I swear explaining the difference between Afternoon Tea and High Tea will be my life's work.
Afternoon Tea was basically invented as a social gathering for ladies. It was done between lunch and dinner (around 8pm at the time). There would be tea (obviously), finger sandwiches, scones clotted cream and preserves, and small pastries (lighter foods). In recent times champagne has been added to the menu. It was traditionally served at low tables (think coffee tables.) It's meant to be a slow and relaxing indulgence.
High Tea is basically eating dinner. It's heavier foods. Meat pies, fish, crumpets, etc. It was meant to nourish the working class after coming home work. It was traditionally served at a dinner table or "high" table.

      Thank you!
It winds me up to no end seeing people use High Tea to describe something more luxurious than afternoon tea. The luxury comes from being able to take time in the afternoon (whilst others are at work) to enjoy tea and pastries with friends.

Maybe it's because I'm a Pastry Chef in London who makes afternoon tea, but this looks a little dissapointing. Wish they had loose leaf tea instead of teabags and everything just looked a little rushed.

Donna Manitu Is lactose intolerant and at tea (not Disney) was made my own pastries and sandwiches. It took a bit longer, but they were delicious. Disney gives you the option to list allergies and intolerances when booking so they can prepare alternatives. At home you could 100% use gluten free pastries and bread for sandwiches.

On the plus side, I’m sure people from Disney will be watching this video since it follows the videos with the experiences they paid for. $150 for dirty utensils, tea covers, and missing food isn’t up to Disney standards. For all we know, there’s little girls whose family spends a lot of money they may not be able to spare for this experience.

Since this keeps coming up in videos, macaroons = coconut stack cookies (like the Matterhorn macaroon), macarons = French sandwich cookies lol macaroon = long oooo sound, macaron = rohn (with a nasally French N if you’re trying to be fancy, or normal n sound, as in Ron Weasley, if you wanna make it easier lol)
(Also if you pronounce it how Tim did, without the second A sound in macaron, you get the name of the French president lol)

$150 for 2 people for high tea is way overpriced! Especially when a lot of the things didn't seem to even be that nice. I've had the exact same amount of food at a high tea cafe here in England, and it was a fifth of the price and everything was really well portioned and delicious. We actually had to take some of it away with us as it was too much to eat in just one go. Think the Grand Floridian may be using the whole "English Tea/High Tea" thing as a gimmick to make a ridiculous amount of money.

Technically if it was fancy there would be a spoon for each topping so there is no cross-contamination. Also, the sandwiches are meant to be eaten in one to three bits. Traditionally sweet things were served with tea because tea is usually a little bitter, way back when, the processing of tea left more tannins in the leaf(this is also why sugar and milk are added to traditional tea). The tannins in the tea are supposed to offset the sweet desserts and mild sandwiches. Its all about the type of tea you pick. I am disappointed that you were given a dirty spoon and tea cozy. That's not very Disney and would never fly in the tea house I worked in. Price seemed average. It's less expensive than in NY.

We do the tea party once or twice a year and you're right! The experience isn't what it should be. It used to be much, much better. Just so you'll know, they used to use Old Country Roses china, which is a classic and used that china's teapot, which is much larger - so you got a larger pot of tea for the same money. Now, if you're a real tea drinker, as I am, they actually CHARGE you for a second pot of tea! Now they use a second rate tea service - which shouldn't be when you're paying a first rate price. Also, you're spot on about the tea cozies - they are frayed and old looking. -- Also, the desserts aren't as good as they used to be - a few years ago, they had a HUGE fresh strawberry trifle that was absolutely delicious! right in the middle of the room where they had a station with different items on it. That's gone the way of the dodo.
Now, about the food. I think the scone is the best thing!!! But they are really skimping on the clotted cream, which is SO delicious! Here's the thing, though: you can ask for more!! and they'll bring you as much as you want. Same is true of the other condiments. Also, for those with food requirements, you just call ahead (or use the internet) and give them 24 hours notice and let them know what your needs are and they accommodate them. This is true of all Disney restaurants, BTW, which is a great thing. And these food requirements can be as simple as "I don't like xxxxx" and the chef will come out and talk to you and make sure that you get things to eat that you like.
And, I agree that since you paid the premium price for the tea experience, even though it included caviar (not my preference!), it should have included the fruit and cheese platter! Sheesh! What? Did Mickey and Minnie need the cheese?
My suggestion to everyone is if you eat here, ask to speak to the manager and then tell him/her about your feelings - good and bad. AND, I STRONGLY encourage you to go online to Disney and write them about things you feel should be addressed - like the condition of the tea cozies, the lack of choice of sandwiches, etc. They need to hear what the public thinks so they can provide a better product. Believe me when I say that Disney is very [and I do mean very] concerned about their brand. You'll have an impact. Which is a good thing!
But, for my daughter and I, it's still a treat and a fun afternoon. We order ahead of time so we can eat everything and they are lovely and kind to my daughter and so willing to accommodate us and make sure we enjoy ourselves. That's Disney!!

If they make a mistake just tell them without being karens about it. They will fix it for you. $150 is not that bad if you're eating caviar. And the covers? Are used constantly. I agree, I’m an English breakfast drinker and my sister loves earl grey. We have never had tea without milk, even when we had afternoon tea at the Ritz in London as a treat. Milk all the way

The one thing I liked about this video. This was 1 thing that sounded like a lovely indulgence, but now there is no way I would go there. Can’t say there was 1 thing about the food or service that was good & worth the money. There are no excuses for what we saw. So sorry Tim that it happened on your birthday. Thank you for sharing

I’ve had tea there several times. I’ve always had an excellent experience. Never had anyone touch my teapot spout, and my tea cover was clean. Maybe they just had a bad day? The caviar was excellent, the tea was great, and I loved the three tier service platter with all the goodies on it. While waiting for my reservation, I chilled in the lobby area of the Grand Floridian watching the piano player. It’s tradition for me to swing by there.

Fun! Totally want to try this one day, putting it on my list for a future trip. Love the sturdy restaurant version of Royal Albert china. I inherited a small fancy tea set from my great grandparents & use it at Christmas. Reminds me the teapot is hidden somewhere in our garage...

You guys are so picky, damn. My mom and I go there all the time and it’s always spotless, the food is more than enough to have us full for a long time; and we love all the sandwiches.

I've had my fair share of afternoon teas in London and Scotland, and I agree with many of the comments saying this experience was underwhelming. I could not believe the minuscule amount of clotted cream you got for your scones!! I'm a picky eater, so I often don't enjoy the sandwiches at tea. I truly think the heart of afternoon tea (especially an americanized version) is the experience and the company, so I am glad you had a good time. Thank you for sharing this experience with us!
