It's no wonder that his kicks and snares always have this really heavy attack. I used to think that it was purely because of samples blended in but this gate trick makes more sense. Great tip!
Thanks!
@@GreenLightSound You're welcome! Btw, I just tested this trick on the old SSL Duende Native emulation, and it worked out well, so I don't see any reason for it not to work on the newer Native emulations.
Great tip. Thank you.
You're welcome!
These tricks are prettyyy cool i must say
Man, I highly appreciate you making this video. This gave me a clear understanding on what gates do and how I can utilize it. For the past 2 year or so, I’ve only used SSL channel strip plugins for its Mic pre, EQ, and Compression. Never had a clue on what a gate does. But seeing how you used it like a drum shaper, I had to slap myself in the forehead hah. I’ve bought and used plugins JUST TO DO what a gate does when all this time I could’ve used the gate on a SSL channel strip if I would’ve known. Thanks again
Thank you!!
I remember the guy who engineered Third Eye Blind’s self titled album talking about using this technique. He was accused of using samples on that album, but it was actually this!
And for those who use free plugin, I tested it with the Logic Channel (SmackLabs) and it worked
Nice!
great stuff,u can even duplicate the track and use this trick on one of them, use a little eq and mix it
Nice tip!
Wow the brainworx one nailed it
Most (all?) gates have a 'pop' on the attack if set a certain way. It's just the nature of the attack. You'll hear a 'click' of the gate opening. It's often undesirable but yeah, on drums, especially kicks it can add a beater effect.
This is a great technique! To my ears the UAD and the Waves fall short whereas the Brainworks SSL does EXACTLY what a desk does. Waves fast attack is too fast but if you increase the release time it gets close. UAD is just disappointing here as the gate lets too much through, and there's the costly price tag too, when compared to the others. Thanks for the info and examples!
Brainworx is just as expensive
@@jimhardiman3836 but works as expected. UAD not so much for reasons stated above, not forgetting the ilok mess too. It's your choice and your money.
@@tisbonus I was only responding to your statement about the costly price tag and replying that brainworx costs the same. I wasn't commenting about the performance (which BTW UAD seems to work just fine for many professional engineers).
@@jimhardiman3836 Isn't performance what matters though? Many more pro's use waves than UAD for the reasons listed. Ilok is a big pain in the ass and anyone using it is familiar with that sentiment. I own all three and have no allegiance to any one company. I'm still using waves because of its simplicity and price but if you've ever used an SSL desk, brainworks is extremely close to the real thing.
Stable genius @@tisbonus again I was remarking about your claim about the price. But if you want to talk about performance, UAD SSL works just fine for Joe Chiccarelli, but apparently you know better than Joe. How many hit records have you produced?
To my taste, I like it more with the IK British Channel. Thanks for the video.
IK British Channel is underrated. Maybe it's because it's not endorsed by SSL and is laid out a bit differently than most channel strips. But sound-wise, it's right up there.
@@GreenLightSound ...yes is underrated and I also thinks is because is not endorsed, but even the laid out of the SSL plugins Channel Strip is different from the others, so, that should not be a reason to be underrated.
You're a CHAMPION!! Made all the difference for me -Especially in my kick. I always like to try and find alternatives to just smashing something with compression (mainly because I suck at using compression...). So, thanks!! I used the free Dead Duck Gate and it works like a charm!!
Happy to help!
I always do that.
I tried both the SSL Native Channel Strip 2 and the SSL 4K B plugins and neither of them could really get that click, which was pretty surprising. The Brainworx 4000 G and 4000 E definitely could and the Brainworx 9000 J could KINDA get it but wasn’t as effective as the G and E.
is there other tools we could use to do this like just a gate and a compressor if so could you show and a example?
Do you find the UAD and BX come quite close? Also have you found that the E emulation works best for this trick vs the G / J ?
New Waves SSL CHANNEL EV2 can do this trick. thanks a lot for tip
Ha! Many times I've had problem with the kick and not being able to control the compressor release well enough, then ended up violently chopping off the tail with gate. Never though that this would be a technique to use, merely a way around a problem I cannot solve.
Works great when blended with a natural kick.
Great video! Does the Brainworks SSL 4000 G also produce this sound on the kick?
Wonder why the channel E is being used when Andy used the SSL G
Killer dude.
I wonder does andy wallace use this on a mix or it's just a trick for him to trigger to the drum machine?
He uses it while mixing for sure.
Which ssl channel strip you think sound the best?
I own the Pluggin Alliance and the Waves. They sound surprisingly sound so different
I like UAD the best, but use the Plugin Alliance the most since it's much lighter on the CPU.
Thanks for very good and informative video. I have 2 questions. First: In my studio I use real analogue SSL compressor XR628 which has gate/expander mode. Will it work the same as you presented with plugins?
And second question, I've been always using envelope shapers or/and multiband envelope shapers with kick/snare to bring the attack or/and cut tail.
Can you please explain which is method is better? The technique you presented or multiband envelope shapers? Pros and cons of each? Thank you.
I've never used the XR628, so I can't be sure if it will work the same as the E and G series dynamics. It does have the fast attack mode, so it potentially could. Multiband envelope shapers can achieve the same effect, but they usually have more features which take longer to set up. The advantage of this method is that is quick and easy, plus you have the rest of the channel strip there for your standard EQ and dynamics needs.
@@GreenLightSound thank you.
Awesome!
Can I get same effect with other gate plugins?
Non-SSL kind
Not sure since I haven't tried.
Where do you get this information from? Andy doesnt do a lot of interviews and i haven’t heard him speak about this ever
I got it from one of his few interviews, circa 2014 I think. If you dig enough you can find some of his tips and tricks.
Also he shows all his major drum mixing techniques in the last two Mix With The Masters videos he did circa 2017
@@GreenLightSound thanks!
Hi, did you check out the Waves plugin, CLA MixHub?!
Thanks.
I did and it works like it's supposed to!
@@GreenLightSound Greeat, thanks
Andy Wallace used a look ahead via sliding a duplicated track sent to sidechain to avoid the gate distortion.
How do you know this?
@@JRCorominas he explains in an interview that that he'd duplicate and play off record head, delay it, then send to sidechain input of gate, making it open before the transient rather than as the transient is occurring.
@@1176hambone thnx for replying. Is the actual sound we’re hearing the attack of the kick or the pop from the gate?
bounce in place and take a look at the waveform. Compare. You will see the front side completely screwed, phase effed and distorted. @@JRCorominas
Hi. Many thanks for this video! I would really appreciate if you could check waves cla mixhub to see if it is working or has the same issue as ssl channel. Simple yes/no answer would be great as today it's on sale 🙂 and thanks again for all these tips!
It works with Mixhub!
@@GreenLightSound a billion thanks! You are just awesome!
just for the record :) at the end I wasable to test CLA mixhub myself with side by side BX E - I have to say CLA was too artificial and the gate made it somehow muddy..not smooth at all. It's sad and it looks good but..but :)
Darn I have the waves version 😖
Is it just the bx E-series or does it work on the bx G-series, as well?
Fwiw it’s my understanding that Andy uses a g not an e. Not sure if you meant this or just does the actual software work
How does the SSL Native Channel Strip compare?
Not sure - I don't have that one. I would assume it works since it's made by SSL.
@@GreenLightSound The trial period is free. Would you have a chance to check out?
Do I do this after I've done the EQ and compression, or before?
I would do it before.
@@GreenLightSound Thanks.
What about the new Waves EV2 ?
can do, tested by me
Good tip not so good if you don't want lose quieter hits and ghost notes
My favorite AW kick - the attack is so firm the low end tight and the mid range has this distinct character - amazing. czcams.com/video/Dn8vzTsnPps/video.html
