- Hello music Lovers! Welcome to episode 5 of The Woodshed! due to the tons of feedback and requests, this episode is gonna start you on the path of country Telecaster, chicken pickin, Brent Mason inspired playing. We are gonna jump in and tackle the fundamentals of right hand picking, hybrid playing, finger pluckin, and string popping. We are gonna look at the basic harmonic outline and see what note alterations in the major scale will give you that delicious southern fried redneck sound. From there we get into some basic bends and lastly we get some double stop fundamentals. This is NOT a "here is lick A, B, C" this lesson is meant to give you a good foundation of tele chicken basics. Then we are gonna talk about how to take your own playing and licks you already use, and how to twist them to give them a southern sound. So put down that dual humbucker shredder guitar and go grab ole Pep Pep's telecaster, its time to take walk on the wirey side!! Thanks for all the comments, love and support. Let me know below what you'd like to see in future episodes. Hope you guys enjoy this! Be sure to jump over to Andywoodmusic.com for more lessons, gear, dates, and merch. Cheers!

First of all, thank you the lesson. Secondly, thanks for calling us "kids". I'm old enough to be your father and it brings joy to have somebody can me a kid because my brain thinks I'm a kid.
All this stuff was Greek to me not long ago, even after playing for 38ish years. You made it fun to learn.
Andy is one of those rare combinations of being an incredibly consummate player as well as a highly gifted teacher.
Thank you for being so generous with your time and knowledge. Keep up the great content.
What a fuckin guy man aswell as a multi instrumental genius
I can't for the life of me understand how 3 people gave this incredibly good lesson a thumbs down Andy. It's free, it's absolutely top class, and it's extremely educational for anyone interested in adding "chicken pickin" to their guitar playing! I'll have to have a word with Brent Mason, Albert Lee and Dan Huff! :-) Keep on doing what you do - I'm sure all your subscribers would agree that you are both first-class and very classy.
Must have been the metal gods
Must have been wanting licks and not the theory so they could build their own sound.
They wanted the video to last longer then 26mins... lol
You can't understand... no need to say anymore
Funny you say that, the other day I found out I had disliked a video by accident and found out about it only a couple weeks after. It may just be an accident.
I love that you broke down the major scale and pointed out the notes and nuances that make things sound country. Until that I couldn't tell you what it is but I know it when I hear it. I also love that you're not just teaching licks but instead showing why and how the notes work together. I mean licks are great and all but if you don't know where they come from and why they work you just know a lick, you are teaching a style. Great stuff I will definitely be working on these concepts.
This video is EXACTLY what I needed. Been playing for 25 years. Never could find that "gateway drug" to country cluckin and this approach has NAILED IT! Thumbs up and subscribed!! Thank you sir!
30 year rock player, this is a perfect stepping stone to some cool picking techniques, thank you.
Listened to this in 3 sessions and really enjoyed taking my time. Thanks Rick
Thank you Andy Wood for this lesson! I love this style and been working on it the last 10yrs using your approach. The thing I find fascinating is each reknown country guitar players interpretation of all those things and the nuances that make up the sound and style. Each wonderful, and each slightly different. Coming from the 60's and 70's, information like this back then and the tools we have today to make it known would have changed the landacape in major ways. We really have far less excuses to NOT BE really smoking guitarists. I know you insist on one hand you're not here to spoon feed, but to me personally your generosity of easy to follow instruction is off the hook, and I thank you profusely for it. You love what you do and it shows. Excellence!!!!!!!
"Minor or Major? Why not both?let's treat ourselves? " Dude I like your style, now I'm a fan 👏👏👏👏
I have been a rock and blues player for 40 years. I always said this country playing is the best I've ever heard. I too loved some 90s country and Brent. I have been trying to learn it, but never could get those half steps in place. Now I know, when you explained by intervals, my brain exploded. Thank you. I have learned more in 20 minutes than in 6 months.
This is such a great lesson. Being a German, I dig that southern accent. Thanks a lot sir
Thank god.. I have had a hell of a time finding someone that explains the right hand. Thanks man!
Holy hell man, that was one hell of a lesson. I think it was intermediate and right in the pocket, plus you talk in intervals. That’s all I need. Cheers man, perfection. Let’s get to cluckin
Just throwing this out there i only recently found you on youtube in my constant search for what to play and what to learn and the whole shock of how talented you are is making me wanna keep on playin. Your not stuck on genres you just seem to play everything. Please keep the content comin for those of us tryin to find ourselves on the instrument. God bless.
In lock down and just spent an excellent 26 minutes listening and learning from Andy. Back later for more, brilliant..
Great lesson! Thanks, I've been playing guitar for 47 years and just learned more today than I've learned in the last couple years... thanks!
This is great. For players who are new to this style of playing and those who have some experience under their belt. It's always good to have a pro take us back and revisit the fundamentals. Sometimes we get moving along too quickly and skip some critical basics. Plus Andy, there is plenty of cool chops in your demonstrations here to grow from throughout this weeks Woodshed.
I love that you teach the approach versus specific note for note licks. Thanks again for this channel.
This is BY FAR the best guitar lesson I've ever seen on CZcams!
I agree. For years I've been trying to figure out what makes country sound country and your teaching style brought is out for me. Thanks
The world certainly needs more guitar teachers teaching concepts rather than licks. Just learning licks and tabs is what held my guitar playing back until recently when I decided to start taking the instrument seriously.
Super thanks for opening the gates to the country curious player that I am. You boiled it down with everything I was searching for: references, techniques&concepts building on already acquired guitar foundations for the experienced but non-country guy. You the man 🙏
This video was all kinds of awesome…. Thank you god’s of the CZcams algorithms for suggesting this to me. You now have a new fan, subscriber, and student here!
This may be the best YT video lesson I’ve ever heard. Cool.
I love all videos that encourage using the middle finger more often
FFS!! Andy is fantastic!!! I absolutely love the scale/passing note breakdown. Thank you so much Andy for this pure gold you are sharing. Beautiful
Andy about 10 minutes in it all clicked. You are truely an oustanding teacher. Subscribed
I've been playing for quite awhile...doing the stuff you are showing without even knowing what or why I was doing it. This helped me understand and opened up my mind to more...you have a new follower...
Thanks for this
Gold mine of guitar knowledge. Thank you!
Absolutely love the way you put things. You take the mystery out of it in a way that is so easy to understand. Thank you Andy!!
Simple and straight to the point.
Deconstructed and clear.
Love it!!!
So, for me being the age of 56, drummer of 48 years, I took up guitar for something new. I'm only a few years into it and struggling with the shapes and confusing modes. I just listen to van Halen licks and blues stuff. So Last night I was messing around and decided that I should try playing with no pick and I found your instructional video. Thanks, my fingers have calluses but are kind of raw today. Regards; Bruce
Get some Bruce!
Finding the octaves helped me a ton, and then you can immediately find the 5th
One of the best taught classes I have seen. You have a natural ability to teach so please keep the videos coming!
I play drums in a doom metal band and started playing guitar at home for myself last summer. I’m now here to start learnin how to chicken pick. Thank you for the lesson

All those names are great ones, but Andy I believe you are the very best.
Wow! Just Wow! This is one of the best lessons I've ever seen and I've seen thousands!!!
Great stuff! I wish this had been out there when I started. I had to learn all of this stuff the hard way - by listening to recordings and watching people play! This is presented in a very easy-to-learn, humble, professional way - excellent teacher!
I'm stoked brother, thank you!
Brilliant lesson this. I just stumbled across it. I was looking at something else, scribed down and came across this.
Thank heavens I did that.
All I got to say is THANK YOU BROTHER this is what I needed to see got to say you're the best at teaching this stuff that I've have seen to date. I'm an old blues rockr metal head. Always loved this stuff never thought I could play it thanks again Andy
ANDY, you are fabulous. I cannot understand how nice your attitude and musical understanding is. It is fantastic to look at your videos. Your point is - I show and you learn. Then apply it. Excellent stuff!
Johnny Hiland. BEAST of a player.
I’m not much of a country player but I know enough to end up in a country band somehow and these lessons make my life way easier. It’s just a different way to play licks we probably already do.
Andy, your tone and playing are impeccable. Really inspirational stuff
One of the best explanations. Great lesson.

Im real good at what I do but there’s always something to learn.

Dude! this is an amazing lesson. You take the sting out of the theory and provide a really strighforward apparch to understaning the harmony. Thank you so much.
Your explanations and playing has changed how I look at my guitar. Thank you for what you do, it's badass! So are you, big bro!
