Bill I want to say that I agree entirely with Neil about educating our most ignorant. I am someone who was spoon fed anti-intellectual, religious extremist information every day of my life. I was a mother prepared to do the same to my son. And my entire life was turned around by patient anthropology professor at a community college who taught me how to question myself. I'm a PhD student of bioanthropology now, and I am so thankful that I have changed the course of mine and my son's life away from my ignorance and bigotry. Education should never discriminate. And sometimes we need to be lovingly taught how not to be assholes, because we were raised that way.

The issue is he doesn’t seem to truly understand fundamentalists and how entrenched they’ve made their position…. One thing I really loved abt Dr. Tyson is the clarity of his mind & thought process. When a person thinks clearly & explains it clearly to someone who might not have the same understanding of a problem (or knowledge) then that person will engage in learning & will able to solve problems.
And I wonder why he is able to do that...empathy?
That's what I love about him. He's true genius with intellectual humility. He'll tell you when he doesn't specifically know something, but he always has a well informed opinion based on something he does know. And really, isn't that all you can ask for in a person?
You have a room full of people like Neil who all have different areas of expertise, you could solve world peace in a decade
Dr. Neil should run for office, but he is part of the problem with the centrist left that wants to be tolerating and inclusive for everyone. People don't change. War, war never changes.

I love Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson's response about how Russians and Americans are NOT fighting at the space station. Because they look down and see the world as a whole. I have to say as a young RARE form of cancer survivor and who runs an online support group FOR this, that I have experienced the exact same thing. People across the entire world who are ALL scared together, alone, looking for answers, and someone who can help them and that they in turn can also help. I have seen it time and time again. People who initially I was afraid of accepting into the (private) group, well within a matter of minutes that gets washed away and we just see each other as brothers and sisters who are fighting the exact same enemy inside of our bodies. The type of cancer we all have is a form of breast cancer, but one that no one has ever hard of and it only accounts for less than 1/10th of 1% of all the different forms of breast cancers. So you can imagine how hard it is finding another person with it. I am from the US, but have talked with, cried with, and given each other mutual emotional support who live in every single continent in the world (except Antarctica, so far, lol.) -- Let me tell you, a cancer diagnosis really makes your soul evolve. It is something that I HATE more than anything, and that has stolen some of the very best people brutally. But during the fight, your SOUL just shines through and we see each other as literally each other. I have seen the same things with people who are working together to save or interact with an animal, a child, or just someone who needs help. It breaks down our barriers instantly and the best in our humanity comes out. It's one of the reasons I love the movie WAR HORSE so much. And I also love Abraham Lincoln's quote, "When I do good, I feel good. When I do bad, I feel bad. That is my religion."

One night I was at his house with other people and we were all yapping about this side vs. that side, and talkin about politics when Ricky, who was supposed to be sound asleep under his blanket in his room, yelled out, "IT'S ALL BULLSHIT! 4 people on the panel excluding Bill and Neil alone spoke and rambled on for 5 minutes when they all have 10 minutes between them.
Dr. Tyson is always so graceful when surrounded by negativity and lower intelligence, even when it's the condescending host smirking, laughing, and doing the jazz hands up/jazz hands down "OHHH-KAYYY" that makes whatever he just said instantly become fact.

I'm tired of this false equivalency between Russia and the USA. The last time the USA invaded and annexed and neighbouring land was 1848. Russia pulled the same shit in Georgia in 2008, Crimea in 2014 and it's ongoing efforts to take the Donbass region. If tomorrow trump invades Quebec and takes everything south of the Saint Lawrence river or annexes Sonora then we can talk.

Unwilling to be educated
2 things we can teach students early in their age; critical thinking & personal financial mgmt. These two things can go a long way & can make one a better person (and a informed citizen).
We never learned, at the highest level of gifted or AP classes in high school, economics (maybe there was an elective) or how to manage finances. They started a program to teach kids how to do basic things, like balance a checkbook, which is kind of obvious, but it fizzled out quickly. Actual economics and what money is and what it's based on, what the economy really is, was never taught when I was in school.
Empathy is important too, not sure if it's easy to teach. I feel like films and books taught me the best in that regard.
In Canada we have economics and accounting in high school. Very important, one of the concepts in basic psychology is Maslow's Hierarchy. The base is physiological and safety needs. Notice how all of the poor are struggling to meet these needs and often people cannot maintain collective values in those conditions. As brutal as this sounds, learning financial management first is the most important. Once people are financially secure they can worry about becoming good people, the goal should be to prevent financial insecurity so people don't resort to things they normally wouldn't.
Boy howdy ain't that the truth! Dr. Tyson inadvertently touched on that; "when somebody buys a car, they don't think 'how am I gonna pay for this?'" People don't know how interest works, how much that car is really going to cost after five years...all they see is that cash back dealer incentive and low! low! monthly payment. Lack of financial education is what allows politicians to push BS like trickle-down economics and "tax cuts for corps create jobs" and get people to buy into it.
+Bob, Exactly, the real reason behind all of that is the push for sales. My parents were very old fashioned, they actually bought everything and I grew up to value that. Nowadays everything has become cash flow based. Cell phones, cars, homes, everything has a financing plan, its ridiculous and its all on top of your property taxes, insurance, utilities, cell phone bills, internet, tv, weekly groceries. People don't understand the risks associated with these plans, and it doesn't help that practically every salesperson is perfectly willing to accommodate someone no matter their background so they get a sale. People end up stuck with expenses that take up all of their income, then when something happens they have no savings to deal with it and go into debt if they aren't already.

Ukraine is a mess. It's really two wars in one. The first one, technically a civil war, places limits as to how to help. The second war is Russia vs Ukraine, and by proxy, the West.
If there is too much from western powers it will push the conflict into a regional war. None of Russia's neighbors like them, and that's about all Russia can really do. Now quite a few of those neighbors are NATO and that's a big problem for Russia. Also Putin is just using the same old play book of look externally when you have an internal problem. In addition to that old play book they are ising another old play book of hegemony in Europe for Russia. This is what they did with the USSR and it's a major part of their problems today.
Russia is very susceptible to sabotage since the bulk of the country's population and infrastructure is based in Europe. They learned from Napoleon and Germany that the West can invade. Not too sure why they didn't move things further East after WWll but they did not. All these former USSR countries that are not Russia have Russians because of internal migrations. That's why Ukraine is dealing with a bit of a sham civil war...those people are intentionally placed there by a country that no longer exists. Want to be Russian? Move there, it's right next door.
So Russia is stuck, with an unwinable war...with sanctions...with a repressed population. If Putin wasn't so hell bent on sticking it to the West, the war in Ukraine would have ended long ago. The war in Syria would have ended long ago. The current sanctions would have ended long ago. Russia wouldn't have the bulk of the issues it has today.
Hopefully someone over there can replace Putin and Russia can become a prosperous country and so could Ukraine.
Bill is right that some just won't ever learn, but as a teacher, I have always understood Neil's point that it is not about 'passing on information', or 'filling an empty vessel'. It's about challenging presumptions and facilitating the student's understanding. They have to own and control the process or it will never be fully understood.

1: Ukraine has been interested in joining NATO and trading with the EU for longer than I suspect you've been alive.
2: If you can't see how an attack on a sovereign state is effectively an attack on the United States then you have no business making political commentary. I'll be polite and spell it out for you. If the (as the begrudgingly recognized "protectors of freedom") United States, fails to act when the sovereignty of a nation is threatened, especially a nation whose sovereignty is more closely guaranteed than others (NATO/EU interests vs. "rest of the world"), then any attack in which the United States does nothing makes the United States look weak, and a weak United States is not worth respecting in terms of trade deals and military presence (a presence which in turn acts as an additional bargain chip to help garner those better trade deals). I could keep going, but this is already too long so we'll move on to~
3: Tac Nukes? No. The main reason Russia invaded and annexed part of Ukraine was to prevent it from losing a monopoly on trade in the region. Free trade with the EU would have a devastating impact on Russia's economy. None of this is solved by removing the very infrastructure you intend to seize, and "polite military aggression" is far more salable then "nukes". The secondary reason was to weaken the United States and the EU's bonds with its allies. And, tertiary to all of that, to weaken their (EU/US) bargaining power worldwide.
As to the OP: I don't think "making Ivan bleed" is WW3 talk unless you just wanted to escalate to the highest possible level. You forget how much the Soviets suffered in their contest for power against the United States - they BLED for it, for 44 years after WW2 ended. Everything from the Gulags to mass murder - all in an effort to convince themselves and the world that their communist experiment worked. There are many ways to bleed a country far before it becomes outright war.
Kisama - "Making Ivan bleed" is as belligerent rhetoric as it gets. The blood refers to outright violence, and the "Ivan" has straight-out ethnic and tribalistic undertones (referring to the Russian people or your average Russian person, as opposed to the government or the political entity). Max Brooks wants outright war. Either that, or he's just overdoing it with his usual macho bullshit rhetoric which he knows wouldn't dare act out a quarter of it if shit hits the fan in real life, and political anchors should stop taking him seriously.

Professor Yuval Harari had a very interesting perspective on the reason behind the growing interest in apocalyptic/post-apocalyptic stories, etc.
I can't recommend his lectures and books enough.
What was the jist of it?
If you're not familiar with the one of the main points of his first book, it's rather difficult to explain. That's the reason I didn't include an explanation in my initial comment.
It goes into the need for inter-subjective fictions for the function of human civilisation, e.g. religion, nationhood, economic systems (corporations & money), etc.
In an age of rapid technological and socio-political change and globalisation, and with the realisation that age-old systems (religious practices & political systems) aren't as capable as they were in the past, people find themselves confused and lost. These feelings lead them to sense a complete collapse of society making apocalyptic premonitions and stories attractive.
I'm sorry, I can't do it justice at all. I tried, because not doing so would have be rude but I'm no substitute for his words.
Please read his books and listen to his talks. The issues he discusses are extremely important for humanity, and with the majority of the media so distracted by more trivial issues we may miss our chance to handle them in the best way possible.
For a snapshot of his philosophies one should at least read his latest book 21 Lessons for the 21st Century, but I would very strongly recommend Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind, as well. His second book Homo Deus was good, but I found it to be more of an extended epilogue on Sapiens than a stand-alone.

I should also say that I'm very pleased to see Max Brooks out and about. His talks on these topics are always interesting.

There are degrees to everything and you can understand a lot from the rhetoric someone uses. I wonder if the panel knows that there's such a thing as sharing a book. That's basically what a library is: Book sharing. Libraries buy top sellers/top requests all the damn time, and those get shared among a lot of people. One book sale does not mean that only one person has read that one book. It's safe to bet that many unrecorded more have read the book than the sales alone indicate.
Yes, and not only that but Bill was assuming that everyone in the country who believes in "objective reality" bought Neil's book, which is obviously not the case. Considering that probably a very small percentage of people who believe in objective reality purchased the book, in addition to book sharing and the fact that many people in the country are children, etc. Neil was right that 1M+ sales is a good number.

One million copies sold to 7 billion people is still huge. Bill didn't have a good point and didn't even understand the comment that an English book is sold around the world and even when Neil said it was translated into 60 languages he didn't even incorporate that into his wrong point. He could have said "see, so it's even less people who read this book in America."
The point is obviously that a popular science book still can be at the top of the sales. How can you demand more from a book than being one of the best selling ones for over a year? Bill seemed very off this week, as in letting his panel monger war and then he just must hold on to other people being stupid and unteachable. I guess being over 60 and still having the political ideas of a stoned 13 year old kid, Bill knows a thing or two about being unteachable.

Wtf are you talking about. California has under Democratic rule completely turned its budget around to a 9 Billion surplus and has become by itself the fifth biggest economy in the world. The California budget crisis, where they were they had like a 20 Billion deficit, was under the GOP with Arnold.

love Neil Tyson. saw him live in St.Louis and it was amazing and really puts the world and universe into perspective. We are so insignificant and we need to fight to be in a part of this life and we shouldnt take it for granted.

Max Brooks is a brilliant author. Hes a bit too liberal for my tastes but very intelligent and well informed.
Neil is an amazing educator. We should be honored that he has decided to take up the mantle to educate us all (whether we are in school or not) on the subject of the cosmos. You can see how much he doesn't care about instigating a war, mentioning how we are all one. If only more people thought like him in this world...keep it up Neil, we need more people like you.

Let's get back to acting like obnoxious teenage boys!" I love Bill Maher, he is hands down my favorite social commentator, but that was irritating as hell. I suppose Bill being a comedian, he is kind of conditioned to look for opportunities to be funny, and that's cool, but when you keep interrupting somebody, and keep changing their serious note to one of levity, something's wrong. I've been watching Bill for years, ever since Politically Incorrect, and he's always tended to do that a little. It's one of the few things I don't like about him. You're right, it tends to keep the conversations pretty shallow.

After all, didn't the people vote for the saner candidate ? It is only because of a flaw in the voting system that Mr Trump got elected. WHich makes me think that maybe the next amendment to add to the american constituion had better be: "one citizen equals one vote".

I majored in Philosophy at Frankfurt University and let me tell you that Chomsky is so far from being an actual philosopher that his work isn't even disregarded.
