Gomez is the answer to the question "I wonder if throws work at the NCAA D1 level?"
Classic gomez...hes the epitome of dangerous...he loses some bonehead matches sometimes but hes one of the few guys that truly can beat anyone at anytime
Yanni is so hard to beat because he is smart and double jointed(maybe triple!), kudos to Gomez , it was a great match!!
his arms are so long! but then he went against Rahman Amouzadkhalili and his arms looked tiny in comparison!

Love your channel man. Great breakdown. I was thinking how surprising it is Yanni was hit with this upper body throw specifically because he trains with Dake so much who is unquestionably one of the best wrestlers in the world who hits this exact move consistently. Yanni has to have felt this same sequence countless times in practice with Dake who is much bigger, stronger, and overall just better than Gomez. Just goes to show that calculating potential outcomes in any sport is much less straight forward than it may seem. So many factors. Keeps it fun!
Superb comment / spot on > we can't always depend on analysis of psst performance to determine outcome of future match. The majority if the yes, then there are those stunning exceptions and Gomez keeps us on that suspense cycle of getting beat which causes us to think he is a bit of a fluke but then he'll confidently walk out on mat against the highest ranked people and do shock & awe style wrestling

I wrestled his dad 30 yrs ago at freestyle tournament, he was 19 and was a mean tricky dude that had instincts to beat al.ost anyone with crazy risk moves producing high score leads

Hats off to Gomez but I have a feeling we’re going to see this match a couple more times and Yianni is going to be looking to make a statement.
We'll see them at it again I'm sure. Maybe even internationally at Worlds/Olympics since Gomez may be wrestling for Mexico.

In a side bodylock like that are you vulnerable to a head and arm throw? I've always heard you should avoid the side bodylock for that reason but it seems to work for Gomez
Possible, but if you can lock by the hips & keep your spine vertical (as opposed to horizontal) their chances of throwing you are a lot lower.

@@DPSBreakdowns I mentioned this somewhere else but if you ever do a breakdown on the pinch headlock I would love to see it. I've been working that position a lot and it feels like a powerful alternative to the bodylock
Does anyone know why gomez left Iowa state? I know I'm late to the party but I never heard a reason
There is a video of his mother telling about the Christmas holiday dinner where Austin told his 'all in mentality' family that he was DONE. His father was a phenomenal wrestler who only went to barely a semester at a Jr College but demolished everybody. Had a very tough background and mostly had to just work but his dad LOVED wrestling, got Austin involved young and trained him to be a 3x state champ and a highly sought after D-1 recruit. For Austin to quit would have been a very very difficult thing for both him & his father & mother because it was a deeply passionate family focus. Austin had 3 concussions at Iowa state and perhaps was killing himself cutting to 133. Obviously letting his body grow out and fill in to 149 was excellent. Austin has always had best in the nation abilities but only now is everyone recognizing it. 149 is stacked going into nationals, it'll be amazing suspense to see who makes the finals
