      @grimauc Před 4 měsíci +5

      theres a lot of inconsistencies when trying to work out the size of the one piece planet. ive seen calculations done that place it at: 2-3x the size; 10x the size, and at the extremes, either 3,000x the size, or 0.0015x the size
      0.0015 is the only one i remember the reasoning for, i think the first time the sunny used coup de burst, they flew 1km away, and there wasnt anything in sight from before they used it, indicating that the horizon on the planet is at most 1km away, (a planet with a 1km horizon would have a radius of roughly 10km, unlike earths 6,000km)
      i think the general consensus though, is that the one piece world is somewhat bigger than earth, just not know how much bigger

      It had 6 moon once probably (from the Ohara model). But in the current timeline, there is only one moon (where enel went and HQ of space pirates).

      @mlmf2012 Před 9 měsíci +53

      @flusel4949 it is from the measurement of the sandora river which which vivi states is 50km wide. Usopp asked her how far to the other side (of where they are currently crossing) indicating she wasnt refering to the river's mouth but the "thinner" sections inside the country. For reference australia is 4,000km wide from east to west, so just 80 sandora rivers side by side would cover the whole continent

    You're forgetting a crucial detail, there, MatPat! It's true that the mountains in California cast a rain shadow over the regions to the east, but that region is almost entirely dry land. If the world of One Piece is 90% water, then most of the area affected by the 'rain shadow' will be ocean. Almost all rain that falls on land starts in the ocean. While the area won't be receiving moisture from the west, it will have its own ocean to contribute moisture to the air.

One Piece world's regional weather has a much more significant effect on the climate than global monsoons, for example, Little Garden is a tropical island, the one near it, Drum Island is a tundra, and Alabasta is a desert. 2. There are global deep water current systems explained in the Fish-man Island arc that connect the world's oceans other than the Reverse Mountain.
    One of the weirdest natural phenomena in the One Piece world is the fact that there is breathable air as far out as the moon, shown in Enel's (lightning god guy) coverage story.

    The rain shadow affect does not apply to islands. The moisture that is removed in the rain shadow affect comes from the ocean which they are all surrounded by. If it was all land on the other side of the redline it would apply but since it’s immediately more ocean it has no bearing. Also this over abundance of ocean would lead to regular rain storms which may be where most of these lands get their water from.

Something he neglected to mention, the One Piece world is nearly 3 times larger than earth, so the effects mentioned in the video wouldn’t be as nearly as drastic as if they were to happen in the real world. I think Oda did perfect portrayed the actual struggles perfectly, the islands visited could easily be justified with logic.

    • @Sylfa
      @Sylfa Před 9 měsíci +9

      Ocean to cloud coverage is a bit difficult to make hard predictions for, as far as I know. Basically, more ocean to land doesn't mean less rainfall, it likely means *more* rainfall. And while the wind crossing the red line *would* dehydrate the down-wind air, it's still over a great ocean, the drying effect is going to be very temporary. Combine that with the massively larger scale, someone has made the argument that just one area is the size of earth, another one pointed out that a river on one island was 50km wide, putting that island on the scale of Australia. And now here the claim that the world is ~3 times larger.
      I don't know which claim is more correct, but even on an Earth scale version of this planet I don't foresee too much drought downwind of the red line. Frankly, unless I'm mistaken it has more to do with the position of the planet within their suns Goldilock Zone than the percentage of ocean to landmass. Granted, I could very well be wrong here. I'm sure an actual meteorologist would have more nuanced opinion about it.
      It just seems like you have to specifically replace Earth's land distribution to that of One Piece to get the very specific results being discussed. And I still find that questionable. Just look at Earths history, what did Pangea look like for instance? Being one super continent it put the "salty oceans" further away from the coasts, yet it was arid and hot for large periods of time. The lack of nearby ocean to form clouds would have an effect on the interior.
      And all of this doesn't really effect the chance of it being something that could exist. All you need is the right balance of sun to water, and throw in a few evolutions in plants, fungi, and bacteria that take advantage of the salty coast lines and you could have a perfectly working eco system.
      The discussion is more along the lines of, what if we terraformed Earth to look like One Piece.

      With pretty consistent rainfall, they would use rain collectors and large storage tanks as a way to get fresh water supplies. Matt is right that you can’t tap underwater springs for water on most islands, but there should be plenty of rain and also plenty of trade ships to transport things like food and water as well.

    Matpat you missed a crucial part of the one-piece world that the north, east ,west and south seas are called that way because they are in that direction and the redline doesn't divide the globe in north-south direction rather in a diagonal way from northeast to southwest and vice-versa for the grandline, while it might not make any difference for the theory (maybe) but makes a huge difference in how the weather might work as the heat distribution will change drastically meaning the east n west seas might not be as inhabitable as they seem and this is backed by the characters in the show itself ,for example when the map of the world is shown in the show. Also the size of the planet makes a big impact on everything else it has. I hope you see this and think about it and I hope to see the next videos to be a bit more accurate. And don't feel bad I actually loved the video just thought that I should point out this thing even though it might not be that big or cause an significant impact. Also, we hear pretty early that East Blue is considered the "easiest" sea, whereas North and South are generally considered the "hardest". It would make sense for the equatorial East and West seas to have it considerably easier than the polar capped North and South seas.

  • @AnimeOtakuDrew
    @AnimeOtakuDrew Před 9 měsíci +238

    I agree that the Calm Belts would be devastating for the ecosystems all over the One Piece world, but I think you're forgetting one key factor when discussing the effect of the Red Line. When the sea winds coming in off the Pacific are stopped by the Cascade Mountains, it turns the other side of the Cascades into a massive desert because that area is a vast stretch of land with very little water of its own, therefore it can't sustain a normal cycle of evaporation and precipitation. However, in the case of the Red Line, the area where the rain shadow would be located is yet another vast ocean that covers half the planet, so that water would be able to evaporate normally and return to the surface as rain. (By the way, even if it DID work the way you described, it wouldn't affect EVERYTHING east of the Red Line; the rain shadow wouldn't extend all the way to where the Red Line crosses again so half of the planet would be barren no more than the rain shadow of the Cascade Mountains renders everything to their east inhospitable. Of course the area immediately to the east of the Cascades is desert, and its effect extend as far as the western parts of Texas and Oklahoma, but beyond that are very fertile and thriving plains and forests that reach almost all the way to the Atlantic. The rain shadow would only effect at most one-quarter of the area to the east of the Red Line, and this would not be exclusively in the East Blue, South Blue, and the Paradise half of the Grand Line; you're not thinking in three dimensions. at the other end of those three seas, we would find the prevailing east-blowing winds being stopped by the Red Line and unable to reach the North Blue, West Blue, and New World, so that area would also experience a rain shadow the same as the eastern end of the others, but this is all rendered moot, as I said, because there is plenty of water there for its own evaporation/precipitation cycle.) And I won't even go into how a degree of weather control has been figured out in the One Piece world as covered in the Alabasta Arc.
    As for the lack of fresh water, just think about this. People develop technologies that solve problems, with the biggest problems being the highest priority. Because the need for fresh water would have been a VERY large problem (probably the biggest problem in the One Piece world), it would have be the focus of many a scientist and inventor, so I have no doubt whatsoever that desalination technology has not only been developed, but is in fact commonplace and has been refined and streamlined far beyond what the real world has since invention is driven by need. Furthermore, because the need is so prevalent, I am sure that many people have developed desalination technology independent of each other and/or have built on the technology invented by others. In short, for such a common need, it wouldn't even be possible for the wealthy to hoard the desalination technology as someone else would just invent it on their own again and again until it is finally created by someone altruistic enough to share it with the whole world freely (and since we know for a fact that the One Piece world has been in its current state and occupied by "civilized" people with the same approximate technological level for AT LEAST the last 800 years, not to mention the Void Century and the higher technology they had then, it is entirely feasible for that to have happened by now).
    In other words, the only major climatological issue would be the Calm Belts, and depending on EXACTLY how far they reach, there could still be tropical waters beyond them that would allow for currents to spread warmer waters. I personally agree with the theory that the One Piece world is tilted on an axis that places the poles in the North and South Blue, respectively, meaning the equator, rather than following the Grand Line, would go through the middle of the East and West Blue while allowing the southern tips of the North Blue and the northern tips of the South Blue to extend well into the tropical regions. In essence, the Red line and the Grand Line would for a giant X. How much of the North and South Blue extend into tropical waters is still dependent upon the breadth of the Grand Line and the Calm Belts, but on MOST of the maps Oda has drawn in the series it doesn't seem SUPER wide, so I think it should work out.
    Sorry this ended up so long, but I just had to address some important holes in your theory.

      I know very little about the One Piece world, though it fascinates me, and I had many thoughts exactly the same as yours from a world building perspective. I don't think it would necessarily be as harsh with desert vs winter wasteland as said in Mat's video, the tilted axis seems like it would have effects too like you say. Desalination tech would definitely be a super high priority for such a culture, lacking in natural fresh water. Loved the discussion prompted by the video, but glad I wasn't the only one thinking there are other solutions and possibilities. Even in the real world, there are places such as Montana/Alberta that, although on the far side of the Cascades and drier than Oregon/British Columbia, are far from deserts. Though maybe that is another phenomena, or due to their latitude, I am no expert on any of these things...

    You got a major error in your theory that may change your calculations, and it's an error a lot of people make including One Piece fans themselves. The Grand Line is NOT the equator, and the Red Line is NOT the prime meridian.
    Both travel diagonally around the planet, making an X that crossed the equator on both sides of the planet if you view it with the North Pole (and North Blue) at the top.
    Oda recently clarified this in recent chapters that Grand Line does not travel straight East to West, and instead wraps diagonally around the planet.
    The calm belts also may not stop all water, as we don't know about the deep currents that cycle the water, but so far down it's pointless for ships. But that just a theory, an anime theory.

    Interestingly, the first major arc in the Grand Line (the stuff actually just East of the Red Line) DO take place on extremely arid islands where food and rainwater are scarce. A huge drought is the central conflict of the Alabasta saga, the first main one in the area MatPat talks about here. It may be just a coincidence, but maybe Oda considered some of this as well. 🤔

    Something funny is that there's an martial art named Rokushiki which reveals that the atmosphere in one piece is different. There is a technique that allows you to "step on" flat air as if it was solid. It seems it exploits something along to surface tension, which suggests air in OP is more dense/has different properties compared to our own.

      You can support this with the different types of clouds in the world of one piece. With the occurance of sky islands from 'Imperial Cumilus' clouds (and many others we learn about in Skypeia) within the verse. Who says the air doesn't have something to do with this and vice versa? The air density in OP could easily be slighty different, It just attests to how well Odas built the world.

      @@HerbaMachina it actually is near finished we're over halfway and have been for a few years now, but right now there is a lot of theories on it and there is a lot of weird things oda has taken into account, ways he writes maps for instance is weird when labing things he's taking into account the axis of the planet stuff like that. He's known the ending since day 1 as a good author should have their end fleshed out before. The way he has some stuff planned out has given people a fairly strong conclusion of certain events likely. One piece theories go pretty hard into the actual lore and world building that's been thankfully able to be set up over multiple decades
