Due to this COVID 19, I lost my job and I am willing to enter the BIM environment as I believe it is a more stable sector rather than the exhibitions. Hi Trey! I would like to know the process and time it takes for the project to start. I am guessing you start with the architectural and MEP designs, then with their info, you start modeling the 3D, and then pass it to the construction team? How long does it take you to build a model (at least ready to start building the project)? How long does it take for the project to be ready for construction? Hope you can help me with these questions!

      @irfanullah007 Před 4 lety +2

      Exactly the same question that hit my mind while I was watching the video.. Finger Crossed and looking forward to listing from Trey. I presume the Construction cannot START unless the Building Modelling is 100% completed (Initial BIM) and then at later stages, during the execution, any changes required will be incorporated... let's see what does trey has to tell us.

    • @TreyTan
      @TreyTan  Před 4 lety +2

      Great Question Maria and Irfanullah! Correct, the 3D model has to start from Architectural and MEP and as part of the BIM team, our job is to make sure that everyone is on the same page when it comes to systems, coordinates, formatting, units, etc. Now this varies from company to company, but for us at Katerra, we DO NOT create the 3D model unless said otherwise. We would take these models from Arch, MEP, Struct, and put them together where it aligns geometrically, perform clash detection, QA/QC, create estimates for construction estimating team (per floor level, per building, per category, etc). Usually we pass it to the construction team when it is about 70% done, where clashes are almost fully resolved, no misalignments when various models are synced, and it looks ready for production. Based on my experience, the construction team mainly require 2D floor plans with dimensions (piping, electrical, furnitures, wood work, structural, etc). Your job is to assist them as much as possible in regards to printing these 2D sheets as most of them do not know how to use Revit. Depending on the project size, it could take somewhere between 4-6 months. Huge projects typically take around 8-10 months to reach 70-80% completion. Hope this helps!

    • @TreyTan
      @TreyTan  Před 4 lety +4

      @@irfanullah007 Ideally speaking, construction can start as soon as Arch is about 50% while structural is about 30% completed. However, in the real world, construction usually start when Arch is about 40% while structural is 20%. What goes first is excavation/demolition. Then concrete foundations (Structural design) as per the Architectural dimensions. Basically you could think of it as a shell with no furnishings. But to prevent delays, construction team would go first to prepare the site work.

Revit is just one of many BIM software options available on the market, and there are others that better serve certain specialties. Revit is not the only BIM software.

      @TreyTan  Před 3 lety

      No, Archicad does not work as well as Revit, which is a lot more versatile when it comes to workflows. BIM can be used to design a bridge. But a separate engineering calculation needs to be done elsewhere. Typically a structural engineer would do the calculation, then a BIM Modeler would use the right type of bridge to be placed in the model. I see your point. But the thing is if you want to fully dive into BIM alone, then you have to adapt to the various software that BIM Engineers use. ArchiCAD is great, but for Architects. Bim Engineers never touch that software. If I were you, get good at Revit, then from there you could be a BIM Engineer before becoming a BIM Manager. Hope that helps. Good luck!

      BIM is mainly focused on QA/QC the model, prevent clashes, build revit families, and coordinate with subs. Computational BIM is using plugins like dynamo to create BIM automation to help BIM Engineers work more efficiently. I would say get started in BIM first. Computational comes after. Good luck Stephanie!

      Great question. I would say eventually you would have to choose a specialization. But I do know other BIM Engineers who focus only on structural.

      Hi Christal, short answer, no you don't need to be familiar with construction site works to do well at BIM. Because you will be more software driven than construction driven. Or are basics just enough to start the BIM training program? If basic is enough, would you define the term basic? What would we have to know first hand? Please Trey 😣

    • @TreyTan

      Hey Bryan. Congrats on your recent graduation! To start off, it's best if you have basic knowledge of Revit and autoCAD - this equates to modeling your own house/building with basic features (doors, windows, floor, ceilings, furnitures, walls, etc). Once you can do that well and have understood the interface of the program, then i would say you are pretty much good to go. Of course, the training program is going to refine and improve your BIM skills. So I wouldn't be too worried about that. Good luck with your new career! Cheers =)

      Honestly, since you are already an architect you must be knowledgeable about this field of work. However, that is a great question. If I were you I would think about what type of skills you would like to acquire. For example, if you are trying to improve in terms of design, there are free videos online you could learn from. For using dynamo scripts or advanced rendering, I would check out Udemy to see if there are any courses you are interested in. It's also not that expensive - $15-20 USD per course. I also think it depends on your background. Some people I know did not have a college degree in construction, but they are working as BIM Engineers by starting out as BIM technicians and moving up the ladder. After saving up, they went on to pursue a Masters degree in Architecture. If you do not have a masters degree, pursuing it would definitely add credibility to your resume and professional career. Hope that helps! Happy holidays!
