I don't think people will make a big deal of this song or worry about what a reactor says about it because we've become almost immune to all the prophesies and dire warnings about the future from endless media and movies. So much more information and discoveries have come along since, and some of the concepts in this have become reality.
It's a very forward looking song, with a lot of scope to it. And the idea someone had to run bits of "Metropolis" in the background was GENIUS. I've seen the video several times and it goes so well with the eerie feeling of the song. It's a very basic scifi thing, to look ahead and wonder what will be.

When this first came out, I considered this a protest song. As it talks about a dystopian society. And the video clips from the silent film, "Metropolis" is just icing on the cake. That movie fits this song. As the song appeared to me and some others I knew at the time. to talk about technology controlled by the establishment so that the establishment could control you. What some of us feared back then was the loss of freedom in the future. And this song fed into those fears.

My dad who passed away 10 years ago now and was born in 1931, used to say that the older you get the faster time flies, and he said that is true of the world in general, not just human beings. I think this needs to be placed in the context of the times, 1969. Everything was centered on the race to the moon. Movies like 2001: A Space Odyssey had come out the year before. The Apollo moon missions were finally going to land on the moon. The country was turning to the future. But, what was that future going to be?

I mean, I was only ten or so at the time, but even as young people we were aware of books like 'Brave New World' and '1984', and 'Planet of the Apes' was out. The dates for each "prediction" are irrelevant, as many are already coming true -- our reliance on machines to do our work, test tube babies, etc. Rather, the overall intent, in my opinion, is to illustrate mankind's indifference to our overall outlook on life ... and the price we'll eventually have to pay for our selfishness and greed.

Think about just where we are now as a human race, where we were a thousand years ago and where we might be a thousand years from now? That's the purpose of the song, to promote thoughts. The 60s was not a time where people were obsessed about themselves, about every little thing that happened in their life, about what people thought about them on tiktok. People were genuinely concerned about the problems we dealt with day today, about ending racism about women's rights, about the Cold War. We had bigger fish to fry back then. As much as I love the internet and social media, I hate what it's turned the younger generations into in some ways. Is an INFLUENCER really contributing much positivity in the king run, or is it really about their popularity? IMO, That's all the song writer was doing, trying to make people think about how humans affect each other & the world we live in and On.. The artist's interpretation is just that.. his thoughts . I have always been a fan and a student of science fiction. I've read as many books as I can find going back to the very earliest science fiction books such as Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. I found them too be absolute commentaries on how society has progressed over the centuries and often scarily close to predicting the future. This song is no different.. Isn't it true that you can pick your child from a test tube today? I happen to agree with the religious sentiments too but some people could just take them as allegory. Okay, young man. You really ought to watch Fritz Lang's 1927 silent sci-fi film "Metropolis." Also check out Aldous Huxley's novel Brave New World. The latter has never been adapted for cinima, but has been made into at least two made for tv movies. At any rate, they may give you more insight as to the dystopian future predicted by this song. I'd describe the song as a bleak vision of possible dystopias based on expectations of developments in various fields, such as pharmacy, genetics, and 'labor-saving' devices, all of which are pushed to logical, if normally horrifying extremes. If you're trying to treat the song as strict prophesy, (which I think is silly) the earliest quoted year is over five hundred years in the future, so it's practically certain that nobody currently living will still be alive at that time.

The 60s was not a time where people were obsessed about themselves, about every little thing that happened in their life, about what people thought about them on tiktok. People were genuinely concerned about the problems we dealt with day today, about ending racism about women's rights, about the Cold War. We had bigger fish to fry back then. As much as I love the internet and social media, I hate what it's turned the younger generations into in some ways. Is an INFLUENCER really contributing much positivity in the king run, or is it really about their popularity?
IMO, That's all the song writer was doing, trying to make people think about how humans affect each other & the world we live in and On..
The artist's interpretation is just that.. his thoughts . I have always been a fan and a student of science fiction. I've read as many books as I can find going back to the very earliest science fiction books such as Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. I found them too be absolute commentaries on how society has progressed over the centuries and often scarily close to predicting the future.
This song is no different.. Isn't it true that you can pick your child from a test tube today?
I happen to agree with the religious sentiments too but some people could just take them as allegory.
In the end, the moral of the story is the human race is going to be exactly what you me and everyone else on this planet right this second makes of it. What are we passing on to our children and our grandchildren and those who will follow us?

Okay, young man. You really ought to watch Fritz Lang's 1927 silent sci-fi film "Metropolis." Also check out Aldous Huxley's novel Brave New World. The latter has never been adapted for cinima, but has been made into at least two made for tv movies. At any rate, they may give you more insight as to the dystopian future predicted by this song. Weirdly prophetic!
I'd describe the song as a bleak vision of possible dystopias based on expectations of developments in various fields, such as pharmacy, genetics, and 'labor-saving' devices, all of which are pushed to logical, if normally horrifying extremes. If you're trying to treat the song as strict prophesy, (which I think is silly) the earliest quoted year is over five hundred years in the future, so it's practically certain that nobody currently living will still be alive at that time.
This song was not a problem for me when it came out, it was more thought provoking...

Nope not a problem at allllll. Us Baby Boomers who were teens in the 70s didn't use seat belts, bike helmets AND we smoked cigarettes. We were way more tolerant and tuff than this super sensitive and super soft generation today. AND....we had fun and were mostly happy.
It was a look into what our future could be if we are not careful. Think about it, we are discussing AI. So maybe not so far fetched.

I'm actually shocked that you think this song would "be a problem" if it came out today, even by the the sensitive woke crowd.
It wasn't a problem back then and it wouldn't be a problem today. The only difference is now most people would say the timeline for the things in the song are coming thousands of years sooner than the song predicts.
It's just a song... I don't see where this could be a problem for anyone. I just don't get it. We shouldn't have to walk on eggshells our whole life. There's a silly song called "Let It All Hang out." By The Ombre's. It's about being uninhibited. Freedom. Try it.
