    I'm 61 and just starting out, I want to be able to paint portraits of my family. You make this appear so simple and straightforward; are there any tips you can give an absolute novice? My main problem with faces is proportion and angle to the light. Don't seem able to get both correct, one of them maybe. but not both.

    Best advice ever, especially the last one. I never feel that I’m done. There’s always ONE more thing to do. Your suggestion that if “another brush stroke doesn’t enhance, but just makes a change, then it’s probably time to stop” (paraphrased) will be my new mantra.

  • @migalito1955
    @migalito1955 Před 4 lety +8

    You were spot on. Your tip made a huge difference. Until I tried your method I was saving eyes, nose and mouth till the end which caused me to paint them in a very loose impressionistic manner. This lead to I could only paint males up until I tried your idea. I drew a quick sketch of a gal on a small canvas pad and within one hour I completed a wonderfully done female image that had all the soft features I had not been able to pull off prior to the change.
    Thanks a ton....

    Thank you so much. When I paint a portrait in graphite, I like to do the eyes, nose and mouth first so I can see the likeness in those areas in great detail and the person in the portrait begins to pop out in 3-D. Now that I want to paint portraits in oils, I see that most tutorials don't do that, and the chaos in the early stages makes me uncomfortable. The face is the mirror of the mind, the eyes of people reflect the desires of their heart... I guess life is a reflection of what we allow ourselves to see... eyes are very similar to paintings in that regard, if you can say it in words there's no need to paint it... eyes often times say more then words can...

If you blend it too much with too many colors it will look muddy, I have to find a way to see where my painting is going in layers instead of being able to blend everything at once. Excellent tutorial. I'm doing my first portrait from today. I've pencilled the sketch, understand my concept look. Just needed a direction on how to start, middle and end. Thank you!

    Thank you so much for this. I am a novice and as such have watched many tutorials. I just was mesmorized by this and enjoyed it entirely. Your voice is so smooth and continuously in sync with what you are doing on the paper. It was very helpful and informative and you gave an example of an opitional style.

      This is one of those things where talent isn't necessary. Time put in is the biggest factor. Everyone you think has more talent than you has probably literally hundreds of hours of more practice
