- Hidemaro Fujibayashi, the genius director of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, isn't new to the franchise - in fact, he's been working on Zelda for nearly a quarter of century. From Oracles of Seasons and Oracles of Ages to Minish Cap and Four Swords to Skyward Sword, Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, Hidemaro Fujibayashi has a long history with Zelda. Just recently @kitandkrysta called him a "special unicorn" and a "genius". In this video, we're going to find out everything we can about the man himself - his background, his journey, his interests and passions.
All quotes are accurate to their original translations although I have occasionally merged quotes from different sources to avoid repetition.

Man Fujibyashi is going to be the new Aonuma for future Nintendo gamers with two critically acclaimed Zelda games under his belt.
Four really, with the oracle games.
Five if you count Skyward Sword’s recent resurgence in popularity
Honestly the progression from Skyward Sword to BotW is still probably one of the most interesting transitions I've seen in terms of game design. With how much carries over over from the former yet changes in scope, it's a testament to how flexible and varied his approach to designing games is.
Completely agree!
I also heard it could be read as tiers of the kingdom, meaning the sky, the ground and the depths. Great title! And great video!
Never heard this but amazing catch!! And thanks!
@@nintendoforecast tears as in the Dragon Tears, tears as in the "You're Tearing me apart Lisa" and maybe tiers? hmm, never thought of tiers
Every Nintendo Dreamteam member is an Icon!
True!
I'm so glad someone finally did a video of Fujibayashi!!
my favorite item from Minish Cap (rather than the gust jar) that couldve been well implemented into the Switch titles was the Mole Mits... or from Twilight Princess the Double Clawshot was a vast improvement to the hookshot and I was hoping to see it return... if there was Hand-Equipment itd make some sense, but they leaned heavily into the PurahPad Abilities rather than item management... a few small issues with the latest one but still I'm very glad we're blessed with such passionate people at Nintendo.
I'm glad I found this video. I have been thinking a lot lately about Fujibayashi. I was discussing the Capcom zelda games with a coworker and realized just how long he had been working on Zelda yet there is very little discussion from fans.
valuable content ! thanks for giving this man & history the time and care they deserve, learning a lot!~
I had no idea that he has directed so many Zelda games - and all of them great.
Skyward Sword sucked tho.
What a surprisingly fun story! Great video!
Thank you!
Amazing video, I hope your channel blows up!
Thank you so much!
Good video! One thing that I don't believe was mentioned was an influence of BotW was seen in A Link Between Worlds where you could rent out every special item near the beginning of the game and so could go anywhere and do the dungeons in any order which is similar to BotW once you leave the Great Plateau.
Really good point. I didn't mention ALBW as Fujibayashi isn't credited in it but you have to think ALBW was a big proof of concept for what became BotW.
Love this documentary style video! A good type of video, next to the usual stuff :)
Thank you!
Great job, subbed! Was shocked to see so few subs, you deserve way more
Thank you so much! Great to have you with us!
Only 255 subs? You deserve way more. Excellent video.
Thank you!
This is great, keep this up, hope you get lots of subs.
Awesome video! Hope in the future he’ll be recognized more as one of those legendary Nintendo devs
Thanks! And yeah, I do feel like in decades to come he'll seem a much bigger figure in the franchise's history.
You’re putting out amazing content! Gotta get you on the podcast sometime
Thank you! Sounds good!
Very good video ! I hope people will talk more about him ! His Nintendo journey is far from over !
Thank you!
this is blake stackhouse i love you thank you for this game. I am always with you, keep doing what you do
What is being documented here is “creativity” he took swings and hit, took swings and missed, but he never abandoned learning or preserving from what worked, and never shied away from completely taking back to square one what doesn’t. This is a creative who cares about one thing : user enjoyment. And thank god we have him.
Amazing comment. Completely agree about that perseverance.
I LIKE LONGER FORM CONTENT. subbed.
really great stuff here....consider going down the rabbit hole on Fujibayashi's story footprint on the series...
I also in super interested in this dev side you teased next.
Another idea of something to look into is Sammy Hall.
Sammy Hall's a really interesting idea - thanks! Story footprint might be trickier to pin down as it seems story is reverse engineered from the mechanics but I'll look. The video I teased is still a week or two off but I do have an Aonuma vid coming later this week. By the way, just discovering your channel and watching your Forgotten Temple video - absolutely amazing!
i loved it great work (:
Thank you so much!
Great video! Fujibayashi really should be talked more about, I always hear people bringing up Aonuma alone. Also, I'm sorry if this is an annoying suggestion, and it's probably something you're aware of, but upgrading your microphone could really boost the quality that you already put into your videos.
Thank you! Thanks for the tip on the audio - yes, it's a bit of a work in progress.
Great video
Thanks!
Really neat break from your usual content. Game devs rarely get the same sorta art appreciation you see aimed at the likes of Spielberg or Hitchcock.
Yes, although Nintendo is particularly secretive making it tricky. (And thanks!)
I love the Oracle Zelda games! Def my top faves. I wish they would do a remake. But for now, I’m enjoying them in my 3ds. :)
I definitely agree,I love the oracle games and I would love a remake like links awakening on the switch (or its successor 😍)
I'd always wanted the magnetic gloves to return at some point, only recently realizing magnesis is basically just that, and ultrahand is just even better. I can't understand those that just look at it as something tedious...I find myself hoping that DLC adds even more stuff to put together with different functionality to make it even more versatile a tool.
Me too. Amazing power.
It's tedious in its application more than in concept. I way preferred Magnesis, not because it was a better ability, but because it was used in less tedious scenarios.
@An Meme lol my skill issues are fine my man. i still find it tedious. different people look for different things in games.
The oracle games are my favorite 2d Zelda games
Very good video!
Thank you!
Nice vid
Thanks!
Wait are you new to CZcams? Sounds like you have experience and that says something, or your just really good at making presentations
Fairly new. Glad you're enjoying the content!
Amazing video!
Thank you!

26:10 It's so cool to me that his early inspiration for skydiving got reaoized in the very last segment of TotK with that final skydive section :) I can imagine he was really really happy with that payoff
Yes, I noticed that. Also he finally got

@@nintendoforecast YESSS I NOTICED THAT TOO!!!! I'm so happy he's gotten to manifest so many of the things he wanted to do with Zelda :) It's really nice!! Hopefully he gets that new 2D Zelda next 🤞
Just wanted to tell you that you can remove the controls guide of the NSO that you see under the gameplay by going into the settings for each console's app.
Great tip - thank you!
I love the Oracle games.
It is always a pleasure to watch a good video essay about the backgrounds of my favourite games 😊. This was clearly a lot of work and good research.
Interestingly, it was easier for me to follow our voice in the last half of the video than the first. Considering i am not a native speaker, i still would not say it was the information or content (fist half was jam packed) but more so in accentuations. Maybe? I would love to see you grow as a channel and hope you do not mind this little feedback. It is not meant to hurt! This was a awesome video!
Thank you! And I don't mind at all, this is great feedback - I appreciate it all! :)
Naming your characters works because a character doesn't really exist until they are named. It's weird but it's true.
Without a name, you just have some intangible set of characteristics that you've reasoning out that you need in a certain situation; "Well they need to be such-and-such a race and have such-and-such an occupation and live in and around Somewhere-or-other Village."
This can be a tough step to make, and I always have my own anxieties about it, because once a character is formed, they can be judged. Both by others and by your harshest critic of all which is typically yourself.
If you imagine someone approaching you about your work before the character has name and they say, "So this would mean he have a blanketi-blank personality? that doesn't sound right." -- You can always be like, "Oh no, I haven't decided that yet."
And so you never do.
Once the character has a name, it's like a leap of faith. Now you have to resolve the contradiction and stop being so vague.
I've managed to make characters without this step in the past, but i now know why leaving characters without names can be a detriment.
Really interesting and thought provoking point!
he is going to be the next producer (unless he turns it down for some reason)
I'd assume so especially since Aonuma's been talking about find a successor since at least as far back as 2015 and this period has seen Fujibayashi's ascendancy. I guess Daiki Iwamoto (director of Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks and mainstay of the Zelda team since Ocarina) may have seniority though.
Yo that 2D Zelda model for BotW is nuts.
It is!
This guy is a genious.
Hoe do you have less then 500 subs? Great video.
Thank you!
0:30 why he pointing at Urbosa like that? >.>
I think he was indicating his favourite character.
I always refer fo him as Aonaumas Padawan.
im the 200th subcriber
Amazing! Welcome aboard!
I have a question for the Producer. Why did you make Link Weaker in Tears Of The Kingdom than Breath Of The Wild???
I don't think Fujibayashi even knows about this video but my guess is that he wanted people to use the fuse and ultra hand abilities to power up.
But where the unbreakable master sword?, master sword fusion to mimic other swords properties plus unbreakable until decide to unfused the fused sword , etc eh , eh ? The sword actually becoming the master sword , mind blown 🤯.
This guy legit looks 35 years old, not 50 lmao
👍🧠👌.
What a great guy he is for providing the best entertainment and adventure of my lifetime. Im a half century this year and still playing. Sorry kids not right now Im playing Zelda.😂😂😂
Has to be done!
So is “link between worlds” considered a 2D game?
Hmm, I think it still counts as one. How would you categorise it though?
Has he played Zelda before?
The man that transformed my favorite series in a boredom like every other boring open world like there. Love his 2d Zelda games though.
@1:55 The game hasn't changed as much!? BotW and TotK are barely Zelda games..
I also don't think someone that works with a WHOLE lot of talented people should really be called a genius.. Sure these games are good, polished and entertaining. But it's just the configuration and content together that makes these "Zelda" releases so great! It's also their appeal to the masses.. because it certainly doesn't do anything really new or revolutionary that hasn't been done before.
Very good point on it not being an individual genius.
If you consider copy and pasting botw genius than totk is "amazing".
Research what a sequel means
Genius? He spent over a decade making two of the most disappointing zelda games. At least BOTW was original. TOTK was a reskin...
Research what a sequel means
Yeah totally a reskin, let's ignore the fact that they added 2 whole maps, new weapon system, crafting system, new story, new armor, new items, more enemy variety, more quests, more collectables and shrines, new temples with new bosses, and it's a sequel.
@@fartlordsmellytoe3690 two whole maps? Where? It's the same map, and basically just empty. You just dont notice cuz it's dark. Most of those skins are identical to before. They made new shrines and quests sure. Added to the sandbox with ultra hand yeah. But they built the same game, realized it's the same game.
@@JMPhotography01 the game factually can't be a reskin if it has new gameplay systems, new maps, and new content, new story, new music, caves, and wells, use your brain and realize this is a sequel, a continuation of breath of the wild they literally have to use the same map to have it make sense at all. They did the same thing with majoras mask years ago and yet people didnt care, its fine to dislike the game or the direction their going with zelda but don't be ignorant and claim things that make no sense, it makes you seem unintelligent.
@@JMPhotography01 again let me make a list of things this game has done that breath of the wild didn't have.
New story
Caves
More enemy variety
New abilities (you can make a car or plane)
Access to the sky
Temples are back
More varied bosses
New quests
More shrines
More collectables
More armor
All DLC and amiibo armor are able to be gotten without spending money
New underground map filled with bosses, armor, and mining stations
More music
So this is who we blame for not having traditional dungeons anymore.
botw and totk puzzles are easy so by their standards are cheap and a failure
He was also responsible for the very complicated and intricate dungeons of Skyward Sword of course. It is curious they acknowledged the criticism of BotW by reintroducing dungeon theming but didn't change the structure.
who care about dungeon?
not all game made for you.. i hate dungeon game..
@@zultriova89 literally every longtime og Zelda player
@@_itsmunah you OG player already playing so much dungeon game and still not enough?? seem like he cant make something different this time and even make the game sold more than 3 million.. oh waittt..
@@zultriova89 if you hate dungeon games then play a different game and stop trying to change this franchise. New players are the issue. Zelda was made and known for its dungeons and story. Always has been. The biggest complaints for just about everything I see from everyone is dungeons and story for totk. Why would anyone want a dungeon that only consists of flipping 5 levers. It’s no one’s fault but your own you can’t figure out how to complete a traditional Zelda dungeon. I like how people argue points on previous games that they weren’t even alive to play back then.
Instead new players like you run around makings dicks out of logs. You hold no weight in this argument. Go play Minecraft.
Heh. The game is overated
DAMN U NINTENDO, I HATE IT WHEN U MAKE ME USE MY BRAIN!!!!!!!!! I JUST WANT TO KILL DRAGONS!!!!!!!!!! I FAIL AT BUILDING A DEATHSTAR!!!!!!!!!
hes the Quentin Tarantino of the Zelda universe... Divisive, aesthetic over story, probably overrated.
