- I had a lot of fun exploring the mosques in where I live, Guangzhou. I also got to learn about the dynamic between the Hui community and mostly the Han China. In this video I discuss how Chinese people think about China's religion policy. Hope you enjoy!

The first mosque didn't have moon and crescent nor did it have a dome, moon and crescent came from ottoman empire, dome was built only because when you do azan the noise can echo and be heard clearly,
Has the Christians churches changed? Has there building changed to a square block and the cross taken off🤔
Does it matter if the first mosque had a dome or crescent? Prayer can be performed out in the open , but these domes n crescents did develop n sort of became part of Islamic culture n identity

It's a start that takes place from domes to dress code then to food , that's how you erase a culture religion n language but it's not gonna help China in general to take hold of Africa Asia n Middle East

They want China n China wants them too but at home China is scare of similar looking Chinese who happens to be Muslims

Forced to eat pork wear non Islamic clothing n more than 1600 killed 4000 houses destroyed cuz these peaceful Buddhist couldn't see them thrive rapidly.

I want to make it easy if it offends you or somehow looks strange for you.
Actually for Muslims Islam is the best thing happened to them even if they have less money or more money but life after death for Muslims is eternal life. Some strive very hard for it or some may not but by belief all of them want to be forgiven by Allah and ultimately enter into Paradise. They truly want to share this best thing with you so you can live a happy and eternal life after death and for us Muslims if we could become source of hadayah for anyone it will be benifit to us so that is the actual purpose behind so much excitation from Muslim Brothers and Sisters. I truly wish you a very happy life here and after death as well. ALLAH Kareem!
in Indonesia we have the Cheng Ho Mosque, which is a mosque with Chinese architecture, the mosque was built to honor a Chinese Muslim admiral named Cheng ho (Zheng He) who spread Islam in Southeast Asia.
I did a bit of a search and the mosque looks gorgeous! It makes me want to visit one day :) thanks for sharing😊
@@SimingLan In this case, the Indonesian government should demolish the Chinese designed mosque and build an Indonesian style mosque. Because the Chinese are doing the same.
@@thelatai5792 Well there is no specific mandatory architecture design when it comes to a mosque so it is pointless for them to do that. Mosque just has to point toward black cube in Mecca and no idol or statue inside it. Thats it.
@@thelatai5792 Yes, they can if they want. Chinese don't care about how other countries' people deal with their buildings. They can bomb it or adapt it into other styles. In the same way, Chinese gov can decide independently what a Chinese mosque should look "Chinese", which is none of your business.

Chinese Muslims don't necessarily look Arabic or dress in the Arabic traditional style, and Chinese mosques don't necessarily look Arabic either. It is a great feature of Islam that it can be embraced by such a diverse group of people.
Hi Islam in China mostly introduced through silk road which many Iranian Muslim merchants have travelled to China even some of them become residents in China which Islam introduced by them to China.

It's not just Guangzhou, if you go to Xi'an, Ninxia etc. All those oldest mosques in China share similar elements of Chinese traditional architecture. Very few exceptions are old mosque in Quanzhou which is Persian style brought in by Persian merchants but was preserved as part of World Heritage Site.

Why can't an imam do an interview without being approved by the government.
When I was a Child, I lived in the Hui Autonomous Region(Chan He district, Luoyang City), and my neighbors were Muslims. They would put up Spring couplets like us, but theirs were green. There were many beef shops on the street, and I loved their food. Living there for 13 years, can you imagine the Chinese government's policy towards minorities？the district government is a Muslim building, has a Muslim church and Eid festival, and our district president is a Hui Muslim.😊😊😊

The problem is that Islam is not just a religion of worship that we often see in the daily lives of Muslims.
Islam is a methodological system of life both individually, family, community and State.
Islam must be upheld in a comprehensive manner according to the capabilities of its adherents.
Being able to mean here is being able to be patient in carrying out God's commands and being able to accept the risks. What is certain is that the risks are multilevel, and each level of risk gets a different reward from Allah.
Islam works with most countries, in China there is more mosque than even in western countries
Now, try to think about the CHINESE culture, in a way that you thinking of Muslim. It is not only the whole system of life but it is the greatness religion of the Chinese. That here comes a real problem, how to make all kinds of religions coexisting peaceful with a greater religion aka Chinese culture for thousands of years.
Hi i may say that to be saved good works is not enough. It is not that way since salvation is by grace of God not of our own good works. This is the truth. So one must accept his gift - His son Jesus, then he will work into oneself to do good works, thats the fruit of being saved.
This is the problem of Islam, not just individuals and families. Islamic social organizations used to be very powerful. The police would shield Muslims and ordinary Han people would be oppressed. Islamic rules not only bind Muslims, but also the pork smell of Han neighbors wafts to Muslim homes and will be chased by Muslims with knives. Muslim organizations are too overbearing. In China, where China is a country of citizens, citizens act according to the law, rather than being forced to abide by Muslim rules above the law.
In modern countries, religion must exist as a philosophical thought and a custom of life. Once adopted as the creed of the organization, the leader of the organization can do anything in the name of God. Terrorist attackers even feel that they are just .
Thankyou for sharing this. I am a Muslim who lives in Indonesia. I'm just aware about the presence, culture and religion of Hui ethnic in China. About the architecture of a Mosque, I am sure that there is also great diversity across the muslim communities in the world, and it has also changed from time to time. In Indonesia, there are also old mosques (built around 16th century) with JAVA-nese (and not "Middle-East" ) Architecture to "conform" to the main culture at the time where HINDU culture was still dominant. I have seen a number of Mosques in Yunnan (and also in Indonesia) which were built by Chinese Muslim communities with Chinese architecture, and I think they are interesting. I like them.

My previous comment was incorrect, China has only triple amount of mosques then western countries, which is still a lot.
China also has more Muslims in death camps than western countries
But how many Muslims there? What is the reliable source on this? Why is the percentage/s of Muslims showing low than Christians in different sources despite the permanent residence of Muslims before Christians? Is the Chinese government inhumanely controlling their numbers?

Thank you for providing a nuanced perspective into the Hui Muslim identity. Your video reminded of a Hui couple and their restaurant I visited in Kunming. It was a one of my most memorable experiences during that visit.
Hi, I am from Indonesia, a country with most Muslim population in the world. In Indonesia, the early mosques also incorporate the original culture, the Hindu and traditional style. Due to this strategy, the population could easily accept Islam as a new faith because it didn't clashed frontally with their original culture. Only when Islam had become the major religion, the more Middle Eastern style was incorporated. And now, several new mosques even use modern and avant-garde style, leaving the ubiquitous dome shape.
Regarding the assimilation of religion, the history is a bit different in Indonesia, since Islam finally become the dominant religion. Even with the domination, Islam has evolve into a more "Indonesian" style, with its own unique culture and tradition. Only in the last decade there is a purification movement ignited by the new Islam awakening around the world.

Both Islamic and Christian Chinese are being persecuted especially if they do not bend to the Chinese government. That is why the message of patriotism. The woman doing the show even said that country was most important. But in both Islam and Christianity put God first and not the government.

I have been to Nanguan Mosque in Yinchuan, Ningxia in 2013 and 2014., when the original architectural structure was still intact.

As someone who have had a great fortune to visit some of the impressive mosques from Malaysia to Oman and as a practising Buddhist with freedom to practise my faith without fear in my home country Nepal, it is deeply concerning that these magnificent domes are being replaced with flattened tops.
Places of worships are underpinned by philosophies of the concerned religion. They inspire us to reflect and contemplate on scriptures.
For example, Arabic calligraphy is only used in the domes of mosques not on their walls or floors. The calligraphy symbolizes God's words and highest wisdom. In Buddhism, our temples often have flatten roof to symbolize one taste of samsara (world) and nirvana (liberation).
I am actually concerned that this kind of approach whilst well-meaning may actually be short sighted and unintentionally eroding Islamic values.

I think you assume a lot. Islam been in China over more than one thousand year, during this time, islam developed a lot throughout the world, evolving into what you see today, same evolution happened inside of China too but separately from Arab countries, these also created huge differences. Buddhism architecture are different in different countries too, I don’t see this is really ‘eroding ‘ anything

I watches a few days ago from vlogger Little Chinese Everywhere exploring Shadian muslim city. Apparently the city has the largest Mosque in south western china in arabic style and signature green dome built by Muslims in more recent history. With 40000 mosques around China, do you think policies vary from different counties or provinces to another?

There are differences in Western countries. France is more averse to public religious expression than other countries for instance. It sounds like in China the government has a role to play in deciding what is proper Chinese culture. In Australia we are suspicious if our government tries to do this - we tend to think they are setting some citizens as more worthy than others (which some of us don't like).
@user-kc7mu4jp4p Well it is not subtle. I'd rather be a goody-goody than a baddie (are you saying that is what you are?). I care because people I love and myself are effected by how people behave. To defend the good is not to defend evil or even violent means (big discussion). As I pointed out I do discriminate (hence the 'don't like). Your response isn't even coherent.

Your commentary is very important for Muslims from other geographic locations to understand that Islam melds into the people/culture it joins, not that an "Arabized" culture should represent Islam as a faith or culture alone. I became Muslim in China through Hui Muslims, his family had been Muslim for more than 1350 years, while a language student at Beijing University over 40 years ago. When I spent time as a language student and expat in the Middle East a decade later, I am so glad I was introduced to Islam outside of the Middle East...an understanding of Islam that was more kind, inclusive, and inculcating a softness toward others from Far Eastern philosophies--and not flagellation from an "Islam is superior-ity" complex that is not obvious to many Muslims bound to traditional thinking. Just take a look at the knee-jerk reactions of most Muslims in traditional Muslim states...form over substance. You are helping many people understand Muslim Chinese groups and the variation among them based on when the different schools of thought entered China.

this allowed me to see the other side of the argument more (I have always heard about Xinjiang region in the news and about the treatment of the Uygur, so I never thought there would be tolerance to the Muslim faith in other parts of china as well). There is nothing better than to visit China to see the truth with your own eyes! If you want to, you can go all the way to Xinjiang and see the lives of people there. There is no restriction now that China had dropped the zero-covid policy. There were never any restrictions to go to Xinjiang all these years. The only restrictions were during the zero-covid policy to stop the spread of covid. Not only Xinjiang, you can't travel freely to most other places in China for the fear of spreading the virus.
Millions of foreign visitors had been to China and at least a million had been to Xinjiang.

There is a need for one religion to be distinguished from another religion, otherwise, what is the point of having different names. Buddhism and Islam have theoretical and practical differences. So, why can’t these differences allowed to be manifested into each architectures? If walking into a traditional Chinese mosque, one cannot determine if it is a mosque or Buddhist temple, then I believe we have integrated to the point of not allowing each to practice their own religion freely.
Of course, Islam allows some degree into adaptation to local culture, but that doesn’t mean one has to give up its distinction. A true free society would allow distinction within its society, and let its people choose the path that they seems most logical or appealing. In long term, this is what makes a society resilient; allowing external influence as it can be a change for the positive.

Allowing multiple ways of life can enrich people's experience and allow choose of path that is most suitable for that person, instead of force adherence to a single path. It allows higher efficiency. ahh regarding the arabic style dome, my grandfather was Hui Muslim and my mum told me the arabic style mosque never existed in China, even in western part of China, until recent decades, for example the first Mosque in Xinjiang looks completely non-arabic, it is completely a central asian architecture, so China is merely remove the later outside influence, and resume to what it should be, btw, your english is excellent, and your reporting looks sincere

hi, first, kudos for this simple yet fine video explaining how China views and works with culture interaction issues. I'm from Singapore, a generation apart from you but totally appreciative of the information and explanation you put forth in this and many other wonderful videos. In my view, Singapore takes a not dissimilar stance (from China) towards many societal issues, including those towards religious harmony and societal security. Compared to the turmoil we had in the 60s and 70s, I would say that my government did a good job and similar results will likely continue to prevail in China going forward. Thanks again for your good work. BTW In Singapore, we still know Islam as 回教。

When Arab Muslims conquered previously Christian regions in the Middle East, churches were sometimes turned into Mosques. An example is the Umayyad Mosque in Damascus. Minarets were a Muslim innovation to facilitate the call to prayer.
In Indonesia, the biggest Islamic organization - called Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) - also holds a principle "hubbul wathan minal iman" that literally means "patriotism is a part of the faith".

I had been to the Huaisheng Mosque and 先賢古墓道in Guangzhou many years ago. I am Han Chinese born in Hong Kong.
I live in sweden that is one of the most secular society in the world, maybe close to China in that respect. As a curiosity I live in a very small village in south of sweden and a few years ago a Bhuddist temple with a big golden Bhudda statue was erected! I went there out of curiosity and was told that there would be a holy meeting the next day with food and a cermon and was invited. I visited and met the three monks and was treated very well and the food was delicious. In the western world muslims clash with the values of many countries, in Switzerland there was a vote that stopped use of minarets especially with loudspeakers. In sweden there has been individuals burning copies of the Quoran and that has made sweden a legitimate target of terrorism. Some people here says that religion is the cause of all evil in the world.

"Patriotism is part of the faith" is actually an alleged statement (known as a hadith) of the Islamic prophet Muhammad (God's blessings be upon him). Some dispute its actually being spoken of by the prophet but it seemed very popular on the walls of mosques all over China that I have seen. I wouldn't have recognized it in Chinese but saw it written in Arabic often, even in calligraphy. (حب الوطن من الإيمان) I also remember many Hui restaurants having photos of Xi Jinping meeting Hui people in west China framed on the wall.

Patriotism the word can be traced back to 1500 AD, whereas Prophet pbuh came in 570 AD. the word Patriotism didn't even exist prior to 1500 AD. Abstract terms are often like this in Chinese and the term also means patriotism. It is definitely very self serving to push this hadith everywhere but to give the Chinese government some credit, it is a hadith that exists (though of debated authenticity) and the translation doesn't need to be manipulated to give them a good and pithy message.

French here ! I find this video very interesting. In France I don't think we would destroy old mosques as we have deep respect for old architecture + we traditionally also have sacred places (the churches).

Another French here, you put into words what I was thinking after watching this video. We tend to prefer keeping religion in the private sphere and become very wary when it comes close to public institutions and stuff like that. Which is why the hijab becomes a very sensitive issue here and lead people to misunderstanding things about France. I feel it is quite similar to China in this situation.

Mongolia section expressing the beauty of Mongols and their history. Tibet expressing the beauty of Bhuddism. Xinjiang expressing the beauty of Islam with a modern spin of kashgar architecture. Your comments about "not fitting into society and needing education" are interesting at 14:20. This is the same 'logic' used in the UK and Australia to tackle radicalisation, which is basically what the Chinese government is doing. Somehow people have interpreted the Chinese method as being 'repressive', while the very same strategy when used by them is 'modern and free'. Thought provoking.

the greater whole for Muslims is Ummah, which is the community of believers world wide. Until we find a middle ground between Ummah and country, Islam will be forever an outlier. But at its core l, it's a uniting force, no matter your color, ethnicity, country of origin and even your previous deeds, Islam will embrace you like your mother's love.. That's why it's appealing, but it's true that it can cause people to detach from their "country" which is after all an artificial construction that doesn't truely exist...

so im a muslim egyptian ... far far from china yet i study at the Chinese egyptian university sooo China and chinse people of all ethinicities matters to me a lot - especially Muslim ones . Im extremely grateful to see a Han Chinese put out a video with an actual and complete thought process about the matter ! I feel that .. in the tense environment around this matter in china now (it might not be new at all but just more dissucssed lately ) the destruction of the green dome meant a lot to the Muslims . Im not even chinese but I was kinda sad that happened ! Regradless the intentions at that point ( even if they were to be good ) , seeing something so central for your identity getting demolished right in front of your eyes in a mood of general upset from all sides must be horrible . I get it . Islam is a religion - its not an architectural style . But in a way , this unique union of so-called "islamic style " (its just arabic style really ) and chinese culture , I find , to be absolutely mesmerising ... I would love to taste local halal chinese cuisine and get a feel for the internal culture of these people- how they talk and how they pray to Allah (God ) in a non-arabic tongue ! I feel that Muslim chinese culture is super unique and in a way only adds to the richness of china ... that doesn't mean that making the architecture of mosques more chinese renders the Islam of those chinese Muslims lost- but ... it would be a sad thing , no ? In my opinion if China want to incorporate Chinese architectural design into the local Muslim community it should be done by constructing new mosques with Chinese design instead of Middle eastern flavor. It’s wiser to leave the old historical buildings alone. It’s part of your history and identity too. In our country Malaysia we have 30% ethnic Chinese living and practicing their religion and culture. Can you imagine the feelings of the people affected or the backlash the government will face if they suddenly decide to tear down old temples or churches and make them comply with a more Malay design.
the middle Eastern looking ones are much newer than you think. most are less than 50 years old. the historic 800_1000 year old mosques in China looked very Chinese
Actually the dome was not originally Islamic. It was originally from the Christian churches during the Byzantine and Orthodox era. The muslims then took it as their own thereafter. Look at Haga Sophia church-turned-mosque in Turkey with the huge onion on it. Built in 537ad, that was there before the time of the Prophet Muhamad, born 570ad.
That explains why the oldest Chinese mosque in Guangzhou, which i already visited back in 2004, together with what was believed to be the resting place of the companion of the Prophet, Saad Bin Abi Waqqas, has taken the local chinese shape. Becoz at that time the early arab muslims who brought the religion to that southernmost province of China thru sea werent influenced by those onion shape churches of the Christians yet. Becoz Islam of the Prophet Muhammad's first generation of companions was still very new to any kind of specific shape or design. Only after a few generations when the Islamic conquests grew larger and wider esp during the 2nd century of the Hijrah calender or 7th century ad did they saw the onion shapes on Christian churches and decided to adopt it on their mosques.
(I am a Muslim from Malaysia and had studied in Egypt for 10 years... we still have a few old mosques in Malaysia of around 2 centuries old that took on local taste and design with no onion shaped roofs whatsoever. In fact it looked very much like a Chinese or Budhist temple design with sharp ends pointing up, with 3 layers of roofs and the only different with a Budhist temple was it was normally green in color. And this was the trend of most mosques in the whole of South East Asian region up until the onion shape came in during the second half of the 20th century. Pls google old mosque in Malaysia and Indonesia.)
Then the Islamic influence thru the Silk Road to China took place a few centuries later. The Arab and Persian Muslims then intermarried with local Chinese and the Hui people came to exist, who was originally a mixed of arabs persians and chinese but mostly Muslim in religion. Some of these arab persian muslims even served in the Mongol courts of Kublai Khan as ministers.
These muslims who came by land then introduced the onion shaped mosques in the central of China or along the Silk Road. This was already past 4 or 5 centuries after the first mosque in Guangzhou which had not yet brought any influence of the originally Christian onion shape. Becoz by then the onion was already prevalent in the Islamic world from Spain to India around 2nd century ad.
Btw, why i said that IT WAS BELIEVED to be the resting place of Saad bin Abi Waqqas was becoz there were 2 more claims of his resting place in the the middle east. And that that one in China actually belongs to his uncle.
To me personally as a Muslim, travelled far and beyond, i have no real affection for a specific shape of a mosque. The most important thing to me is that i love it when lots of people are inside praying or learning in it. Many old mosques in my country are already demolished to make way for modern style mosques with air-conditioned and all, something very much needed in a tropical country. Some maintain the good old roof shape and some just change it, by themselves, without any government intervention.

I felt China had the right intention of weeding out extremism, but they executed it incorrectly just as you said. Without the direction of the Imams in those communities which would have helped the government greatly, they sort of created issues that didn't need to happen. I know that In Xinjiang a lot of those who came back from Syria were extremists and have those separatist values, which plays nicely into the USA's narrative. Which could have been the reason why the govt acted so quickly on the matter without proper education and planning themselves. After all, no one wants to live in a disestablished country. I felt more comfortable being a Muslim in China than in the USA. Muslim Chinese have always been a part of Chinese history, Arabic writing was on the Chinese yuan, I know it's mainly cashless now in China so I don't know if you can find an yuan but check it out. One of the first people to embrace and accept Islam was China. In fact China has some laws that are similar to Islamic law.
I also want to mention that the line about Jihad is incorrect, maybe you misunderstood. Jihad does not mean a holy war, it means to fight for oneself. So for example, to battle oneself in the pursuit for truth, or knowledge, for justice, or to become more strong in faith, or to strong in charity etc etc. Holy war is what extremists turned the word Jihad into made popular by their US funded leaders. Also 72 virgins are NOT mentioned in the Quran, it's only in a Hadith- which are 'stories' that were written by others 100's of years later. We take these books with a grain of salt. I personally do not really follow any Hadithes as the Quran is clear, no other text is to be followed.
I really enjoyed this video! I have to say I do feel like the Chinese govt doesn't like chaos, they still have that ying yang balance and to avoid chaos they make some mistakes like this. I do hope that the friendships with different Middle East countries and more conversation will help the govt to rectify the issues they have created from their poorly executed plans to stamp out extremism.

I randomly came across your video today and I enjoyed it. It was very informative and refreshing to hear from a Chinese what exactly the situation is in China. I would like to point out that in Islam their is no template for a mosque in terms of design, for example the big round dome is not Islamic. It’s part of Turkish culture, once Turks embraced Islam they built their mosque with a dome and many other Islamic nations adopted it. Great video btw, look forward to future videos. Viewer from 🇬🇧

What one gathered from Chinese history, is that the Muslims helped the Chinese people during one of those ancient dynasties.
In return, they were rewarded by being allowed to live in China and own land.
I personally find the Chinese policy of the government reveals genuine care to integrate the Muslims within Chinese society, an effort that many minorities in other countries do not find within multi ethnic and multi religious communities within a state that is governed by a majority.

Most importantly the Chinese government built the mosque for the Chinese Muslims. For without there will be no mosque.
Great video! It seems that the people of Hui are afforded certain liberties to practice their religion, even though there may not be as much outward "identity." I'm glad that at least one mosque was allowed to keep its dome. While it's not necessary for a mosque to have "Arabic" features, it's important for it to be distinct enough to have its own identity so that passersby can learn more if they're interested. Overall, this is positive for existing Hui Muslims, but it may be a missed opportunity for those who could be introduced to a positive side of Islam if they knew there were mosques in their area.
It should be treated the same way as every other religion in the land. No more, no less.
@@jazondelta4976 I 100% agree. Only thing I mean is, you know see a church when you see it for example. As long as there's even a little bit of identifier that's all good. And that goes for all religions

any building can be a Masjid, but destroying antique architecture of a Mosque is pretty repressive and destructive of cultural abundance. i noticed there is hardly anyone inside praying etc and all are totally scared to say anything wrong. if they really want to stop terrorists, maybe don't destroy peoples mosques and get teachers in to the Mosques who actually know their religion enough to educate their communities about the evil of extremism and terrorism. if you don't allow the religion to be openly taught to the kids, why are you surprised if evil people come in and take advantage of their religious ignorance. even the verses of the Quran about jihad have a specific context in the Islamic history. 1 of the1st rules a Muslim has to follow is obeying the ruler as long as he doesn't order you to go against God and his messenger. so the more you stop kids from learning their religion the more ripe they will be for plucking by terrorists. by repressing the religion you are giving the terrorist preachers ammo.
