▸ Who Is Batman: Batman is a superhero appearing in American comic books published by DC Comics. The character was created by artist Bob Kane and writer Bill Finger, and debuted in the 27th issue of the comic book Detective Comics on March 30, 1939. In the DC Universe continuity, Batman is the alias of Bruce Wayne, a wealthy American playboy, philanthropist, and industrialist who resides in Gotham City. Batman's origin story features him swearing vengeance against criminals after witnessing the murder of his parents Thomas and Martha as a child, a vendetta tempered with the ideal of justice. He trains himself physically and intellectually, crafts a bat-inspired persona, and monitors the Gotham streets at night. Kane, Finger, and other creators accompanied Batman with supporting characters, including his sidekicks Robin and Batgirl; allies Alfred Pennyworth, James Gordon, and Catwoman; and foes such as the Penguin, the Riddler, Two-Face, and his archenemy, the Joker.
Kane conceived Batman in early 1939 to capitalize on the popularity of DC's Superman; although Kane frequently claimed sole creation credit, Finger substantially developed the concept from a generic superhero into something more bat-like. The character received his own spin-off publication, Batman, in 1940. Batman was originally introduced as a ruthless vigilante who frequently killed or maimed criminals, but evolved into a character with a stringent moral code and strong sense of justice. Unlike most superheroes, Batman does not possess any superpowers, instead relying on his intellect, fighting skills, and wealth. The 1960s Batman television series used a camp aesthetic, which continued to be associated with the character for years after the show ended. Various creators worked to return the character to his darker roots in the 1970s and 1980s, culminating with the 1986 miniseries The Dark Knight Returns by Frank Miller.
DC has featured Batman in many comic books, including comics published under its imprints such as Vertigo and Black Label. The longest-running Batman comic, Detective Comics, is the longest-running comic book in the United States. Batman is frequently depicted alongside other DC superheroes, such as Superman and Wonder Woman, as a member of organizations such as the Justice League and the Outsiders. In addition to Bruce Wayne, other characters have taken on the Batman persona on different occasions, such as Jean-Paul Valley / Azrael in the 1993-1994 "Knightfall" story arc; Dick Grayson, the first Robin, from 2009 to 2011; and Jace Fox, son of Wayne's ally Lucius, as of 2021. DC has also published comics featuring alternate versions of Batman, including the incarnation seen in The Dark Knight Returns and its successors, the incarnation from the Flashpoint (2011) event, and numerous interpretations from Elseworlds stories.

There are tons of stories that deal with Joker messing with Bruce Wayne or invading Wayne Manor or the Bat Cave, he just doesn't care for Bruce.

BUT the joker isn't after Bruce Wayne, he wants to break the Batman, he wants batman to lose it and kill him. If Bruce Wayne kills the Joker, what fun is that? Right? So the Joker plays this game.

I think the most interesting moment from this issue was how the bad guys react. You find out they actually have a safe room in case of joker attacks.

Keep in mind that Batman, as a character, was inspired by Sherlock Holmes novels. Over the years the gradual slide towards a more action-orientated approach to comics has caused Batman to be dumbed down to a simple brawler who uses gadgets. The stories do not reflect his earlier style of being over-the-top crime dramas where he was solving crimes as a master detective. Assuming that DC doesn't just abandon this return to his roots the next few years may produce some very memorable and refreshing stories for the Dark Knight.

they kinda did that already, probably more than once, but most notably when he was in caveman times and had to improvise and fashion his own primitive "gadgets" and weapons.

Definitely feels like Batman is going to be rebuilding who he is from the ground up. Maybe focusing more on staying hidden, less of a symbol, and more of a shadowy force. He can't go head-on with the Joker and it's a chance to see Batman trying to de-escalate the situation than keep hammering at it.
That ending song sounds like one of those comedy scenes where the main character walks around town, not giving a crap about anything, socially awkward and everyone is looking at him as if he is trash.

I've read a lot of Joker vs Batman stories. And for the first time in a longtime, I can honestly say I'm SCARED for Batman. Usually i'm like "Batman's got this. You know how many times he's fought Joker?" but this time, it just hits different. Like i feel like Batman is just at the end of his rope.

This run of Batman has been superb. I like how despite how often it's the Joker who is the big bad of the storyline they keep it fresh, I never imagine a story line where the Joker manages to get a hold of all of Batmans assets. Dark Designs has been a very good storyline and Joker War is off on a good ass start.

Beyond omega level batman with no money and prep time
This is interesting. People always said Batman's "superpower" is money. Now we get to see what he can do once his money is gone. Not only that, all his gadgets are seized too. It's looking like it's gonna be Batman Year One except with all his knowledge and experience under his belt.
I'm all for this and hopefully there's no cheesy ending or some controversial middle finger to the face of the fans. This has the potential to be one of the best Batman stories of all time

I love the point that Rob talks about Batman causing the villains to become desperate and up their games.
What I'm really hoping happens is that Bruce tries to get all the bat family together, and I mean all of them. Nightwing, Robin, Drake, Batwoman, Orphan, Spoiler, Bluebird, Batwing, Signal, all of them. Getting together and make a plan, one that combines all of their individual skills in takes Joker down.
And maybe Harley shows up to help

That whole "escalation" thing is exactly why batman doesn't allow other heroes in gotham city, at least in the animated series, because he knows once they come in the villains will step it up too

In my opinion, it’s no where near Batman’s fault for the rise in crime by meeting crime with overly effective methods. He found ways to take care of crime more effectively and that shouldn’t be looked at with blame.

A better Batman is one who doesn't depend upon his "toys". The clue is in that monologue from Joker where he basically highlights the extreme disparity between the resources available to them both. Bruce had advanced tech, billions of dollars and allies but the Joker never had any of that. The kicker here is that Bruce is going to defeat Joker despite having no more resources than Joker normally does. It is the ultimate humiliation because it shows that if the Joker loses despite having all of the advantages that Batman had over the years while Bruce has all of the disadvantages that Joker did then there was no excuse for why the Joker always lost other than his own deficiencies. Bruce would be proven to just be smarter and more capable regardless of the circumstances.
I quite like this to be honest, because this gets back to the roots of Batman as a character. DC has been steadily pushing him towards being a techno-gimmicky, brawling superhero and downplaying his intelligence and experience as a detective. What always made him interesting to me as a character was never his gadgets or martial skills, but how he used to outsmart his opponent rather than just beating people to a pulp with his fists.
Some day, Rob, you are going to have a kid. When your child grows, you will realize there are two types of situations. One is fancy(like, what do you fancy?) and one is core (like, This is me.)
Most criminality falls under fancy. These are the things that are done for some other reason. A toddler steals a toy because they want to be as happy as the kid they stole it from, and the toy is just a means to that end. You can tell because the next toy gets stolen and the first one gets dropped.
Those criminals see increased force and they suddenly realize the risk isnt worth the reward. They stop.
The core is what you worry about. That's why the Joker is so terrifying. It isnt really his chaos, because he really isnt chaotic. The Joker is summed up best in TDK. "I'm just a dog chasing cars."
Cars cause dogs to react on instinct. Something running away.
No matter how hard you push the Joker, his core remains, so HE and others like him will get desperate. Incidentally, the people who are living off of crime are also going to react the same way, since it is their livelihoods.
Understanding Core and Fancy is how you raise a kid right. They can both be altered, but fancy is a spoon to the hand fix and core requires complete and total dedication on your part.
I think Batman is eventually going to team up with all his non-joker rogues gallery to take down Joker

Batman's focus has always been on stopping whatever scheme one of his many foes had in mind- now, it's time for him to become a hunter of evil, rather than someone who simply tries to prevent it. This is a great story arc so far- can't wait to see how it turns out.

It would seem to me that Batman... the ultimate hero of contingency planning... would have a contingency plan for this... that is, money stored away, a secondary batcave ( like the bat-bunkers) and other contingency bat-tools.

I'm pretty sure a good chunk of Batman's villains weren't created by him. Literally the only one I can think of would be the Penguin. Killer Croc? Two-Face maybe? I don't know the origins.
The Joker was definitely created by Batman, which is just perfect because he won't kill and so everything the Joker does is even more of Bruce's fault.
