow going but yout doing a fantastic job. Keep at it.😅 🇨🇦
like your filming techniques. it's like the house and its bits and pieces have a life of their own.
glad to hear that, I try my best to create something interesting while showing the hard truth of what it takes to go through a project like this. Thanks!
Great job, getting closer
New tool looks like a medieval weapon it’s a great idea helps make the job a bit easier.this is the second step to being posh first a grand piano and now serves bells 😂😂 😂Ann🏴
hahahah that's right, what's next?
OMG, the work you have a head of you seems daunting to me. But you're young, you can do it, actually you don't need the gym right now because all the work you're doing, I'm exhausted lol great job, much love from Oklahoma USA Jackie 🇺🇸💖
Thanks Jackie! it is a lot of work, and I am not even showing you everything, but I am sure you get the gist ;). Definitely, I don't need a gym membership, saves me some money so I can buy an extra can of paint later :). Thanks as always Jackie!
I'm always amazed and a bit worried that you do all these on-screen activities without gloves. 😀
can imagine, we're paying attention though!
Great video, I look forward to seeing your progress. Keep up the good work!!
Great idea the pipe with the jagged edge
It's a time-tested method for drilling large holes without fancy power tools. My uncle, who is a proper old-school plumber, taught me that trick. He learned the trade from a crazy old-timer who insisted on installing lead toilet drains as late as the 1980s, at least 20 years after everyone else had switched to push-fit drains. As suggested below, you'd normally whack the end of that pipe with a big lump hammer and rotate it a little after every blow.
Long, thick SDS drill bits are still painfully expensive, so there's still good reasons to use that method today, especially as a DIYer.
OK, I believe that your DAD is the STAR of the show. I going to hired him for my next house improvement project.!!!! 🌟
hahaha he certainly is! good idea, he is the MVP here,
Have you thought about using a wall chaser to have the pipes in the walls and then plaster over them? Would look great and the chaser is just like using an angle grinder. Great work!!! 🇦🇺
I did, for finishing up, we are probably going to need to use that system. thanks for sharing! thanks!
Try using a pipe wrench to hold the pipe (drill pipe), tap the pipe with a hammer and turn with pipe wrench a little with each tap. Might make "drilling" a little easier. You and your Dad are doing a great job!
good idea, we did think of that too, but this already went so smooth. thanks for sharing though!!
Great work!!!!
Your videos are getting better and better. Even if the content sometimes isn't so interesting as in the beginning, your camera-eye is really improving!
thank you! I can imagine it's a bit tedious sometimes, believe me, I know all about it. However, the goal is to show you the process, and it is a long one. but I totally get your point though. Thanks!!
yes good one, I normally think about it, but when editing it realised I didn't't notice it there, thanks for sharing!
Yay!
Bonne continuation 👏🏻👏🏻
It was a “normal” villa for someone who definitely had some money haha
Wow I admire your dedication to installing a whole new water system
I am totally confused as to why you had to dismantle the original system
Obviously I have no idea about renovations but wow all of the outside piping system and now all of this internal system
Why please?
thanks! no worries, happy to explain. We need space for the new water pipes, since the old ones are old and not safe after such a long time (rust, bacteria etc). We are using the placement of the old system so we know we're not messing up something else and meanwhile we're learning about the old design and how it was constructed.
@@Villa_Oliva Thank you and yes it does make absolute sense
Wearing the safety glasses like a hair ornament...oh, my.....that's not going to help.....;)
hahha oops
Don't think I'd keep the service bells themselves other than decorative. The light panel would be interesting if it remained but was repurposed. Just don't know to what. Occupancy indicator for the rental portion?
good idea, I am also struggling with its purpose
Just wondering, couldn't you just leave any buried pipes inside the wall/floor, and close up the holes?
I could, but I need a whole to feed my new tubing through right?
This is a STEAM Radiator you said! I've got the baseboard heater runs by Hot Water in my place, which both don't need to worry about GAS LEAK, 🙏...sounds good, so far, and those bends need like a 90 elbow or you've got the existing one already....be careful on that sharp toothed pipe you trimmed😂
have it said that, haha I don't know if I said that. yeah it's quite the work, thanks!
@@Villa_Oliva oh, I didn't mean to misinformed you 😞, my fault....But just googled it: Are radiators heated by hot water? Check it out. I've got the baseboard which runs the same way STEAM or HOT Water. We got the basement in every building,in this community and the hot water, gas stove, and heat is included in my rent, I pay the electric bill each month, $122
lots of hard work
thanks! I hope so too!
Good job mannen! 😁
You and your father make a good team. I admire your work ethic and tenacity. Great job and it will be a hugh accomplishment when all is completed. Keep going!!!! God bless and take care.
thanks!!
Well, you’re that much closer to having a water system! Things will get better once that task is done I’m sure. You guys are hard workers, sometimes I feel tired for you both, but the results will be well worth it.
I bet that uncle was your dad's brother 😉
haha that's right,!
At :42, do the small curved features you showed under the stairs & in previous videos have a structural purpose? Or?
Steelweld is still sponsoring?
I wish haha, that's just some old clothing we have laying around
I'm going to watch sweetie, not to worry!
Maybe drill a hole through that pipe and pass a rod through it giving you a couple hand holds for leverage. Easier than trying to hold onto the pipe
Good one!
👍
Why don’t you just buy a big drill bit and save yourselves the struggle of enlarging holes with a pipe? You do seem to be determined to do things the hard way with this restoration 😮
I partly agree with you but 25 mm and larger SDS drill bits are painfully expensive and a "pipe drill bit" like that is surprisingly efficient. Now, chipping out all that cement around the pipes on the other hand... I'd have grabbed a cheap or decent SDS hammer long ago!
I see your point. The reason is, it helps us go slow and easy. It is as much about exploring and figuring out the design from back in the day as much as it is about making progress. But there are definitely times where we could've used power tools, I guess I prefer it this way
thanks! because we don't know what's in these walls and floors. it is as much about exploring and digging up the design and history of this place as it is about making progress and making space for the new piping.
Great work 👍🏼
Which camera your using ?
thanks! just my phone, the best one is the one you've got with you right

Why are detaching a radiator why dont you leave it where it is ?
These are polyethylene pipes, wayyyy stronger than the pvc pipes you’d normally put there. Hope that explains why we put these ones in
❤
Hey Sam, I am just curious, what kind of heather system you plan to install?
Was the old heather system broken and was it running with oil or gas?
There's a gas boiler on the outside wall. Seems an interesting choice considering they definitely had frost during the past few videos.
I would love to go electric, but that's not feasible for now. I will dive into it a little in video 062. The old one was broken as far as I know, and indeed, it was the old (gas) boiler near the backdoor
Thank you so much for your answer Sam, I love to see your progress and won't miss your Updates. And tell your Dad he is a great father.
You’re most welcome, that’s great to hear! Will do, thank you so much!
Has anyone explained why the former plumbers bent the pipes in the wall?
About the bent pipes I asked a friend who is a plumber and had been on crews restoring old buildings in Canada. I may not explain this well. He said very old places used a gravity heating system. When heated water becomes lighter the system have to be designed in a way where gravity circulates the water in the system without the use of a circulating pump, no power needed. That may be why the pipes have S type bends in them. Only wealthy people had that type of heating system. The fittings could not be concealed in the walls as they are points of leakage. Maybe that is why you have bent plumbing.
Thanks for following up! I don't see why the bends are necessary in your explanation sorry. you might be right though, I have no idea. a few suggestions have been made, a.o. 'this way the pipes can be mounted by one person, since the other part is stuck in the wall' 'this way the pipes don't move and make sounds, since they're stuck in the wall' both interesting options.
If you do not mind my asking, how much did you pay for the house?
I don't mind, will talk about that in a future video though, thanks for asking :)
This is 'just' my house atm. maybe later I can welcome some guests, but that's far from the situation now
it is 'just' my house. ,maybe later I can welcome some guests though, but that's far from the case now
I don’t know if you told us why you are taking the radiator out, but i can’t help wondering why?
Are you putting in another heatingsystem or? You need something to heat the house…
I have been watching a lot pf youtubers that seams to not care about to check how the house work. I can tell you that I live in an old house that had a boiler worked on oil. I did not want that so I put in a pelletboiler. Now my son doesn’t want me to carrie so much so he did put in an other system a fancy viessman thing. What happens in the house when the chimney is not heated is that the ventilationsystem doesn’t work as it should.
I ended up not using the new heatingsystem…..
I think that it is worth going thru the way a house is ment to work before starting to work.. i hope and think you have done that.
Yeah you're right, that is super important and I have definitely done so. Hope you're alright now though and you have heating so you don't have to sit through the cold like I have to. Regarding the removal of the heating system, we are putting in local heating. So every room should or will get its own heating, that's the idea for now at least. The ground floor and basement are different however, more on that in video 62
@@Villa_Oliva looking forward to that. And it is a beutiful house!
Where do you and your dad stay at night to sleep and bath?
We sleep in the living room, you've probably seen my bed in other videos. You can get an idea of how we 'take a shower' in video 55
You and your dad are great. But you need some serious help. Its like watching paint dry for me. I want to see real progress.
I'm enjoying the "real progress" of this project. I think we've been spoiled with artificial progress on tv shows etc. All good things take time.
Thanks! you and me both, but this is the reality, this is what it takes. But I understand it can be a little tiring, so do feel free to come back in a bit and I am sure we will have made some progress. Also, this is the reason I am releasing the summary videos every first Sunday of the month, it's a bit less talking and you get to see what has happened. feel free to watch that if you prefer :) Thanks again!
