  • Last week I talked about about 10 things that I love about Affinity Photo that I struggled with in Adobe PhotoShop, but Affinity Photo isn't all sunshine and roses.
I struggle with some things in Affinity Photo, and this time I'm talking about 10 things that frustrate me about the program and I hope they change as soon as possible.
If you're a graphic designer, photographer, or digital illustrator, and you're thinking of making the switch from Adobe to Affinity, you may want to watch this video first.

Hi Dave, thanks for the video! Just a few replies to the points you've raised:
Channels Panel: yes, it does behave differently! The main pitfall for people is clicking on a composite channel (which isolates that channel for both viewing and editing) then not realising you can click the Reset icon to get back to editing all channels.
Channel isolation allows you to use tools (e.g. painting) and destructive filters on particular channels.
The second section of the Channels panel changes depending on the layer you have selected. In your video, you've got the Black & White adjustment layer selected. Adjustment and filter layers have their own layer masks, so this would enable you to invert, clear or fill that mask, plus you could save it as a greyscale layer or spare selection. To do any of these, just right click "Layer Name Alpha" to see those options.
If you were using Black & White plus maybe Threshold to create a mask of the tree, what I would do is Merge Visible (Layer>Merge Visible) to create a merged pixel layer. You can then right click this layer or go to the Layer menu and choose Rasterise to Mask, which will create a mask layer ready for you to drop in to any other layer.
Similarly, with Protect Alpha, why not use layer clipping instead? You can either drop a mask layer into your pixel layer that you intend to paint on, or alternatively if you have a cutout layer with just the tree information on, drop a pixel layer into that and paint on it--the contents will then be clipped to the tree.
Following on from the above, dragging layers into other layers has two distinct behaviours, clipping and masking--I did a video on the difference which hopefully clears it up: czcams.com/video/CBl20YGZRTk/video.html
Smart objects: we import PSD smart objects, but in Affinity you don't need them per se. Many behaviours in the app are non-destructive. E.g. the Move Tool (V) is used to move, rotate, scale and shear layers, but it never asks you to commit your transformation. Need to alter the perspective? Use a live Perspective filter (Layer>New Live Filter Layer>Distort>Perspective). Need to add motion blur, radial blur, unsharp mask? Check out the other live filter layers. As you've discovered, the shape tools are all vector based, as is the Pen Tool, so those all scale infinitely.
You can also drop in embedded documents, other .afphoto files for example. You can do this via File>Place or by drag-dropping the file directly over your document. It then becomes an embedded document--you can double click the thumbnail or, with the Move Tool (V) selected, go to the context toolbar at the top left and click Edit document. It will then open up in a separate tab.
Also just worth pointing out--adjustment and live filter layers don't need a mask clipping to them, they already have a mask (the white thumbnail). Just select the layer and you can begin painting on/off its mask, or go to Layer>Invert to flip the mask.
Twirl and other filters: we typically restrict the kernel value (Radius) to 1024px for performance reasons since everything displays in real time on your document, but there is a little trick here--just type a value above 1024 to go higher. E.g. with twirl you can make the twirl much bigger by using 4096.
Deform: it's like Puppet Warp, you click on your layer/image to create constraint points then drag them around.
Affine: it's the technically correct name for what happens with, say, the Offset filter. E.g. you might use the Offset filter to create seamless textures or 360 panoramas.
Stock panel: not sure here, there was an API issue with Pexels for a while I believe, but that appears to be fixed now. We have had issues with people on Windows using VPNs or proxies, not sure if you have anything like that configured?
Transform tool: as mentioned earlier, you can do your moving, scaling, rotating and shearing with this tool. I know you found the Perspective tool on the left, but try the live Perspective filter instead (Layer>New Live Filter Layer>Distort>Perspective). Same thing except you can do it non-destructively. I like to bind this to Ctrl+T! To find this in the shortcuts, click the second dropdown which mirrors your top menu options and choose Layer, then find the New Live Filter Layer > Perspective entry.
Don't forget that we work hard to maintain the in-app help which is searchable! There's also an online version that is searchable and allows you to add favourites: affinity.help -- everything is separated into logical categories and you can also search for filter names to get a clear idea of what they do, how to use them etc. I don't think people are used to having this old-school style help where everything is documented because nobody realises it's even there ;)
Thanks again and hope the above is helpful to you,
    James

As a webdesigner who often works with small images and JPG format there are two things thats really annoy me.
    (1) Photo always zooms small images to fit the screen and you're forced to CMD+1 / CTRL+1 to show them at 100%. If you work with small stuff you end up with a huge pixelated "thing" that covers the entire working area. And that also happens every time you resize the image: if you open a 300x300 pixel photo it will auto-fill the entire screen. Zoom it to 100%, resize to 150x150px and it will -again- go to fullscreen, in a glorious pixel mess. any image that is smaller than your working area should be opened at 100%. Huge images should instead be resized to fit the working area, for the sake of my eyes...
    (2) If you open a JPG image, edit it an CMD+S / CTRL+S to save and overwrite it, Photo will automatically choose 100% quality. The only way to save it in a compressed format is by going to "Export" and do a couple more clicks every-single-time. And of course the "Export" tool will NOT choose the same destination folder as the original image, for some weird reason. There should be an option to let Photo save an image the way YOU want it. Just add a warning "hey, remember you're losing quality here..." if you really want to be verbose. But let me choose.
P.S. Think about doing some Photo/Design tutorials, if you have some spare time. The web needs them, let's all ride the Affinity wave by offering more tutorials, more content and more tricks!

The "Protect Alpha" thing is easy.
Drag a layer onto another one in your layer list, that will make that layer only able to draw where the "master" layer is.
If you're using a jpeg and everything's on the same layer, I prefer to do a magic wand selection with high tolerance, copy paste that, so you've got a new layer, and do it with that.

According to Digitally Fearless Affinity with Richard Spezzano

    4 weeks ago (edited)
"Photoshop calls it a smart object but In Affinity, if you import a photo it's already a "smart object" without having to do anything. You can scale it up or down without losing image quality. If you want to create a mask from a black and white conversion of the colour image, you ought to create / have a Black and white pixel layer (which you could do combining downwards a Black and White not destructive filter with a duplicate of the image layer if being beneath it, or just converting to monochrome a duplicate of the image pixel layer, or whatever) and then, you have to apply a “Rasterise to Mask” (which you can find in the Layer menu). One thing Affinity Photo does a bit differently is that every new image brought into a document is automatically a Smart Object. While Photoshop does this if you drag and drop a new image into a document, in Affinity Photo all images are smart objects by default.

As a photographer, the thing that Photo lacks is decent Raw processing. Adobe Camera Raw is great and is my preference over Lightroom, which I only use for Negative Lab Pro (I still shoot film and have a large archive I’m scanning/digitising). Sure, Photo has some basic Raw tools and the Adjustments panel can do a lot of corrections, but I much prefer having the small sidecar file with the Raw adjustments instead of a large Affinity Photo file. Fingers crossed that Affinity will develop something like Lightroom in the future to really win over the photography community. I know there are other affordable Lightroom alternatives out there, but something with Affinity’s price point and suite integration would be awesome.

As I beginner to Affinity Photo, (an not used Photoshop much), some things I'd change:
Save / Save As... I'm used to different behaviours (in different apps):
    - Save sometimes saves destructively to the original JPG or similar, and sometimes to the .afphoto. In both cases there are no prompts, and it is not obvious to me what has happened. Suggestion: provide a "This is going to happen. Are you sure?" maybe only the first time for a particular original file.
Save As.... seems to default to .afphoto, with no option to save in original format (have to go to Export for that). Suggestion: change "Save As...." to "Save As.(afphoto)..." or maybe group Save, Save As... and Export together on the menu.
Have option to make things not on the canvas be visible. What happened to me was that I dragged several JPGs into AP (one at a time) and I could only see one of them, even though they all showed up in Layers. I re-arranged them in Layers with no visible change in the work area. I have found messages in forums giving unsatisfactory work-arounds, but no simple "Show stuff not on Canvas" option. My solution is to have what I call the Arrow tool selected, and scroll around.
Suggestion: have a simple "Show stuff not on Canvas" option.
These are things which probably trip up a lot of beginners.

Channels pallet is a fail. Unusable to me until they simplify it, I recal Photopaint from Corel having a very similar channels pallet (granted that was 25 years ago ;-). There are a few things that Affinity does which make it totally unusable for the kind of editing I do.
    1. Raw edits in the Develop persona are Destructive. No way to go back and tweak once you click that develop button.
    2. Relates to #1 in that there is no way to easily sync a raw edit across multiple raw files. So it takes twice as long if not more to tonally match raw edits for things like focus stacking.
    3. No Fill adjustment for the special 8 blend modes making stuff like Hard Mix totally useless when in reality it is a very powerful blend mode for color grading in photoshop.
It is a real shame because some of it's features are real game changers. To make the switch I would really have to abandon some techniques I really love which is kind of hard to swallow.

    • @DaveConrey
      @DaveConrey  Před 3 lety +1

Understandable. Photoshop has had 35 years to fine tune (and over-stuff) it's app with features, so there's a little something for everyone. Affinity might not be able to do all that yet, but based on what I'm seeing, they are going to be making a big change when the next major revision comes out. That said, it still won't have everything that Photoshop does, but I believe they are catering to the wide majority right now, and as things develop, will incorporate more controls and features.

Hello, I did not read all the comment, but here is my little help.
For saving the font you want, Edit, defaults, save.
For the selection, go to the channel you want to select, right clic, add selection pixel selection, then clic on the layer mask.
On my screen, the protect alpha is visible directly. But it's true, it should be a layer option.
For the filter, you can choose the "center point" by draging the center with your mouse. You can always go further, just type it or use the arrow key (for radius I was at 4000).
You can use the left clic with all the filters.

Pro tip: When using something new to do something old, DO NOT focus on the technical function name of the old tool. Focus on the specific task that you want to accomplish, say it out loud if necessary.
For example, Smart Objects. That's not a task, it's a thing. You cannot do a thing, you do a task. Why do you need a Smart Object? Oh, you'd like to resize something without losing the object's integrity making it pixelated... Well you CAN do that in Affinity, just do it, converting necessary.
I know this was a oversimplefied example, but so many people get hung up on terminology that not everyone or every software package uses. Identify what specific thing you need to accomplish and that may give you a hint into where to look for the solution.

    - I don’t have issues with RAM or brushes not working.
    - Arial is FAR better looking than Myriad Pro. Photoshop defaults to Myriad Pro every time I open it. It does not stay at the font I previously selected. In fact, EVERY Adobe app does this. Talk about annoying. I freakin’ hate Myriad Pro.
    - Instead of painting with protect alpha, it is much better to create a new layer, paint on that, and then drag it into the layer you want to color to mask it within that layer. That way you workin a non-destructive way and you can change the color whenever you want in the future without affecting anything else in the image.
What I’ve noticed over the years is that people want new software to work like older software so that they don’t have to spend any time learning anything, even if it could improve your process and make it faster. I particularly noticed this with Adobe Illustrator users trying to use Macromedia Freehand. Freehand was far more elegant, especially the way the pen tool and selection tool worked. Yet Adobe people always struggled with it. I could draw pretty much anything in Freehand twice as fast as someone using Illustrator just because they thought it should work exactly like Illustrator instead of learning how it does work.

It's been a year since you upload this video, I just bought the trio a month ago and I love it yes, the jump was Affinity Photo instead of photoshop, Publisher instead of Canvas (well this not yet, I still using Canvas) this Publisher, starting makes me sick all the templates, I feel like a stupid who doesn't know how to set the size for a new project, the ruler on Publisher markings are way too small, Affinity thinks I wear magnifiers instead of eyeglasses, I center everything the best I can and it prints off center, Canvas still better.
