Why are F1 steering wheels expensive?

  • This Formula 1 steering wheel costs over £30,000 and with good reason, as it’s the most important component of an entire Formula 1 car.
Not only will the driver use this to steer into and out of corners, they’ll also have control over hundreds of different settings to make sure their car is always performing at its best out on-track. Here is how they do it.

    ----------
Every Formula 1 steering wheel is custom made for the person driving the car. It is hand-built using a carbon fibre structure for the core.
Like the rest of the car, it is very light but also very strong, and can handle all of the forces that both the car and driver place on it during a race.
A Formula 1 steering wheel contains over 20 points of control for the driver to modify throughout a race.
These are a combination of military-spec buttons, rotary switches, dials, and the paddles on the back of the wheel too.
On top of this there’s a large display and three arrays of LED lights to quickly give a driver the information they need.
A team will make around 3 wheels per driver at the start of the season, and may add more as the design gets updated throughout the races.
This, combined with the materials, safety requirements and the customisation of each wheel, results in one that takes up to 5 weeks to assemble, and costs over £30,000 to produce and set up.

Love the way one steering wheel is worth more than a brand new 2022 car, and when max gets pissed he just chucked it out of the car like its nothing lol.

Look up Rubens Barrichello. Chucked it at Casino Square at Monaco, few cars hit it, it ended up near Swimming Pool half a lap later.

There's a big gap between sim racing wheels and real wheels but it's getting a lot closer these days. Fanatec for example have started making wheels that you can use both in your sim and in the real race car. That's pretty cool.

another great video PJ. wonder how much money Williams saved not having their screen on the wheel? and 10 meters of cable was very surprising, id assumed it would just be some massive circuit boards inside!

    • @PJTierney
      @PJTierney  Před 2 lety +1

It's a combination of boards and wiring, based on the videos I've seen. if you check the Aston Martin video in the description you'll see one opened up.
As for the screen, having it on the chassis means less inertia and weight in the wheel, but it also makes it trickier for the driver to get in/out.
Mercedes in one of the source articles said that the screen and electronics was the most expensive part of the materials.

Do you remember Hamilton’s steering wheel change in a race? Can’t remember what race it was or even when, but a fault meant he had to switch it out during a pit stop. Didn’t lose much time for it aswell.

India 2012! They changed the steering wheel as fast as the tyres.
