Plenty of metal drummers can play faster and more technical, but not with his groove. That alone makes Dave’s playing stand out and one of the all time greats.
His fills are also very unique and easy to recognize.
@@hugolafhugolaf exactly! Dave's groove and "no click - stay a little ahead of the band" style is one thing.
BUT THOSE FUCKING FILLS!!! Imagine how dull Reign In Blood would be without them. It's what separated Slayer from Sodom, early Kreator, early Sepultura etc.
I love Gene and Dave, and Gene can probably play more things (+ had more bands) - but man, Dave's fills are something else.
Good comment with a balanced view. I get annoyed with Uber-fanboys who insist he’s “better” than everyone. However, I love him. It’s all about his feel and groove. An absolute legend.
Legend... His drumming swings like no other thrash / metal drummer I've ever heard!

Thanks Dave for your awesome contribution to metal drumming-guys like you, Vinnie Paul, Iggor Cavelara and John Tempesta had a HUGE influence on me! I still play 2 bass drums without triggers and just completed my set of Paiste Rudes! Thanks again Dave👍🤘👍🤘

I met Dave once. He's a mild mannered really nice guy. He lets his drums do the talking. Most rockers aren't what they look to be

I have a pair of 15" RUDE hats I've ordered back in 2004 - Simply the best hats I've ever played, absolutely perfect if you use just a pair of overheads (no hi hat mic) - they cut perfectly when needed, very easy to play and it's like driving a Bi-Turbo V12 - the power is always there when you need it, zero lag when you punch it. 🤘🏻
I have just joined the Paiste family. So keen, their product seems so excellent, and consistent!

I started playing Paiste in the early 80's, at that time, believe it or not, our public school system in Norfolk, Va, bought them for our music programs.
My best friend at the time was the result of a marriage of two folks from the Virginia Philharmonic, and was playing a Leedy set with Zildjians, which were the benchmark for the time.
Codswallop.
It took many years, but I play Paiste cymbals exclusively (other than a nice, well priced Meinl or wuhan).
Paiste cymbals are sonically, tonally, engineered to be compatible with each other, regardless of price.
The Z's gave into market demands, and hammer out anything short of a tin can lid.

Dave Lombardo’s versatility, and musicianship are what drives any band he’s in. The guy is a monster. He can make any band sound amazing. No way a Kerry King can branch out and be in anything other than Slayer.

Slayer, Fantômas, Suicidal Tendencies, Testament... for sure, but NO ONE never tells about Grip Inc., the band, HIS band litterally along with Waldemar and Gus, in which he shined and truly reached the highest peak in his drumming (imho) in all their 4 albums, which are 4 masterpieces of modern and grooving thrash. RIP our friend Gus.

This man is the reason why I love the RUDE crash/rides and Novo Chinas. Snagged a 16" RUDE CR, a 2OO2 18" Novo, a 3OOO RUDE 19" CR and a 3OOO 20" Novo over the last 7 years, the latter two have 1986 serial numbers. eBay and FB marketplace finally helped me get my variation of Dave and Charlie Benante's cymbal setups at last!
Yeah, I have an 18" Rude Novo China. I actually bought the 18" 2002 Novo China, and it didn't have enough attack for what I play (extreme metal).

Mr. Lombardo is at it again! He was really good on The Gathering for sure, but it was Mr.Hoglan who was with the band all the latest years, so I can't but wonder what happened there..?
Gene is very in-demand, and had multiple projects which would've conflicted with Testament's schedule. So instead of postponing one or the other (which, after two years of forced downtime, no band wants to do), they decided to part ways amicably and Dave rang Chuck Billy and asked if he would be interested in him filling the vacancy.
Gene probably decided that he had to write the new Dark Angel album himself, if it was ever gonna be released, so he made the sacrifice of leaving Testament for the sake of the starving Dark Angel fans.
Seriously though, how slow are Eric, Mike & Jim at writing while Gene's been touring since 2016? xD

Everything is expensive in Québec City. But we'll have a 4-billion$ tramway that no one will use, so all of our problems will magically go away.
