Call of Juarez: Gunslinger is a first-person shooter set in a western milieu developed by Techland and originally published by Ubisoft. It was released for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360 in May 2013 via Steam, UPlay, the PlayStation Store, and Xbox Live Arcade. In December 2019, it was ported to the Nintendo Switch. It is the fourth game in the Call of Juarez series, although narratively, it is unrelated to the three previous titles (Call of Juarez, Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood, and Call of Juarez: The Cartel).
The game tells the story of Silas Greaves, a bounty hunter in the American West during the second half of the 19th century. Telling his story to a group of saloon patrons in 1910, Silas's increasingly grandiose and difficult to believe tales find him hunting Roscoe "Rustling Bob" Bryant, as he either teams up with or squares off against Wild West legends such as Billy the Kid, Pat Garrett, Newman Haynes Clanton, Johnny Ringo, Curly Bill Brocius, Henry Plummer, John Wesley Hardin, a Chiricahua war party, the Dalton Gang, George Curry, Kid Curry, Butch Cassidy, the Sundance Kid, Jesse James, and Frank James.
After The Cartel changed the series' setting from the Wild West to the modern-day, Gunslinger returned the series to a western milieu. In making the game, the designers were very much trying to redeem the reputation of the Call of Juarez brand after the critically reviled and commercially unsuccessful The Cartel. In returning to the Wild West setting of the first two games in the series, the designers decided to focus on the importance of storytelling in myth-making. Basing the narrative structure on Bastion, they aimed to use the game's unreliable narrator to examine the fine line between fact and fiction in establishing the legends of some of the West's best-known figures.
Gunslinger received predominately positive reviews, with critics praising the storytelling, the fast-paced arcade-style shooting mechanics, the graphics, the voice acting, and the humor. Many also felt that the game was good enough to erase the memories of The Cartel. Criticisms focused on a predictable ending and shallow boss battles. The Switch port also received generally positive reviews and was praised for its fidelity to the original, although some critics took issue with the controls. The game was a commercial success, becoming Ubisoft's second best selling digital-only title of 2013, after Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon.

Hello billy
Hey Jayvee, there's someone impersonating you here in the comments. Just to let you know
Play the whole series I need to know I'm missing
this game is so sick. nice simple mechanics, beautiful art, pure gameplay. a real gem
Agreed
definitely
💯💯
This game is fantastic, the story telling and how it ties into gameplay..How the main character remembers things incorrectly, then corrects himself and the game changes. Just great. Need more of this.
I loved the punch every single gun had
I played the hell out of one of the Juarez games and it was surprising how good it was. It was also a very very long time ago so maybe I'm remembering wrong.
"who came up with these names for this game" lmfao Jayvee, they're real historic people
lmfao they sound so ridiculous with this game's comic book style i legit thought they were fake 🤠
I’m glad someone said it lol
And Silas Greaves was heavily inspired by Frank "Pistol Pete" Eaton.
I grew up in Dodge City…the Wild West capital. I heard lots of these names growing up haha
@@AdaptiveFeedback ye i remember Paul "Ass cheek" McGee
My favourite line in the entire game is "Bob, you failed to realise that in this Call of Juarez I'm the Gunslinger"
Unironically this game has some great quotes
This, Red Dead Redemption and Gun always reminds me that there is not nearly enough wild west games
Have you tried Desperado? I know it isn't an FPS but the theme is pretty good. Hard West and two are also good if you don't mind X-Com-like games.
@@GothicDragonX never played it, I'm gonna give this a try
there is also cowboys and aliens
There’s fallout new vegas
My brother couldn't get enough of gun of course i was too stupid to be able to play it but this game was incredible
This game is so good, we need more games with this type of storytelling
@Crypto Arnold Metro 2033 is not told by an unreliable narrator for the most part.
Sad that this never quite managed to become a more well known franchise of western games, the only one today we have is rdr. This was the latests CoJ and by the looks of it the last one,it's over 9 years since this was released
Anyone else notice that during the canyon ambush, when he said he was running low on ammo, his bullets in reserve went from like 48 down to 8? I always forget just how much fun this game was!
The names of the people are real, they are historic figures. The narrator though is what's referred to as an unreliable narrator. He's talking about historic events, but you don't know what's true and what isn't. The reason for it becomes clear at the end though. This was a great game.
Yes I remember !
Spoilers: It's all a bait
Hahaha I died laughing watching this! Jayvee's southern imitation was too hilarious! 😂🤠
11:53 - "These are not real people." You underestimate how silly real life is.
oh god they are real
@@jayveeeee I guess you've never watched Wyatt Earp or Tombstone?
When he said that, I was like "they aren't?" Although to be fair I believe Billy the Kid was not the same decade
@@jpisback Well you'd be as wrong as jayvee then. Billy the Kid died on July 14th, 1881 and Curly Bill Brocius died on March 24, 1882.
@@commissarcardsharp right on
Dude, the storytelling in this game is so well done it made me genuinely laugh out loud a few times which is not that common for me. Great game, one of the few in recent times that I actually played to the very end without feeling bored or exhausted.
15:48 Fun fact almost every person that gets named in this game was actually a real outlaw. Curly Billy Brocius aka William Brocius.
Pretty sure the only people that get named that arent real are Juarez and Ray and Thomas McCall in one of the nuggets of truth
I played it last year, I liked the game. The game has this frivolous vibe. I recommend this game to fans of westerns.
This game is underrated, the story telling is great! wish more games had this
Gunslinger is one of my fave shooters, when you get all the skills you turn into a literal god killer the Shotgun may as well be a BFG
Played through it all for like the 6th time in one day less than 10 days ago. What a game, man.
And yes, Curly Bill Brocius, Johnny Ringo, Old Man Clanton, and all the others really did exist.
The loading screen/cinematic or whatever it's called reminds me so much of the Witcher 3. That's pretty cool!
Can we take a minute to appreciate that bens voice actor is the same dude who voiced Ben 10s uncle in the old animated show.
I remember me and my friend found this game one night and didn't even play it but spent the entire night laughing at the name
Did you know you can press the reload button at the right time to load the bullets faster? Good stuff. The action missions (or idk they're called in English, I forgot) with max upgrades can get very intense if you're good, with almost no downtime, just running from a fight to a fight constantly. Had a combo of 80 or so once.
You need to buy the skill to reload faster
It has active reload a la Gears of War? Lmao.
This game is a really fun, linear experience! The story is entertaining and the levels are varied enough that it never feels repetitive.
Got it for free on Steam a few months back and had an abs blast. I wish there were more games like this.
Yeah and all these names are real. Watch the movie Tombstone and you'll understand. Keep up the good work!
oh shit they are real!!! thanks dude :)
Tombstone ain't the only one, for billy the kid you can watch young guns, and for Butch Cassidy and the Sundance kid, you can watch, well, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance kid
or just read history books and the Nuggets of truth in this game.
This game is genuinely fantastic. I bought it on a whim years ago during a summer sale. Did not regret it! Played it for like a week straight, just trying to beat my scores and trying different styles of gameplay.
So fun.
I have all of these games in the series. Gunslinger is one I go to again and again for some good western arcade action. A winner in my book.
This is one of them random gems that i reinstall and play through again every year or so, its so damn fun
11:53 those are actually real people and »The Cowboys« were a real thing. They were the ones challenging the Earp-Brothers, which you might've heard og
I loved this game when I was little, played it all the time
Sometimes i didnt been able to spot the enemy. They been like Chameleons in the game.
i literally play this game on repeat like every month or so, it's so fun with the arcade mode! and fun fact, when you play NG+ it actually tells you Silas' thoughts in the loading screen, like how he knows where Bob is all this time. it's a really fun game because it is a huge parody of the western genre and it does it in such a funny way, and you think that Silas is just making up all these claims because we all know who really killed these famous gunslingers, yet at the end there's a big twist that hints towards that he told the truth all along.
Easily one of my favourite games I've ever played. The story revolving around the cost of revenge and how it incorporates story and gameplay is fantastic.
One of the few games I've ever bothered to 100%
I love how this smaller game did the revenge story much better 10 years ago meanwhile multimillion dollar game like tlou2 couldn't get it right
I got this game on PS3 as a joke and when I played it, It was one of the must fun experiences I had had! The game is actually amazing
did you know that the call of juarez games and dead island/dying light were made by the same developers.
yeah it's awesome to think about! genuinely great studio
In fact there is a dlc in dl1 that gives you the golden revolvers that are in gunslinger which are unlocked after you got all the skills
@@amirhb7531 funny that you mention that, in dead island the pistol (berreta 92) shares a similar model and animation with the berretta 92fs from call of juarez the cartell. but that is the only weapon that shares the same model, except the 2 snipers in riptide but other than those 3 examples, the guns in dead island only shares animations with some of the weapons from call of juarez the cartel.
Seeing this video made me want to replay this gem. Wish the studio would make a new one...
Definitely a good game, I wish there was a sequel to this. It would look nuts in modern graphics. Cartoon cell shade mixed with RDR2.
I replay this game once a year on my Switch, and it's a blast every time. Love this game
Absolutely adore this game. Great video as usual!
I got this out of a humble bundle I think and didn't play it for years. out of curiosity, I downloaded it and then played it straight to the end and loved every second of it
I recommend this one to everyone. Best of the series and one of the best I've played in recent years in general.
I remember playing this as a kid and just playing the demo for this game over and over for hours at end
This is MY favourite game OAT, it has changed my childhood completely and i still play it at least once a year
Best Call of Juarez game, in my opinion. I like the first two installments, They are decent, fun and have a very interesting story to tell. But Gunslinger outdone them on those too. If I have to recounting the time I replay any Call of Juarez games, Gunslinger will always be number 1 on the list.
Abilene Tx local here. Everytime I hear that something happened in Abilene, I get excited, only to find out later that it happened in Kansas. 😅
Lol
You know, the guys in this game WERE real people. Those were their names. The "cowboys" really existed, that's why we call every western outlaw a cowboy nowadays
I played the death out of the demo years ago and also first mission you missed the best quote
"I got this funny feeling"
"Funny haha?"
"No Steve the other kind of funny"
"Oh"
Speeking about games taking place in Wild West - for some reason, most of those are made by Poles. Like for example Call of Juarez series, Hard West series, that rpg called "M.E.A.T.", there is also a Earlly Access horror game called Blood West. Also, guys who made Painkiller and Hard Reset are making an western themed game called Evil West.
I can’t believe that game came out 11 years ago it’s so awesome
10:25 what’s funny about that is that is how Bon Oillinger died in real life.
Billy the kid escape his captivity stole bob’s shotgun and proceeded to shoot him in the chest out of a second story window with said shot gun.
I saw that in Young guns … too bad you can’t shoot him with his own gun 😂
Played this about 5 times over the years. Still holds up
One of the best games ever made. Genuine work of art.
this game has one of the best twist endings I've ever seen in a game before totally worth the journey
One of the best shooters of its generation imo. Had to get it on the Switch as well.
Thank's man! I rarely play games in the last 15 years. By rarely, I mean one or two games a year or two. And I rarely replay. But after your video, I have a strong desire to play all three parts of the game again.
I played gunslinger when I was little, don’t remember much about it but know I had tons of fun with it
One of my favourite shooters, damn boi, now that's an awesome game
I played several times through this game, which is something I rarely do. Usually, I never finish my Sp-Games at all. Such a Gem.
Can’t believe I’ve never played this game. That’s definitely going to change. I love Wild West games idk why they don’t make more!
Such a great underrated game i finished this thing maybe 8 to 10 times
Once you go true west you'll never go back
I loved this game, played the demo on PS3, later fully but I couldn't finish.
Later I finished on PC, was amazing this game is amazing.
Fantastic one shot game. Loved every minute of this game.
Call of Juarez is like Red Dead Revolver. Damn i wanna play this game now.
I played this game in 2013. This game is very underrated.
I had this game never really got into it but it's neat that it has the matrix movement for bullets
Like how at 4:25 you reload through the bottom as you were staring at the loading gate
it bothers me, and that no casings are ejected lol
I just realized I loved bl3's bounty of blood dlc so much bc it reminded me so goddamn much of this game
i played this game so many times, if you never played this it’s an easy classic, quick little game but man is it worth it
I loved this game when it came out wish they did more
All those names you thought were stupid but every single one is a real person from that time.
DUDE I LOVE THIS GAME SERIES- ITS FUN ASS HELL
First video i have seen of yours. You have a lot of energy, and a good vibe! keep it up!
P.S you sound like CaptainSparklez
This is one of my favorite games ever. I want it for the ps4/ps5.... but the devs have no plans for that.
That needs to change
Kinda weird that it's on the Switch, but not the other current consoles.
It's on Xbox via backwards compatible
Holy damn, about time someone appreciated this gem!
I wish this was ported to current-gen consoles. Remaster pack or something
It’s backwards compatible on Xbox one/ Xbox series x
This game so Good you're not even notice that they reused the same levels many times but you start from different area or going to different way.
Lmao he sounds like me after havin a case of beer and a fat dip
Great video, mate.
this game looks insane!!!! love the dual wielding :)
Got this on steam for like 2 dollars, great relaxed game that doesn’t overstay its welcome
3:14 jayvee’s iconic western snarl
I remember playing the demo on my ps3 this games actually cracked
I've beaten this game over and over again, it's just so slick
I've played this on my switch a d its strait up a hidden gem.
"who named these people!?😆"
*Me laughing in wild west history* ah, good times...
One of my favourite simple and awesome
i stil like to play GUNSLINGER MODE & side missions were fun building up combos AFTER the pretty damn fun campaign, good game 4 sure
these games were so amazing
I wanted this game so much when I was a kid. So i bought CoJ The Cartel because I though it's the same thing 🤦♂️
My ass played through the whole game not knowing you could dodge in duels
The original was a great came would’ve loved to see more
This game was seriously underrated, I downloaded XBLA version of the game just for time pass coz I have no other game to play, I thought I would play it for like 1 hr and then delete it, but the game turns out to be exactly opposite of what I thought about it, I had so much fun with this game, the shooting mechanics, art direction, music, everything was so top notch, must own title, do not hesitate to buy it
Curly Bill and Johnny Ringo were in fact real people dude.
“Who did they get to name these characters” - um themselves because they were real people lol
Fun fact: these names are actual real people and nuggets of truth explain everything about them
This game looks awesome!!
Those were real outlaws, Curly Bill Brocius was a actual person
This game is endless fun, I guess I finished it like 2 or 3 times, need to add another one on top of it, it's just dumb shooting fun.
I actually want to see jay play the cartel just to see how bad it is.
15:46 actually they got most of the names from real life
And some of them are from movies,
Johnny ringo and curly bill were both real life outlaws they are also characters in many movies
Certified childhood classic
