About the Attack On Titan (Shingeki no Kyojin):
Attack on Titan (Japanese: 進撃の巨人, Hepburn: Shingeki no Kyojin, lit. "The Attack Titan") is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Hajime Isayama. It is set in a world where humanity lives inside cities surrounded by enormous walls that protect them from gigantic man-eating humanoids referred to as Titans; the story follows Eren Yeager, who vows to exterminate the Titans after a Titan brings about the destruction of his hometown and the death of his mother.
About each Anime Fighter (source Attack On Titan wikia):
Eren Yeager (エレン・イェーガー) is a former member of the Survey Corps. He is the main protagonist of Attack on Titan. He lived in Shiganshina District with his parents and adopted sister Mikasa Ackerman until the fall of Wall Maria, where he impotently witnessed his mother being eaten by a Titan. This event would lead to Eren's intense hatred towards the Titans as he swore to wipe all of them off the face of the Earth.
The Armored Titan (鎧の巨人) is one of the Nine Titans that possesses armored plates of skin across its body. It is currently in the possession of Reiner Braun. Reiner Braun (ライナー・ブラウン) is the Vice Captain of the Warrior Unit and the main protagonist of Attack on Titan from the Marleyan perspective. He is the illegitimate son of an Eldian and a Marleyan and grew up in Liberio's internment zone. Eventually, he was selected as a child to become one of Marley's Warriors. At the age of ten, he inherited the power of the Armored Titan.

I mean, in terms of humans a choke would end the fight, but a shifters Titan form doesn't have internal organs, a choke hold would've been completely useless.
This is a valid point. Narratively it wouldn't be ideal. Sometimes we get caught up too much in actual techniques and ignore the lore. We will start embracing it more in future episodes.
To be fair, the position Chad showed for the choke would’ve helped break Reiner’s armor behind his nape & ended the fight right there
@@ImaBobbyMudda Assuming we are following the positions used exactly with Reiner facing upwards Eren may not have been able to reach the nape.
But can't the choke crush the shifter in the nape? Maybe not for the armored titan since he's armored though.
And Reiner's neck is decently armored so no way to crush him inside the armored titans nape

true but eren learning jiu-jitsu from a flashback is hilarious when you think about it
It's even better because he learned the moves from a weaker opponent who had previously bested him. It just keeps a nice consistency
@Jack Marsden Realistically though, reiner should have won. Considering he was a child soldier and learned martial arts with the warriors. Not to mention, Reiner is a lot stronger and has more experience. But, I really wonder if bertholdt had the intent to kill, had the armored titan, and fought eren how would it play out?
@@Favour135 Did you miss the part where it's explained that Reiner actually sucked during his training, was the worst candidate, but was picked to be the Armored Titan because one of his friends recommended him over his brother whom he wanted to protect? On top of that, Eren is also a child soldier (he started a little later but was still around 12, I believe?) with a few years of probably even harder training than the Warriors. The Recruits had hand to hand combat training plus they had to have the strenght to use the ODM gear (which requires immense core strenght).
@@adreak9868 you do realize that even though reiner was the worse of the candidates he was still better than your average child and many other warrior candidates because there were more than the candidates we saw. Also reiner went through the exact same training even in the walls so reineer still had far greater training.

i agree. great call back to show eren's growth in the show.

The show is realistic with everything but the elements it introduces. Yes, people can turn into a titan, but they explain the rules of that and besides that (and the other rules the anime establishes), their world is the same as ours. Even regular anime inconsistencies are avoided, all character are physically proportional, they have eyes and hair of possible colours (unlike shows with purple eyed and blue haired characters), characters without titan abilities don't get plot armour and get saved by stupid bullshit and every hit feels like it has the impact on the receiver that it should

They should do both fights, the one in the Forest and the one in Stohess.
@@clemoski9007 "Fighting is your whole life" - Eren about annie
As Jacob Mattingly pointed out, Shifter Titans are essentially their human upper body surrounded by flesh, located in the nape of the Titan body's neck. The rest of them is just super dense muscle and bone. And Armored Titan's special ability is that it's covered in super hard, metallic armor. He even has an Optimus Prime style mouth plate that can cover his face for added defense. So Eren was putting more focus on the armbar so he could shatter that armor as we saw and get to the juicy meat underneath. Love you guys videos all the time and keep up the good work.
The armor is more bony
the armor is not metal its like a more advance titan hardening ability but all around the body and permanent(unless he sheds it off)
You know what angers me?
In the manga the anti-titan rounds could not pierce Reiner's armor but in the anime they do
The only reason why the thunder spears were able to break Reiner's armor is because the survey corps put 12 thunder spears into the gaps between the armor.
@@Raccon_Detective. You know what else angers us? The fact that the armor becomes completely useless

TBF, they cut out alla my complaints. But thanks for the support, man. Martial arts 4Life.
a cool detail that this video made me realize is how Eren avoided chokes most of the time and went for joint locks, which as the video points out is typically sub optimal but as AoT lore states Titans are basically perpetual motion machines that don't need stuff like food or air so chokes in this case are the sub optimal option while locks are the optimal option due to Titans having relatively fragile bodies (though the story kinda forgets that half the time)
Well they have bodies that are significantly more resistant than those of humans, but are no match for their own strength and weight.
Fun fact! Eren's fight style is based on Takanori Gomi.
The writer said Gomi was a big inspiration, said he represented the heart of a fighter through his style or something like that (chrome translate might be shit).

It makes sense he didn't go for the choke since you can't choke out a titan. He wanted to disable the armored titan to be able to eat him or something
I think the Titan equivalent would be breaking the spine right near the nape, so it seems like it would work honestly
Yes but shifter are covered by the nape off the Titan how does oxygen come in if Titans don’t breath? Where is the oxygen coming from and if the choke is done right he could crush his nape while choking him no hate just a question
One of the reasons the fight is relatively accurate for anime is because the creator is a big fan of martial arts. Even the titans are based on fighters with Eren’s titan being based on of Yushin Okami, a UFC fighter and the Armored Titan is based off of Brock Lesner, a WWE wrestler

When eren tried the guillotine he was trying to break the armor around the nape so they could capture reiner (armored titan) but this channel is awesome I love the anime videos
I was so hyped for this reaction, and it delivered. I just wanted to make a suggestion about Eren's triangle choke. I trust Chad's expertise that the triangle choke should primarily prioritize the choke over the joint break to end the fight, but perhaps another way to think of this fight was that maybe Eren didn't think that choking out the Armored Titan was possible. Given his reinforced body and a very stubby neck that's at least partially covered by plates, there may just have been no comfortable leverage at that angle. So, Eren's goal the whole fight was to weaken the Armored Titan, hence intentionally threatening to crack the right arm's plating via triangle, then transitioning to armbar to break it. This continues to when Eren goes into the guillotine and cracks the plating on the Armored Titan's back, opening up vulnerabilities for other humans to attack, though at that point it seemed like Eren was also going to break his neck.
It's unclear how different a Titan's anatomy may be, so we actually don't know if choking out a Titan is possible. They definitely breathe given the steam they breathe out sometimes and their ability to produce sound, but do they even have a carotid? No need for blood to go to the brain if the brain is a tiny person on the back of a Titan's neck, right?. Eren got the closest to demonstrating a choke-out, but he just gets too angry and feral so we'll never quite know lol. Just food for thought.
P.S. I imagine sometime down the line a The Raid reaction will happen? :))
Solid breakdown do the anatomy. This is part of the reason fighter like Yoel Romero would be harder to chock. The position of the head to neck leaves little room for comfortable leverage like you’ve said but anatomy like shoulders built or placed close tot he head make even securing the choke difficult
On the topic of Titans having brains, it's shown in a layer season that Shifters have brains in Titan form, though I assume regular Titans may or may not. I think so tho, since the first thought that came to my mind was Ymir and how she became a shifter before the start of the series
4:54 In a real fight, yes, you should priorize to end the fight. But 1 things.
1. Titans dont get choke. Their only weak point is their back neck. So getting choke its a useless option in this case.

I don't remember them having a fight scene on the manga, but Tokita Ohma vs Imai Cosmo would be a great fighting reference if it would be animated on the next part.
@@9inchdeck463 gaolang and cosmo did not fight, I am talking about there respective different fights like cosmo vs adam and gaolang vs Kaneda
@@logan607 Iirc no. Gaolang does Muay Thai and Boxing, Imai does bjj I think.
I also like how in the fights they actively showed the experience of Eren . He was still learning the best application of the moves and developing techniques so he was making mistakes in the fights
Can you next breakdown female titan vs. eren? It's entertaining and fun to learn martial arts. Thank you.
I think the thing I love most about these videos is the very casual and cheerful voice you describe all this in. It's like a cooking tutorial or a nice audiobook. In the most pleasant voice ever: "And now I'm going to break the joint!"
lmao that's one way to put it.
Interestingly enough, Annie employed the Kata-Gatame in the exact way you guys demonstrated during her second spar with Eren when they were doing Bayonet training in a flashback. I can only assume the reason Eren didn't do it right here is because A) He forgot that detail (which is normal), or B) Because of how differently Titan-shifter bodies work, there's no guarantee a choke would've had any effect. So he went straight to smashing, because that's how he's been able to successfully kill Titans in the past. Same with the triangle. Since the armor protects the weakpoint of his enemy, Eren has to find other ways to damage/disable/destroy his target by applying the leverage in such a way that it breaks apart the armor and literally tears the guy apart. This kind of makes me curious about how well or what modifications you might need to make to attacks like the triangle if you're fighting somebody in bulky, impact-resistant armor (like riot gear or some equivalent)?
... I think i'm gonna have to get the boys together to play around with this idea someday.
"This kind of makes me curious about how well or what modifications you might need to make to attacks like the triangle if you're fighting somebody in bulky, impact-resistant armor" This is a great point we will discuss in future breakdowns.
I always come back to this video every time I rewatch that fight
Much appreciated! What other AoT fight scenes would you like to see us breakdown next?

@@servillian2363 True. TGOH did have martial arts at start but after that it was all supernatural.

This just gives me a deeper appreciation for the show. It shows the writers knowledge of how a fight work and shows Erens lack of experience. Very well done.
