Never been enough love in the world for the Muses. Brilliant band, great songwriting, steering vocals and fabulous instrumentalists.
Mid 80s to 92 was the golden years of what came to be know as Alternative rock.
Change my mind.
Peace.
By 1996 alternative rock was dead
Saw Kristen perform in Reading, UK last night with her band. She’s 52 now and still has that fantastic voice.
kristen🎉❤
I saw them live at a block party put on by an independent radio station in the mid 90s. The peak of her vocal prowess. Never heard of the band before, never forgot it since.
Throwing Muses, The Breaders and Belly - the holy trinity of music
Belly, really? Belly sounds like sweet lemonade compared to Kristin Hersh’s Throwing Muses (without Tanya Donnely that is).
true, a band is nothing without tanya donelly
@@lowceiling They're OK, but they're no Breaders.
I am more Hersh than Donelly, Both are great . . . I used to see Hersh in Providence annually. University was a revelation. This particular song was the third best on an exemplary album.
The Breeders
Love the way she sways as she sings
One of the best songs of the 90s. . should have plaus million hits. . has to be LOUDER
much louder
EXACTLY!!
I like all the great alternative hits from the 90's but this is in my top 5. Good stuff
University was my first Muses purchase; it was the record store "Staff Recommendation" for people who like Tanya Donelly (I was a big Belly fan) so I bought it on a whim. Bright Yellow Gun was the first Muses song I ever heard and it literally changed my life. The opening 4 songs on University (Bright Yellow Gun, Start, Hazing, Shimmer) make a fantastic mini-album that I never tire of listening to.
Shimmer is truly the outstanding track of the album imo
I bought the cassette and wore it out. Bought a 2nd one and wore it out. Finally got the CD.
Love snake face too
Haven’t heard this song in well over 20 years, since the early to mid 90s indie rock heyday. Sounds even fresher and more brilliant today! Glad I still have all my 4AD CD’s and CD singles from back then, but wish I hadn’t stopped buying vinyl around ‘88-‘89.
always on my playlist. tight song
Wow. Really good stuff. That drummer is holding it down. Solid as hell.
I still remember giving "University" one of my highest reviews. I still view this album and the performances as some of the best in alternative rock. This is a very complex, rich, and deep band of writers and musicians. Their songs and approach are incredibly unique. David's drumming is just stellar.
Always take a break from this great band before diving right back into them every few months. A shame that they aren't better known
Wow - still blows me away decades later. "I have nothing to offer but the middle of the night". Brilliant. So personal.
One of my all-time favorites! It's such a powerful, well-written song. She has an amazing and unique voice and the harmonies in this kick-ass song are fantastic. I' used to get so lost in this song
seriously underrated band, and the fact that Narcizo uses no cymbals is utter genius. Has a Bun E. Carlos rhythm
??? Im speechless! What do you call the object the drummer hits at 01:04 ?
They were ahead of their time .
They were described as "pop music for the 21st Century back in the late 80's in one UK music magazine.
He started playing drums in marching band in high school -- and was completely unaware that a drum set was supposed to have cymbals. He is incredible. One magazine called him "wristless" and they're so right...Mania is another song where he just blows me away...
@@ahousefellonme I'd also read that when they started out he couldn't afford them anyway. It's rare these days to see a rock drummer playing with a jazz grip, though. He DOES use cymbals on this track, though, just not much. And he always uses hi-hat cymbals.
W Bertie Yup!! You can find their demos from 1983, and you can hear the lack of cymbals...when they did their very first album, he had cymbals. I love how he hardly ever uses them, though...
Pure and genuine 90s indie pop-rock.
🌀
This song is absolutely amazing. I have spent years listening it and I don´t get tired of hearing it.
Difficult to find three musicians as proficient and tight as these three
I'm the same way about Dizzy
KEEP CALM and PLAY SOCCER IN YOUR PAJAMAS ha, that’s actually the song she wrote when Warner Bros told them that they needed to make a song that was catchy and would get radio play...she hates Dizzy and they never played it again.
(Kristin didn’t write songs on purpose - they came to her like audio hallucinations at 3 am...like a radio was playing in her head, she has said. So she had to force Dizzy out on command...Warner Bros later sued them for a bunch of $$ because they spent more money on TM than TM made for them...she never signed to a label again. started her own instead...
Only song of Kristin’s that got major play was “Your Ghost.”
I know that was waaaay more info than you ever didn’t ask for with your comment from a year ago...😂😂 I LOVE YOUR USERNAME!!!
The same here.
same!
LOVE THIS BAND!
They have remained one of my favourite bands since I discovered them in 1991. If I am totally honest with myself I would probably have to admit they have been my _top_ favourite band during all these years.
@@maidsandmuses Right on. I first heard them in 1988 on the 4AD compilation Lonely Is An Eyesore (the title even comes from Throwing Muses lyrics). I've been a fan ever since, including Kristin Hersh's solo work and Belly.
I just discovered this band, man they are soooo good..
Correct! 😂
Love, love, love that little mini-fill David Narcizo throws in a few times.
Phew! Brings back memories... Absolutely in love with Hersh.
Absolutely brilliant song writer. She is amazing!!
The brilliant Kristin Hersh!
Great song, great band, great voice.
I love the K sways in this vid - and her and Liz F can compete for the bluest eyes in 4AD history.
i adore the song... brings me back to my teenage years and it it so strong and beautiful
I think you need a little poison
woooooooooohooooooooo
now THIS is music!
Bernie Georges is an extremely underrated bass player from 2 highly underrated bands!
Hollywood should discover ....amazing tune ....do your research Hollywood!
AMAZING SONG , love Kristin writing
It's been days since I've discovered this band... I'm both angry at me for not knowing then yet, and also in awe with their music
This album is still great
Wow! I haven't heard this in at least 15 years ... this is an awesome song .... Throwing Muses rock... good thing I saw a Nirvana video that mentioned them ... COOL!!!!
You'd have to be very hard hearted not to like this immensely.
if you ever get tired of listening to her solo projects and the muses and never seen them live your a true poseur
20 more years has passed since I heard this song in 1990's .
Great song, probably their most commercially successful.
Here in Brazil were Dizzy and Fish, but, you know, we're talking about "indie success": airplay at college or "rock stations" and videos (on hot rotation, it's true!) at specific indie shows on public television. But this tracks, definitely, could ask for themselves the title of "minor hits" in Porto Alegre region (Southern Brazil). Amazing time of Feluspe FM, Cultura FM and Ipanema FM.
Great band. Kristin is wonderfully unique.
Love Kristin's voice in this!
Whoo!! Loved this song back then. How I wish I could go back. 💙🔥
Kristin is a genius
Yes, of course!😀
Good old times ... They were featured almost every week in the Off Beat music show on German television 30 years ago. Until the broadcaster was forced to replace it with something "more mainstream". Shortly afterwards I stopped watching television, anyway. Kristin was so adorable and, from what I heard, still is.
YES - The Throwing Muses - from Newport, RI
The gravity of the situation is that that's a great tune
Love this.
great song. Nice rhythm.
It’s May 2020 and this song STILL rocks🎈
Such a great song. Power Pop trio par excellence.
Not just a great song. I might give it in the top 10 rock songs ever? Am I wrong? This track gets better by the second. I've been listening for years, studying, loving this...
I'm sure I'm not wrong.
My landlord is banging on my neighbor's door, she be dodging rent!
I know that knock!
Thanks for making me laugh out loud!!
A great track by a great band.
Saw them live many times in the 1980's and 1990's :
with the Pixies as support the first time in London and in 1997 Manchester Uni with Come as support.
The latter was awesome as Come were/are vastly underrated . Listen to tracks like "sad eyes" and "brand new vein" and you will see why !
Keith Bate yes! I have that come album 11:11
This wasn't the video I saw on MTV back then, it involved umbrellas
Love this video! ;)
Yep
2021 and I need a little poison
freaking awesome!
Kristin Hersh is hot! Throwing Muses University album Kickstarted my Collecting 4AD albums back then. Breeders, Belly, Pixies etc.
Underated since 30 years ago.
this cant get much better
that head sway tho ;)
Alternative indie-rock greatest drummer 🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤
Fave.
I saw this tour.
I love you 4AD. Always have:D
Never seen this version of the video. Wow, Kristin.
Nice thank you
Ah, the precise moment I fell a little bit in love with Kristin Hersh...
This was a good time in my life
Fun fact: Kristin's husband (now ex) Billy is the guy in drag with the Bright Yellow Gun.
😛
Holy shit I never noticed! So it is!
And the bride?
@@JC-yy8iv A great band, nonetheless-...
underrated band
EPIC!!
Finally!!! I need more from University!
Live in the now. I love this song, but nostalgia makes you old and irrelevant.
@@electrojones show me a song from the now with this kind of power and authenticity. Appreciating the strength of songs from the past doesn't make a person old and irrelevant. It simply means they know and appreciate quality music, which is timeless. And also, no need to disown one's youth to be "relevant."
So thankful I discovered Kristin/TM in my teens
Cool!
Great Song , yep.
Great Purple Haze hommage
to Jimmi Hendrix.
Hi is this the 40something nostalgia club ?
I would honored to be Kristin Hersh in my next life.
Одна из моих наилюбимейших групп. Кристин красотка.
Kristen Hirsch is amazing
Jam.
Such a cool song. Not sure why this video sat on the shelf.
My CD of " Throwing Muses" was actually stolen from my car.
@@peggyfranzen6159 My condolences.
Kristen said in an interview the record company did not want to release a vid that shows smoking and they prob couldn’t figure out the vid anyway so they gave her 100,000 to make another one!
Here’s a link for her, Tanya’s, and about 70 others!

I stil quote this song... I think I need a little poison.
Kris is the ONLY American artist to ever have been signed by 4AD. Gives one pause.
Lol you’re forgetting a few. Even the most famous 4AD band is American
That's how I recall it. And that's how I recall it when this record was made. Could be more, now.
"LOL- the new 'you-know, like...'"
MrPink By the time this came out, Pixies, Red House Painters, His Name is Alive, etc. had been there for years. Maybe Throwing Muses were first? Not only for long though
As I said, it's how I recall it. I'm always willing to be corrected.
@@WicksThings Throwing Muses was the first American band. The Pixies were second. In her freaking brilliant memoir "Rat Girl", she writes that 4AD called her repeatedly: "we want to sign you, but we don't sign American bands."
"Okay," she said, and they hung up. These phone calls went on like this for awhile until they finally called and said they were going to sign them. "Okay," she said. Even people who have no idea who Kristin Hersh is should read "Rat Girl"...Rolling Stone calls it one of the best rock memoirs ever written. Her book about Vic Chesnutt is heartbreaking, too...
One of the best "rat girl" era Muses songs. Love it, love it! And Dave N'zs-o, is so funny
I like this band.
I did not know she did this stuff i had the kh solo album
That black dude sure can play ! Hands down!!!!
and a circus in my head.....
University
Limbo
Golden age of Muses
according with the comments, this is the 42837459129° song in the Top10_rock_song of all times.
C'est le singe le plus chanceux de la terre ! Il fait un bisous à Kristin Hersh ☺
Great song. Her head sway could give Stevie Wonder a run for his money.
I love the lead singer dress it’s beautiful
I wore Dave's tux to prom.
I had no idea Sam Rockwell used to drum in the Muses!
And where the Fuck is UNIVERSITY?? One of the Best Alt albums of all time. Northeast Surf and Snowboarding music.. when Snowboarding WAS Badass
crabtown is an amazing contine
Kristin Hersh is a goddess
Absolutely!!
That K sway…..
Oh yeah!
What was it with 1995 and bands on stages with red curtains?
Around that time was a fashion for lounge music and the iconography of cabaret/vegas.
Kristin Hersh discovered late, but not to late ;)
Uuhh, this song, uhmmm...nxt!!!
