  • Guitar Gallery compares the Yamaha CG-142S and CG-142C. We definitely find that the cedar has a warmer sound while the spruce model has a bit more brightness and clarity. Which one do you prefer? We think one needs to own both!

I personally liked more cedar top in this video... spruce is definitely brighter. When I was student, somewhere in Moscow/Russia (few decades ago), people around were strumming and fingerpicking, and it was always *huge WOW effect* when someone was playing solid cedar top guitar for romantic pieces. Popular brands were from Czechoslovakia.

I had 2 guitars with cedar and spruce. CG122MS and 122MC. In my opinion the cedar has rounder sound. Warmer. And a bit responsive than spruce. But the spruce has better clarity.

As someone mentioned, since bracing is not tuned to the wood, we hear the difference. Even if we play 4 Yamaha and all 4 are spruce we will feel difference. Because bracing is not tuned to the wood.
