    It is a blessing to find a good review paper if you have to read into a new topic. Props to all the people who write these! In my field (material science) a very wide range of topics have to be combined (mostly from solid state physics, chemistry and and a good amount of engineering mindset). As a professor of mine told us in our first semester " We are the guys who know enough from every topic to work but nothing as deep as a pure chemist or physicist." it is even more important to find good material to learn about new effects.
    Thank you so much for your effort!

    Congratulations on getting published. It's totally ok to feel proud about doing good work. It's great that you take the time to make videos and explain the process to the rest of us that are not in grad school. Keep up the positive attitude! I write software and sometimes when I look at older code I think to myself, Wow how did I ever write that? It's our minds keeping us humble. :)

    Thats amazing! congratulations! Is it common that phd students in the US publish something as first author during their phd? In germany thats virtually unheard of, because projects are designed to culminate in one final paper that will be the basis for your actual thesis. Also I have never heard of a phd student publishing a review, so extra props to you!

    • @AlexDainisPhD
      @AlexDainisPhD  Před 6 lety +1

      Thank you! Yes, PhD students typically publish as first author on their projects here - depending on the program, there are often requirements on *how many* first author pubs you need before you can graduate. Thankfully mine is only one (though the review doesn't count!).

    Interesting paper. Doesnt half give you pause though, when discussing the potential power of the treatment and in particular CRISPR, while also noting the disparity in which populations are being covered. Like some kind of unintentional eugenics.
    but then I suppose a lot of great science has the potential to do a lot of harm. Hopefully, they can keep an eye on it without hampering progress too much.

    Next question, "who should be writing these things?" My advisor and a post-doc wrote this (arxiv.org/abs/0803.0901v2 ) review article that is 56 pages, and this other one (arxiv.org/abs/0903.1096v2 ) that is 95 pages. It seems to me that review articles are written by more senior people the older the field of study is. These papers are on Theoretical Nuclear Physics and quark-gluon plasma. The experimentalists have been looking for and then studying this stuff for 30 years. The theory is around 60 years old. Consumer grade genetics has been around for about 5 years, making precision medicine about 10 years old. Your stuff is really new. My stuff is old enough my graphing calculator could do the numerical analysis that delivered the first papers.
