I absolutely LOVE anything he starred on as he was one Hell of an actor! I understand he also had a very strong personal character. He openly received Sidney Portier (WAAAY before segregation was popular!) at his home and even took him under his wing. One of my all-time favorites!
    R.I.P. Richard Whitmark!

As a child in the 1950’s, going to a movie once a week on Friday night, I was always pleased to see Richard Widmark in a western. He seemed to have a presence. He exerted a gentle energy that I felt, but that I’ve never been able to ‘peg’.
A while back I purchased a DVD called (I think) ‘Night in the City’ . I was almost shocked to see that he could truly act! This must have been part of what I sensed as a child.

He was a great actor I always liked him . You know he always came across as a cynical sort of character on the screen , even when he was playing nice guy roles . He was nothing like that in real life and that's a testimony on how good an actor he actually was . What a lucky lady his wife was , a completely devoted loving husband and father . A rare gem of a man especially in Hollywood. R.I.P. dear Richards Widmark

Thanks for this wonderful video. I saw Night and the City as a kid and it stayed in the back of my mind for years. When I saw it again as a grownup, I realized that it was Widmark's performance that made the movie indelible. He always seemed more a working actor than a movie star and he left behind a master class in film acting, from his defining bad-guy roles to self-effacing character work. A couple of other terrific Widmark performances that are worth seeking out: Skip McCoy in Pickup on South Street (from Samuel Fuller) and a beautiful late-career character study as the sheriff in "A Gathering of Old Men".

Widmark was one of my most beloved actors. He had a very distinctive presence on screen. I liked him more as he got older. I remember an interview he gave towards the end of his career. He was asked if his acting style had changed over time. He replied, "Less is more." I believe he meant that it's not necessary to overthink or overact the part. I enjoyed his performances very much. He was unique. He will be missed.

Thank you for such a great bio on him. Mister Widmark was never given the credit that he deserved. He was a great actor he could pull you in you forgot you were watching the movie if you were watching him. There were a lot of great actors in his time and that was probably part of it. And unfortunately he was also type cast at the beginning of his work and forced to do a lot of contract movies. But most of them were really good even if they were just contract movies. He was a gentleman and I think he exuded the fact that he wasn't a cheat he wasn't a drinker he was honest.

Thank you Jerry...this one on Richard Widmark....one of your best! what a beautiful & tastefully done tribute to a great star, a fine actor...& as I now know...one of "Nature's Gentlemen". So refreshing, especially compared to todays Trash Kulture..Kardashians & suchlike! I loved Widmark's films...my personal fave was The Last Wagon...NOT particularly well-known, but a classic in my opinion, with spectacular scenery...outdoor photography well ahead of its time (mid 1950s, when films were really only 'starting' to go on location. This film co-starred Dick with a lovely, delicate actress called Felicia Farr...never saw her again..sad to say!
Being an Irish Australian, I cant ALWAYS 'pick up' all the dialogue...but I still find your accent AND narration very SOOTHING!

I always thought Richard was a B-movie player until last year, when I got to see his most famous films, and now I have so much more respect for him. He either played a convincing maniac in Noir movies, or the dependable ranch hand in cowboy films, and I think he is a forgotten star who needs this sort of high recognition. I love the title 'Hollywood Gentleman'. Great to hear stories about the Van Heflin's, Robert Ryans and Van Johnson's, who we never get to hear about these days, as well as the heroes like Lon Chaney Jnr and Burt Lancaster.

Always liked Widmark, caught him in a western with Robert Taylor last evening, "The Law and Jake Wade," good western. After Tommy Edo, who would have thought Widmark would end up a leading man. Thanks for the video.

Jerry thank you so much for this short biog of Richard Widmark, an actor I have always respected and enjoyed watching. I liked him a lot in an unusual film for him: Night and the City a British made film in which he played a hustler and club tout whose plans to control wrestling in London lead him into a dilemma that finishes him off. He is absolutely brilliant in it. Not a western but a film noir which I think is his best performance, even better than his debut. Keep these biogs coming Jerry!!!

Very well done, indeed. The voice of this piece sounds like stunt man turned great cowboy actor, Richard Farnsworth who passed in 2000. I love Richard Widmark. I'm a little older than his daughter. My own father died when I was only eight. I grew up watching father figures on the big screen and Richard Widmark was one of those male actors.

A thorough and great job as usual Jerry. Richard was a great actor and I loved seeing him on the screen and in television. It’s a shame all of these legends and their work are not shown and more widely distributed on the air. I was lucky to have grown up in the golden era of Hollywood. All we get today is trashy low quality, foul mouthed reality programming.

Jocelyn Carter: What a actor, husband, and friend! Mr. Widmark had a beautiful charm life, and I'm happy to hear about that because I really liked him in whatever movie I saw him in. Rest in peace to the whole family. His movies will last forever because of tv and video and oh yeah, DVDs!
