Johnny genuinely liked Charles, as much as Johnny could like anyone. Rest In Peace Johnny and Charles.

Well until CNR went on Joan Rivers first show at Fox. CNR was never on the tonight show after that.

I think CNR is a terrific storyteller. He goes into greater depth of his childhood, including some of the things he said here, in his one-man show, "Life of Reilly." What a talent! Thanks for posting this.

I agree - a great storyteller. And I would definitely recommend "Life of Reilly" ... a wonderful show, told in his own words.

I have watched "Life of Reilly" about six times now and I still get something new with each viewing while at the same time being captivated by the way he paints each story. His outbursts always make me laugh. Sometimes, I catch myself casting a famous person to play a friend. lol

Oh! That sweet, brilliant, brave, original, hilarious, irreplaceable, irresistible, odd self-invented CNR! Treasure the special ones while they’re with us, whether you know them as celebrities or as friends and family you see every day. TELL them that you treasure them. Tell them WHY, and THANK them, whether with fan mail or social media or over the lunch counter. You won’t have that chance forever.

I understand what Charles means about children not knowing things: I didn't know I needed glasses until I started school. I could see the board, but I had no idea why the teacher was always waving her hand in front of it. I couldn't see what she was writing, or even that she was writing anything, even from the first row. I remember the eye exam, and then that my glasses made the whole world different, especially television in black and white. Ironically, even though learning to read is the main goal of first grade, I still don't need glasses to do it.

Dressed to the nines derives from the same origin as the phrase: the whole nine yards (which gives it away). A bolt of cloth is 9 yards. Therefore, saying someone is dressed to the nines implies they used the entire bolt of cloth. Meaning, they are well dressed. No skimping.

A friend of mine was a steward on SwissAir many years ago, and Liz Taylor was on board and did the same: she must have been bored, and got up and served the passengers a meal, much to their surprise and delight.

"Dressed to the 9's" is because a bolt of cloth is 9 yards long. But "The whole 9 yards" refers to the length of a machine gun belt of ammo from WWI, "give them the whole 9 yards..."

If anyone's interested, the etymologies of the phrases they talk about at roughly 2:00 are that "dressed to the nines" has been traced back to the Scottish poet Robert Burns in 1757. It may come from a classical idea that the number nine represents perfection. Another possibility is that it's a misinterpretation of the phrase "to then anes", which means to the one purpose or occasion. (In English, we used to put an N on the end of 'the' before vowels, the same as we still do with a/an.) www.etymonline.com/search?q=dressed+to+the+nines
Calling a bad show a turkey goes back to at least 1927. It's show biz slang, probably chosen because turkeys had, or have, a reputation of being stupid. www.etymonline.com/search?q=turkey
One of the reasons Charles is so interesting to listen to, I think, is because he has such a rich vocabulary. It doesn't surprise me that he and Johnny wondered about the origin of certain words.
