    I feel like the next step would be if games just straight up said "Made for Proton" implying it is absolutely designed for all platforms

    • @SS-ARYAN
      @SS-ARYAN Před měsícem +11

      Would be better if it just straight up said “Made for Linux”, think that would shock many people and dispel many concerns of fence-sitters and naysayers about Linux not being ready, also the SteamOS logo needs to be swapped out to reflect that with Tux, though I think it would be cuter if it was swapped for a Tux holding the Steam logo. The unverified and partially verified status also needs to be changed, calling a game only partially verified because of “small” text on the Deck or keyboard requirements does not help.

    • @mdexterc2894
      @mdexterc2894 Před měsícem +1

      @@SS-ARYAN but Linux as a platform is actually too diverse for its own good when it comes to gaming, and by putting the focus on Linux itself could backfire. Keep in mind that distros that are built for gaming and surpass Windows in performance wouldn't have the same focus as Fedora workstation, Debian, and OpenSUSE. To say "made for Linux" implies a unified effort by all Linuxes to make the experience as seamless as a dedicated gaming distro, which isn't going to happen.
      And since you wouldn't really want to have to list tested distros, might as well use the known Linux gaming tech, Proton

    • @SS-ARYAN
      @SS-ARYAN Před měsícem

      @@mdexterc2894 Do not get me wrong, I get why they did it, but I think it is not as big of a deal as they and you think. I am just slightly upset in the same manner as when I hear people calling Linux “Ubuntu” because they think Linux itself is too scary for the common folk. Whilst I think “Proton” is perhaps a better descriptor for some, I think it is also worse as it might imply BSD or even MacOS support and a newbie is even less likely to know what it is. My proposal is that they call it “SteamOS/Linux”, it is already written as such in some places, but there is not as much of a good effort all-around to give both veterans and newbies alike, more useful information prior to a purchase. Do also note Proton is already a distro agnostic tool, so I think “Linux” is not only fine, but more accurate, the only other factor that really needs to be listed out is the kernel version, that is the most likely factor to make or break performance and peripheral (controller) support after Proton/WINE.

    • @andrewjones992
      @andrewjones992 Před měsícem +1

      Alot of games on Linux work better through proton using windows version than their native Linux version.

    • @vinny-zebu
      @vinny-zebu Před měsícem

      @@mdexterc2894Just make the game compatible with SteamOS natively and maybe Ubuntu. I think that's the error gamedevs make, you can't possibly satisfy every distro out there so pick the ones most people will use.

    I don't necessarily think this indicates a change in the verification system.
    Remember that Valve marked The Last of Us Part 1 and Remnant II as "Verified" before their launches and both games turned out to be basically unplayable on Deck.

    I don't know that Steam is doing anything very differently to get this title verified. I'm sure that Sega and Atlus are just being proactive at getting better marketing out there, maybe intentionally a little stronger PC-side. Steam is just doing their thing, and it's good that the Verified program is giving us that edge just by existing.

  • @spiritmacardi9300
    @spiritmacardi9300 Před měsícem +6

    I feel like the Steam Deck verification should also state what the expected FPS will be with the default settings. I mean, there's games that are "verified" but struggle to reach 60 and have the fans going at full speed even on lowest settings.

    • @user-ec8zd8zp4x
      @user-ec8zd8zp4x Před měsícem

      The Steam Deck was a standard 30 FPS system from the start. Not a 60 FPS system. 30 FPS is the standard and higher FPS is a bonus. That should be your expectation. You can forget about 60 FPS in modern AAA and higher end 3D indie or AA games.
      Older AAA and 3D indies might be something like 40 FPS/40Hz or can even hit a stable 60 FPS. If this is you mindset, you'll never be disappointed.

    • @spiritmacardi9300
      @spiritmacardi9300 Před měsícem

      @@user-ec8zd8zp4x Problem is, many games that are verified don't have a 30 fps lock option. Like Dying Light has a framerate that's all over the place, and trying to force 30 through altering the refresh settings makes it chug like crazy.

  • @ZEROxDEADDEAD
    @ZEROxDEADDEAD Před měsícem +3

    Over half of my installed Steam games on my Deck which play flawlessly are ""unsupported"". Another 30 alongside the 61 games I have through Steam are GOG classics I installed manually without any tools, and those work too.
    The verification system is just outright incorrect as it is.

    Unrelated but to any idea how to make Netflix and Apple Music and Apple TV with Canadian subscriptions work on the deck? I can get the US version but being in Canada it won't show my library that I have on Apple TV for example. I'm not super tech savvy I got the US versions to work but it just wouldn't show all the Music etc. that I paid for. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. And thank you for your in-depth videos they're very good.

    i recently discovered a project called ExoDOS.
    i do not know why it does not have more "press".
    Probably a version adapting all those DOSBox games with the launchbox frontend to the Steam Deck and other handhelds would be attractive to give it more press, that I think it deserves,

    I played all of the Descent games. Including the one that's basically a Descent game that was released less than 5 years ago. I didn't like that one because important permanent upgrades were hidden in secret areas, and I hate that kind of thing. I don't want to have to go around spending hours poking at every little spot in a level to see if I missed a secret that I need in order to really progress the game later.
    I feel that everything should be under a Copyleft style license unless there's a good reason not to. So, my vote would be for the GPLv3.

    Deck Filter looks good, but a heads up that’s it’s £5 would have been nice
    It’s expensive and I get it, the dev deserves to be paid for their work, but I think it would have best for you to disclose it was a paid product
