      Indeed. It’s so terrifying really. People are too scared to call 911 because they can’t afford the bill. They let it get to the point where people would rather die alone then be treated but be thousands of dollars in dept. but the USA still treats itself as a rich country. The United States is not a rich country, it's a poor country with a lot of money. If you're extremely talented or intelligent, and not clumsy, the US is probably the best place in the world to live. The system is stacked heavily to allow people of talent and advantage to rise to the top quickly. And people with money get more and more, and people with less will never gain more. It’s also like the prison system. You get out on parole with no money. You get no money, but you have to get your life together. No family or friends, just you. And if you need money you will (for example) will start dealing (again) just to get some money in the bank. I’m sorry for the rant lol. Got kinda carried away

      @Marcin Brzeziński it's simple: a hospital doesn't even need to charge that much. They do in the US because they "can".
      Hospitals in the US are a business to generate revenue first and foremost.
      A blood test is a simple and cheap procedure.
      There is no reason besides "we can get away with it, so we charge that much". Same with many other things that are health related.

    • @DuwMinh
      @DuwMinh Před 3 lety +16

Americans on average live such an unhealthy lifestyle that a single payer system would eventually become a burden to everyone… Maybe we should teach our children to be healthy first, feed them nutritious meals at school, have them work out on a regular basis, incentivize sport activities outside of school etc… Even the military came out and said the shape of our youth, and eventually adults when they grow older, is a threat to national security, as there will be less and less able bodied men who can serve…

And I honestly was baffled and was like okay so you making $50,000 should pay more overall in percentage in taxes than my friend making $250,000 at Amazon cause he pays more. He’s not a business owner, just a dude who chose CS as his major in college but you think him only paying 18% of his earnings in federal taxes while you have to pay 30% is fair!?!? That mentality is literally welfare for the wealthy but the people who hold these beliefs aren’t small in number here, they aren’t rich either, and it’s devastating.

    I am from Canada. We have Universal Health Care (UHC). There are some serious inaccuracies here. Note how it keep saying that the cost is zero at point of service. What that means in layman's terms is that you are not expected to pay when you get the service. You or your insurance company pay later. That statement is actually only partially true here and intentionally deceptive. There are some expenses that are not covered at all (dental, cosmetic procedures, ambulance, crutches etc) and there are some that are only partially covered (prescriptions therapy, treatment etc,) so you will still be out of pocket for some medical expenses at point of service. NOTHING EVER COSTS $0. Somebody has to pay for it and it is very expensive. It is the taxpayers who pay for the whole program through their income taxes.
    Our system is set up so that the Federal Government sets the standards that the Provinces must meet and it is the Provinces (our version of States) that administer the program. I live in Ontario and here we have the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) which is the government mandated health insurance program. It covers the basics and if your life or health is in danger, you are covered period but you might still need additional supplemental medical insurance to cover expenses not covered by OHIP. I make a decent income and pay the maximum OHIP premium of $750/year when I file my personal income tax return in the spring. I also have supplemental medical insurance though my employer. I pay around $10 / month for full family coverage. My co-pay is 10 to 20% depending type of expenses. What I pay out of pocket is also partially tax deductible.
    Our system is not without its flaws. 37.5% our of total Provincial budget goes to health care. Ontario plans to spend $186.1 billion this year, of which $69.8 billion is earmarked for health-care expenses, including $8.3 billion to cover COVID-19 health-care costs. Waiting times and shortages in rural areas are common. Anyone who tells you that your taxes would not go up is absolutely lying to you. That being said, we Canadians take pride in our universal single payer program would never consent to abolishing UHC in favour of US style screw the people program. I will never go broke if I get sick. I will never be forced to decide to pay my medical bills or my mortgage.
    As a final note, the total cost of all the Provincial programs combined here is born by a total population of 33 million people so we have far less tax revenue to work with. Americans should bear the cost over a population of 333 million so the per capita expenditure should in fact be lower. There is no legitimate reason why UHC would not wok in the US. it is merely because greedy corporate interests would rather keep you sick, dying and broke than pay one extra cent of their profits in taxes.
