This is by far one of the most adorable stories. Basil & Shrimp are definitely Soulmates!!! Everyone deserves someone to love!!
I wish that sentiment was held by more people. I find it is easy for people to say people deserve someone to love/be loved.
But the toxicity of the internet would disagree. As soon as you are sad about not having someone and the pain of not having someone like so many others around you, you get labelled an incel for literally almost anything without proof of any wrongdoings and the internet piles on.
It sucks being alone, especially when peoples common response is to just insult you when sad.

It should be illegal And the cruel people that do, this should be locked away forever!
I'm amazed at the depth of feelings these chickens are capable of. This makes me wonder if societies have been programmed to believe animals have no feelings to enable populations to use them as food? Chicken USED TO BE one of my favorite meals. I've developed a healthy respect for those vegans who refuse to eat meat because of their concerns for ALL animals!

I think it's that historically people didn't have the luxury of getting attached to their food. In fact, it wasn't too long ago that people didn't even see typical pets (dogs, cats) in quite the same way we do now. But each generation has become a little more open, and a little more bonded to their animals, now that we aren't facing the real threat of starvation every day. Of course there are still places all over the world where even common pets are eaten every day.
I love the names. You can tell they have feelings for each other.
I wish humans had feelings for hens and roosters instead of exploiting them.

I think eating meat is okay, but here is what I believe. If you're gonna kill something for food, don't make it suffer. Make it the most humane way possible, and always thank that animal for its sacrifice because you are taking another life away for food. I don't support how slaughter houses treat their animals too

Animals that are not sentient are like coral, hydra and sea sponges
This just once again proves animals love each other the same way humans do - actually more pure than humans.
Not always. Most chickens are assholes that will literally eat each other at the first sign of weakness and almost NEVER form these kind of close social bonds if they are kept in any sort of numbers. Its why its so special when you find one that does and its even more special when you find a person that helps such sweethearts flourish. Love is a funny thing, it really does know no boundaries. As much as people like to harp on how bad humans are for the natural world humans have been able to bond with nearly every kind of animal you care to name, from lions to skunks, and even help animals form lifelong bonds that they would never form naturally in the wild. Hell, we have even gotten to the point where we routinely give cheetah's therapy dogs! In the end, it all comes down to love and valuing the individual as an individual no matter what.
And there lies the answer to the age old problem of life and living, love and compassion for all sentient beings.

What else can I say? The guy is in love! You can clearly see it in his eyes and actions. I see pairs of my outdoor cardinals that exhibit this same type of behavoir. They feed and preen one another constantly. Such a beautiful thing! There are no dumb animals.

Watching Shrimp run excitedly to Basil, and take it upon himself to watch over her and be there for her moved me to tears. Animals understand love and devotion so deeply, that I'm at a loss for words over how foolish people are for sabotaging their own relationships. Why are we so quick to betray and abandon, and animals truly cherish their own mates and families. And we dare to label animals as nothing more than mindless creatures and food sources. The sheer audacity incenses me. We can create a better world if only we just watch and learn from animals' extraordinary example. Unconditional love. Heartfelt devotion. It doesn't take a genius to see how animals have an affect on our lives with their soul-stirring stories and hearts that just want to give love. Thank you to the people of Us Farm Sanctuary for understanding and taking care of these beautiful love birds. May Shrimp and Basil live long and joyous lives together.
