REM were so inconsistent live. I saw them twice, and although the first time was fantastic, the second was bum numbingly boring, and almost uncomfortable to see a band so unhappy to be playing before an audience.

I don´t have a problem with giving each 4ad track best note, but I´m very individualistic with my personal selections. This Throwing Muses-song I chose for its simplicity, I´m a big fan of something when I can´t describe why I´m a fan of it. I guess, DIZZY hits a structure in my brain to say so.

    • @mammooification
      @mammooification Před 6 lety +1

I can't disagree with you - 4AD released much Indie which was less melodic I.E. Pixies, UVS. I was very much into the Dinosaur Jr. Sonic Youth, Mudhoney. Butthole Surfers vibe. With a touch of Pussygalore. I was only 15 but in Britain we had this DJ called John Peel on BBC radio 1, who played a great range of 'alternative music'. As kids were were very lucky. But Hunkpapa and later the Breeders brought a greater melody, less aggression to the prevailent sound - when I heard Dizzy I was bowled over. Whist I loved Hunkpapa (apparently they were a part of Navaho who Sitting Bull controlled - heard that on a PBS documentary yesterday...) it's a shame. like Pod, that it's one of those forgotten nuggets of gold.

Thanks for the interesting correspondence. I´m a bit of a hopeless fan, because British Alternative touches my heart as if I was born in London (I was born in Cologne), whilst music from Germany nearly completely leaves me cold and seems to be strange. My favourite song of all songs ever is BEACH HOUSE´S "Majorette" for its majestetic aura. I´m a crazy fan of AGNES OBEL (from Denmark), too (listen to "Mary" from "Citizen Of Glass"). I´m happy there is so much to adore for me in music.

Their "dumb" single according to Kristin and one of the very few times, if not the only time, they "played the game". As a massive fan from centuries ago, I totally get what she is saying and why she hates it, but I don't care, lol. I still love the song and the hugely underrated in their catalogue Hunkpapa album. Kristin proved she could write a straightforward pop song, if only to satisfy the record company, and still do it with class to spare.

Interesting story... They're a great band, liked them back in the day, but didn't do much of a deep dive into their stuff prior to Real Ramona. Wish I had. Also wish I'd been on the ball enough to try to go to one of their shows in Newport or Boston back then.
Kristin and Tanya are crazy talented... It's a shame that Tanya went off in her own direction, though Belly was pretty damn spectacular, it would have been very interesting to see how the Muses would have evolved had they stayed together. I get it though, Tanya probably wanted to make her own way, she clearly had what it took to do so.

    Along the Palo Duro canyon
Red River shows so many eyes
One eye squinting shading from the sun, shoot me
Black as oil, his hair shone
    Lily white his skin glistened
Restless as the reed between his lips blew
It's just that mean old Texas sun
It makes me dizzy, dizzy, dizzy in my head
What day is this? I quietly asked the sky
What time is it? he asked me sitting up
Love that villain on the run
He's got me spinning 'round and falling on my head
What are you running from? I asked the white boy
From the guys who chased me there come run
I need your dark skin to sit beside me in my car
Light up my cigar, I'll light you
It's just that mean old Texas sun
It makes me dizzy, dizzy, dizzy in my head
Love that villain on the run
He's got me spinning 'round and falling on my head
    And dizzy, dizzy, dizzy
    In my head
He said, you're only Indian in Oklahoma
You could be melting in America
White on red, melt with my skin
These two hearts will beat along the walls of our hotel
I need your dark skin to sit beside me in my car
Light up my cigar, I'll light you
It's just that mean old Texas sun
It makes me dizzy, dizzy, dizzy in my head
The last I saw of Oklahoma
A gas station fading in the dusk
Goodbye to my father, I thought, I'm carrying the light
    The light of my Comanche
Make sure the dog remembers me
I dream the sand beneath your feet
    I hold the light
It's just that mean old Texas sun
It makes me dizzy, dizzy, dizzy in my head
Love that villain on the run
He's got me spinning 'round and falling on my head

Today's music is devolving into computerized instrumentation, vocal loops with meaningless words, and no thought or effort whatsoever going into crafting songs.
