    Fantastic video. I was so disappointed with the picture quality from my Insta360 X3 that I thought there was something wrong with the camera. You are the only person who has explained why! I was going to go down the GoPro route but discovered the DJI mics and Osmo Actions, so now own them. If the videos from my Tiger 1200 are even half as good as yours, I’ll be over the moon. Hi Dave. You’ve just cost me £500!!!!!!! Based on your videos and advice, last week I bought the DJI Action 4 camera, wireless mic, and just had to buy the new wireless remote too. Not only that, I’ve now ordered the Telesin ND Filters!! Man, you’re costing me a fortune! So, now that you’ve done that, could you PLEASE keep your Masterclasses coming, as I’m confused. If you don’t, I’ll be paying you a visit for some one-to-one tuition. 😂👍

    Cheers Dave, so many of my questions answered and so much information i hadn't realised or knew. I have given up using the Insta X3 in Conjunction with the DJI action 3, because as you show, the difference in quality was so obvious, which in all honesty i didn't understand why at 5.7k v 4k, i do now. Although this wont matter now, i used a very cheap Lavalier microphone £13 off Amazon to cope with the zero only sensitivity and this gave better audio than the Rode version. Then i added the DJI wireless mic on your recommendation....Never looked back and a whole new world of quality audio arrived. Superb video Dave. keep em coming!

    I bought the Saramonic U3A because it's on DJI's compatible list with the bonus of not needing any adaptors, tried it out this afternoon and even at -12dB it's still too hot even at low speeds. Mic with deadcat clipped low down the front of my jacket & so behind screen/fairing (Burgman 400).

    Great info Dave look forward to the rest of the series, I'm still doing a lot of testing in the audio, thinking of going down the 32 bit float route to solve the levels problem. I've always found absurd to make a waterproof camera that you have to make unwaterproof to plug a mike in so possibly going to use the TENTACLE TRACK E & record to that, compound that with the fact there are two of us to record which it seems none of the comms units alow you to plug a recorder in to without cutting off the speakers so will try by plugging in an extra comms unit to record the audio. thanks for the great content & effort .

    Just a query on the rode wireless go 2.
    I use the same system as you do except its attached to a gopro 10 with media mod (unfortunately 😢), volume (gain) can be adjusted on the receiver unit of the rode down to -32.
    I find at this setting my voice is usually crisp and clear and the engine noise from my crf300l is not at all intrusive.
    Lavalier mikes are good too, but very unreliable with gopro.
    At least with transmitter in helmet if gopro stops recording audio (more likely WHEN it stops, not if), the sound is still there.
    Anyway, just thought I'd add that for people who are considering a rode wireless. Ultra reliable, adjustable, great battery life and storage capacity

    Fab video as always Dave. I have the original Osmo action and I bought the Cynova mic adapter which works well. I purchased a cheap Lavalier Mic off Amazon and cut it down to length to fit my helmet and soldered it back together. As I`m only just about to start vlogging on my bike I feel the sound quality is pretty good, it will never be as good as the wireless setup you use but I`m happy with it at the moment. Eventually I do plan to upgrade though ! Once again, fab video. Cheers 😀😀

      I'm also still on the original Osmo Action. I was using the mic adaptor for a while, but got frustrated with audio that was peaking too much. A cheap and less sensitive mic would help, I think. I now record audio separately on a Zoom F2. Good luck with the motovog!

  • @ianhughesroyalenfield

    Dave, well done for introducing a fantastic source of information for those of us trying to improve our CZcams videos. I am currently using a very old school SJCam SJ 6 Legend, and although it has, and still, serves me well, going forward, I will be wanting to improve the overall viewing experience. The only downside for me, being on quite a tight budget (pensioner), is the price of the set up you have. Somewhere in the region of £700, so I will have to save up a bit. That said, I am just 100 subs off the threshold for the YT partner program, so hopefully anything earned from that, will enable me to eventually buy the Osmo 3 and wireless mic. Thanks for putting this together, much appreciated.

    • @WheelieGoodTV
      @WheelieGoodTV  Před rokem +1

      If you use the DJI mic with the camera it supports it Marc. The receiver has a USB C port which can take external power as it’s plugged into the camera. This should also be the case with the standard mic adapter when DJI release it. Obviously I haven’t been able to try this but on the Insta 360 cameras with mic adapters this works all the time. It was the only way I was able to keep the GoPro powered for any longer than half an hour. 👍🎥🏍

Clear explanations that take away the mystery for the the likes of me, and that may just give me the confidence to do a bit more than just making a video of the trip and tacking on some music. And the odd bit of blarney from you makes it fun to. Oh, just thought of a question. Do you think the remote mic would work if embedded into the helmet liner, maybe just forward of the right ear piece? 35deg+ in the French summer means the snood would have to be soaking wet!

    • @WheelieGoodTV
      @WheelieGoodTV  Před rokem +1

      Hi, yes an ND filter will produce a better overall image than a polariser. A polariser is good for getting rid of unwanted reflections by introducing heavy contrast but an ND filter enhances the entire image by balancing brightness with shade. The side effect is that you can also dial in a lower shutter speed for the correct motion blur.

      @WheelieGoodTV  Před rokem

      I use stereo only for some separation but if you’re using two mics then take the audio directly from the transmitter by plugging them into your computer and then extracting the files. • @WheelieGoodTV

      One more question on the dji mic. Does it turn on / off automatically when you turn on / off the action 3 or do you need to keep it the dji mic adapter "on" even if you don't film with the cam ? My point is related to the battery life duration of the mic adapter

  • @fmommen
    @fmommen Před rokem

    To synchronise sound and image I don't clap my hands (very difficult when riding), I use the bike's horn. And I place my mic in my jack's backpocket, near the exhaust, out of the wind. Another thing: I understand colorgrading gives great results. Except when you are very higly colorblind like I am. Therefore I must rely on camera settings...

    Hi Dave,
    Great video! I’ve bought the action 3 and wireless mic because of you 😂.
    Now here it goes more money !
    Have you had the chance to see how this system time code synching actually works in case you have 2 action 3 cameras?
    Do you need an external device? Assuming you mount one to record yourself and the other one on the chin, how do actually set this up? Via the app?
    This would be game changer for motovlogging

    Many, many thanks for this. There are so many so called "experts" on CZcams but it a real pleasure to hear from a proper pro 👍 and will incorporate some of these tips into my videos from this Masterclass. I have been playing around with the sound on the DJI 3 and can say the sound from a cheap as chips mic is acceptable for me. The firmware update made an enormous difference and makes cheap mics workable. I bought a USB C to TTRS adaptor (I think it was advertised as headset adaptor for phones without a 3.5mm jack) in order to try a wide range of cheap mics I already owned and some work better than others, positioning is key of course. Now to my question, can you take the receiver and connect on the end of a USB C extension lead so as to put it in, say, a pocket? I will be purchasing the DJI and was holding off as was not sure how the transmitter mic would sit in the helmet. Already ready looking forward to the next class👍

    You mentioned the Insta 360 bit rate as being about 80 but there is a slider within the Insta 360 studio app in the export dialogue that goes up to 200. I typically do mine at around 120. Are you saying that doing this doesn't actually lift the bit rate, as I've often wondered this myself? When the original Osmo Action came out there was no audio adapter and they decided to farm it out to a company called Cynova. I got one and it didn't work. Since then Boya have one as well which does seem to work.

      Yes that ‘slider’ is only for the bit rate within the editing software NOT the camera unfortunately. I’ve done real world camera tests in this (which were too complicated for my video) but realistically the camera bit rate in maximum resolution is around 80mbps.

Essentially, the GoPro recorded me, and my mates all at the same time. Sometimes it was brilliant, but after that mic adapter got seriously wet, it wasn't so brilliant.

    Hi Dave, thanks for video! I wanted to ask, you mention that you use -8db on the Receiver Gain, however when I connect the DJI action pro camera with DJI mic using USB C Adapter, changing the Receiver Gain doesn't do anything. Whether it's -12db or +12db. Only making changes in transmitter and camera itself actually make audible difference. I also checked the video on DJI official webpage (DJI Mic Basic Operation) and it says at 3:37 mark that "The Receiver Gain can only be adjusted when connected with analog port devices, such as 3.5mm jack or IOS adapter. USB C Ports are not compatible". I recorded multiple videos in static environment using your setup. I kept the DJI Camera Gain and DJI Mic Transmitted Gain the same and only made changes to Receiver Gain, and there was no difference. Was your experience different? I thought my mic is faulty, but since on their page they say USB C doesn't work, I wonder if it might be just a placebo when we hear a difference. It might actually require USB C to 3.5mm jack dongle to hear a difference when changing Receiver Gain. What do you think? I wanted to edit that I tried the IOS adapter and changing gain worked. When you go on DJI Webpage www.dji.com/mic/video and check the basic operations vide and go to 3:35 to 3:37 it says in captions on the bottom that USB C is not supported to change Receiver Gain. I've watched all your video re: Osmo Action 3 + DJI Mic and in 1 video you mention -8db for the Receiver and -12db for the Transmitter. Are these the best settings you found or do you use a different combination now? I was also wondering about the direction of the Mic:pointing upward, downward or else? Thank you

      I now use -10 on both and also set the camera audio to -10 too. Microphone always pointed up but I’m now thinking my audio is too clean so time to experiment some more I think 🤔…..

    Hello. Just got a DJI Action 3. I'm shooting at 24fps. First few vids I've been shooting at 1/50 on the helmet chinbar. Seems to be a bit slow as I'm getting image shudder when I move my head/go over a bump etc.(even with IS on) Should I just up the shutter speed a bit? Thanks in advance!

    • @WheelieGoodTV
      @WheelieGoodTV  Před rokem

      It’s not the shutter speed, that’s set correctly. Try upping your ISO as this is a known phenomenon in low light with IS on. I presume your mount on your helmet is rock solid?

    Interesting video, however I'm surprised with the choice of the camera. DJI Action 3 have well known issue with focusing, the image is rather washed out and nowhere near the quality of GoPro footage. I considered this camera but watching quite a few CZcams reviews, I'm leaning towards the GoPro 11. Has this been fixed? Why have you decided to choose this camera over GoPro 10 or 11, am I missing something? I still haven't upgraded my GoPro 7 so any input would be greatly appreciated.

      I think the focus issues will not be apparent on motovlogs since, as far as I understand, the issue is with close focussing. The GoPro image quality is slightly better, but I don't think that cancels out all other considerations.
